Westhoff doesn’t have the best set shot.
Westhoff doesn’t have the confidence, and I wouldn’t be surprised if most here don’t have confidence in him.

Freak goals, snaps, impossible angles and we are all good, set shot 15m out directly in front and he is the last in the team you want having the shot.

Shame, am a fan of his

His set shot @ 1:35 from the Freo game in 2016 is a good example.

I mean it went through, but still, wtf?

Had a bit of a smile when Ollie kicked it out on the full and they panned to Charlie Dixon with his arms outstretched
saying, I am here Ollie, Ollie turns, and goes off for a spell.
As they said, you would expect better from Ollie.

Alright, watched the rest of the game. Seriously guys, it was a combination of fatigue, ring rust, incompetent umpiring and playing some players who were more a liability than a help (Ladhams).

The miss against Gold Coast ruined him in front of the posts.

So fatigue was a factor on both sides so not a reason for the loss?

The loss is irrelevant. Last year we lost to St Kilda and Richmond by being blown off the park in the first quarter, then we came out in R1 and did what most thought impossible and not only beat Sydney but thoroughly out played them.

It was a scrappy game because of the conditions but both coaches would have been happy with how their sides played. Hinkley more so because we were all over them and as Dunstall said should have been miles in front.

You keep saying the loss is irrelevant. Yet another close loss. I ask what confidence do you have that we will reverse our record in close games this year and why?

The odd of coins tosses are 50%.

It took a 65m goal from Jetta to sink us this game, and that was after no less than three poor umpiring decisions that were influenced by a desire to continue the “West Coast has the wood over Port” narrative a little while longer.

Put Rockliff one out in the forward line instead of Thomas, he either gets a free or marks the ball instead of spills it and we win by 10 points instead of lose by 2.

Put Wingard in the forward line and he makes it happen.

How confident am I? About as confident that the sun will rise tomorrow. Unshakable belief.

You can apply that logic to nearly every close game we have lost in the last few years. If such and such did so and so..... Reality is we keep finding ways to lose. Until we prove we can find ways to win the close ones my doubts are unshakable.

...it was a friendly! a scratch match used to get fitness into 28 guys!

Except we have won nowhere near 50% of close games in the last few years

There can be sequences of "heads." In small samples, the results can be far from a 50% split. It is just luck, though.

Exactly the same can be said about West Coast put Kennedy at FF and a fit Natanui in the Ruck

Do you know what that difference between fear and excitement is? Perception.

If Kennedy was at FF it would be easier because West Coast becomes more predictable. And there’s no such thing as a fit Natanui - he’s cooked and will never get back to where he was.

It was a chance to practice winning a close game, holding on to a lead. Something we have been been woeful at under Hinkley. Do you not think this should be a focus? Where would have winning our fair share of close matches in recent years have put us? I would feel a lot more comfortable if our players could call on the experience of having won a game by under 2 goals in living memory.

You have your blind faith that you will say is backed up by your theories and I have my pessimism that I will say is realism. We will see if this year is different on this front and I sure hope it is because we won't go deep into finals if not.

The point is, you can’t blame the loss on players missing when the opposition also have players missing.

If Hinkley is remotely happy with "should have been miles in front" I will be very surprised.

That was our exact problem last year.
