Thought I'd pose the question on this forum, does anyone here work with one of the corporate bookmakers and/or are able to share with me the types of jobs you can get with a bookmaker etc, whether it involves research, working on the phones etc, it's always been something I have been interested in knowing more about

Yeah it would just be interesting to know, I love doing sport research etc and have had a fair bit of experience working at the races on the bag with a bookie etc but it would be great to know what a corporate bookie can offer

Have worked for bookies (both on course and online) for almost 20 years part time although have given it the flkick the last 3 years.

A few things you need.

*A thick skin. Whenever the bookies has a bad result its invariably not his fault and he will generally look around for someone to blame. Most of them have massive ego's and can not be told they are wrong.

*Forget about your traditional workplace laws. Its very much a boys club and if you get told "you're a f**king idiot", then you just have to sit there and cop it most of the time.

*You need an 'in' somewhere. Most of the people employed have been in the racing game for a while and know people who know people. Bookies aren't generally going to employ a stranger with the amount of cash involved.

*You need a good head for figures. If you need a calculator to do medium level maths then just forget it. You need to work things out quickly and correctly.

*Working for a corportate can be incredibly boring. Contrary to popular opinion you are not accepting bets 24/7. Sometimes you might hardly get a bet all day depending on whats on.

*The wages are generally poor although I have worked for the odd kind hearted bookie who would give his staff a 'sling' if he had a good day.

The good things.

*Cup week. You will probably never work harder in your life but the perve is sensational and girls just love bookies and their staff - I don't know why that is....

*The camaradarie. As I said its a real boys club and if you love sport, racing and girls then you are with like minded folk all day. Plenty of laughts to be had.

Overall, its been a good experience for me and I wouldn't have swapped it at all. You learn a lot of lifes lessons along the way and for a young bloke I would imagine it would be a terrific introduction into the adult world. You'll make plenty of friends but I must re-iterate that if you are a sensitive soul and can't take criticism then its probably not the job for you.

Skipper Kelly may be able to add some more as well.

And what is your job title or what sort of work do you do as a matter of interest?

The first firm I worked for, I did Racing, then American and Australian Sports.

I now work for a smaller firm, where I do a bit of everything, did the Grand Finals over the weekend as well as Racing and helped with the Golf in running.

so basically you're a "sports trader"? I know it's prob a bit public to answer this but is the money reasonable in the industry? I've been working at the metropolitan racetracks for quite a while with a few different bookmakers, and love the environment and it mainly stems from family history within the industry, just on a fixed wage etc

I've always expressed an interest in playing a big part with a corporate bookmaker

Yeah, I'm a Sports Trader. I'm certainly not in this business for the wages. I've got about 6 or 7 mates that all worked in the industry until they turned Pro, they now make way more money than I do, and work for themselves. Have you worked for bookies on or off the fence in town? I assume in Melbourne?

Only off the fence, my grandfather was a bookie and used to work on the fence but I wasn't working back then, and ye I work the metro tracks in Melb, I guess in a way money isn't the biggest issue for me when it comes to something like this, it would be more for the love of it, but I guess at the end of the day you would like to get paid well for something you love as well

I compile the odds for the events I cover, manage the liabilities on those events and then continue to do so in running if it's a live event.

So how does turning 'pro' differ to what you are doing?

I'd imagine you would've seen a few sports arbitrage software / schemes along your travels?

Do you believe there is software that actually can recognise arbitrage opportunites in the world wide market?

I only worked at a smallish corporate and even it had software that tracked prices on every event across every corporation. So I can only imagine what the bigger guys have.

In fact, that's what you spend most of your time doing. Just tracking markets making sure you aren't left holding top odds on an event where you don't want to be top odds.

Boys get on to Tom Waterhouse...he is launching and wants to be up there with sportsbet....huge amount of jobs will be on offer. Did 1 casual shift but have sinced realised I want my weekens and have landed a new job anyway...They will be putting new staff on though....Very interesting stuff though;)

He makes 1 Mil in 10 mins most weekends.....heard of google kids?? Send an email or call................

Should see the form they do and who bets with them.....amazing stuff really

if you get employed by betfair you would be relocated to tasmania! any other aussie bookie(online) you would be relocated to northern territory.

i think.

how so? i spoke with sportingbet and they base all there workers in NT

Some corporates have all their staff based in NT but not all corporates do. Sportingbet and Centrebet are the main two based in NT.

A lot just have their license and Head Office based in NT but staff warehoused elsewhere. Sportsbet for example.

Betfair have a lot of staff in Sydney & Melbourne as well as Tassie.
