Im surprised that omly 3 guys are left to sign...and ud thinl that Harley woudl def stya as well as Chappy...Corey woudl stay but he would get offered so much at a club like Freo

It's good news for the Geelong footy club, but don't act like it's good for the game. If all of the stars start accepting lower salaries in order to get in the same club and win heaps of premierships, how are the rest supposed to stay in the hunt?

it would only serve to reinforce the importance of clever drafting, and not necessarily taking the "best available" as rated by conventional wisdom. Not saying Gibbs is a dud or anything because he's about 30-odd games into a career, but tell me that Carlton would go the same path knowing what they know now?

Well as you rightly point out...the conventional wisdom at the time was to take Gibbs...and I don't know that things would change in hindsight.

Stats are not the be all and end all, but they have some remarkably similar figures so far in 2008, with Selwood averaging 20.9 touches, Gibbs 19.5, and most other stats which I couldn't be bothered listing, relatively even. Given Gibbs plays less on the ball than Selwood I would say that is a fair result.

What we are seeing at Carlton is Gibbs beginning to emerge as a player now that he has a couple of others ahead of him attracting more scrutiny. He is only going to get better and better. I take nothing away from Selwood because he is quality, but he is under less scrutiny on the field for no other reason than the depth of Geelongs list.

I dont bring out the Gibbs is a year younger defense as Gibbs was playing senior footy in SA as a young kid which no doubt hastens development.

I am looking forward to Gibbs continuing to improve. Hodge took a while to live up to his no 1 status, Cooney is really only consistently delivering this year. Pretty sure Gibbs will join them in the next year or two.

Devil's advocate; Corey for Kerr? I suppose it wouldn't help ease salary cap pressure though, you're better off trying to get Corey to take a pay cut or at least a contract below 'market value'.

Although I love Corey, I would be happy with a trade for good draft picks! No use getting another player, Geelong need to think about the future a bit, and an established player does not help with the salary cap!
