Shayna Jack's doping ban halved on appeal...

If this can be mitigated down from 4 years to 2, hopefully the decision makers will show similar leniency in Willie’s case.

"She pleaded her innocence with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority but was given the maximum four-year ban, which would have effectively ended her swimming career. After an appeal to CAS in September, the court regarded Jack as truthful and reliable and reduced her ban to two years"
The fact it was accepted that she hadn't intentionally taken anything and still got 2 years doesn't bode well for Rioli imo. I was in the 'he'll get 2 years' camp until now.

im more inclined he will get two years with six months suspended.
I can't see a world where he doesn't get absolutely slapped. It's as open and shut as you can get.

I pray to the tiwi gods that he comes back as soon as humanly possible, but i'm also a realist and he poured gatorade into a piss cup.

I hope I'm seriously wrong though.

I’m yet to see any evidence that the WADA code permits a suspended or partially suspended sentence.

It doesn’t make sense when the penalty for a second breach is basically life. What’s the point of someone getting a life ban plus the extra six months hanging over them from their first offence?

Agreed.
I am a measured and balanced person, but even I thing this is dragging on too long.

From what I understand, he spat the gatorade into the cup?

Which makes sense, as you are not allowed to take liquids into the room when collecting the sample, and you cannot take the sample cup out of the room.

In fact, all sources of liquid are controlled. We put blue loo into toilets, tape up taps, and pat people down before they collect a sample.

There is absolutely no way in hell you would be allowed to have gatorade with you. People would put fake pee (purchasable online), into gatorade bottles.

You also cannot under any circumstances take the same container with you. If you cannot pee, and wander of for a break, the cup stays in the room with the supervisor.

What this means is, he cannot have poured gatorade into the sample cup, he would never have been allowed to have gatorade and the same cup at the same time.

What this means is, it had to have been spat in.

And this means, he took a mouth full of gatorade. Went into the collection room, then spat the gatorade into the cup.

And that is a plan to deceive. It wasn't spur of the moment, he snuck the gatorade into the room, in order to spit it into the cup.

It's monumentally stupid.

So what’s with the “We” in your post running through a description of what’s done in a test.

Is the “We” a reference to the fact that you either work for ASADA or a contractor that collects species for them at testing ?

Yes.

We do employment drug testing, which I am assuming is not a higher standard than ASADA.

Sample is collected in a toilet.

All liquid sources must be controlled. Taps disabled or covered by tamper proof tape.

Toilet water must be coloured.

Any bins must be removed prior to collection, as someone could have left something in them earlier.

Cupboards must be locked.

Loose clothing/jackets must be removed.

No bags allowed.

Pat down checking for anything in pockets.

Then, your given the cup.

There is no way in hell your given a sample cup while you have a bottle of liquid, let alone a yellow liquid.

What's the procedure when the person needs to hydrate to pass a sample?

Making a few assumptions there, Judge, jury and executioner from afar. At this stage all we have is rumour and conjecture, let's wait and see what eventuates.
Plus who in their right mind would think putting Gatorade in a sample cup would decieve anyone? Would think a sentence deduction would be in order due to being mentally handicapped.

They can leave for a drink, but they don't take the cup.

When they try again, it's the same as before. Pat down again etc.

You hydrate before trying to pass the sample. Not while passing the sample.

But maybe I am wrong, maybe the standards and procedures are totally different, and all the responsibility is on the athlete. With us, if we catch dodgy stuff, all that happens is we recollect the sample, and report to the employer that there was a recollect because of "irregularities".

It's totally up to the employer what they do with that info.

It seems unlikely though. If you don't want samples tampered with, make it very hard to do, and impossible to do accidentally.

Which is my take home point, it's unlikely gatorade could get in the cup from a moment of madness or frustration.

Not really. The whole process is designed to stop things like people pouring gatorade into the collection cup. Unless their process is seriously weird, it just cannot happen. Reading nothing more into it than that. The whole assumption here seems to be, in a fit of frustration Willie tipped some gatorade into the sample cup. But there is no way he is allowed gatorade while he has the sample cup, so we can safely say that assumption is false.

Which Gatorade flavour do you think someone could, with a straight face, try to submit as urine?

I thought the story was that he spat gatorade into the sample cup. Could he have potentially (although unlikely) brought gatorade into the room in his mouth?
