This is a positive coming out of Gary Ablett jr. leaving. Now they ccan sign a young and equally important player that is no doubt more loyal than Gazza. Who knows, at their peak, Joel (imo) will be better than Ablett jr. was.
Now I realise you are posing this as a "who knows" rather than a statement but I can't see it happen.
After Selwood's big leap forward in his first couple of years he is now just steadily progressing to elite.
This year has raised a few queries for me in regards to Joel Selwood.
Firstly, we know he is susceptible to tagging occasionally. However, with the prominent tag most weeks this may hurt his output.
Secondly, taking two games as examples when he played against absolute elites we see him comprehensively beaten. Chris Judd, in round five, completely dominated this match up (regardless of arguments of whether he was best on ground). Then in the qualifying Lenny Hayes smashed Selwood.
Now it is not unexpected that Chris Judd beat Selwood. Selwood, though not slow, still lacks the speed of some of the other elites. However, Hayes is a player in the similar mold to Selwood and he still made Selwood look second rate.
I guess my biggest worry then is that, as other posters have pointed out, Selwood lacks the explosive pace that would put him with players such as Judd, Ablett and Swan. Having said that Hayes is just as good as these three and does not have an acceleration or top speed like any of them.
