I asked about danny on the Ask an Expert: Draftee Discussion thread a little while ago.

Danny.

Hardworking mid, good size, pretty decent pace, blond dreads. At his best outside - relishes the tough stuff inside, but not sure he actually gets many clearances etc when he's in there. Gut-running (both ways) is his go. Ferocious competitor. Kicking can be a little less than ideal at times.

If his attitude on the field is similar to his brothers I dont care where he is predicted to go, Second round draft pick (assuming we get pick 4 & 19 first)

Sounds like Logan but with Pace.

Draft his brother if he's good enough, but perhaps (given his background) put the old man on a retainer as a recruiting scout.

Maffra inducts its Hall of Fame
MORE than 200 of Maffra Football Club's faithful turned out to see premiership coach Wayne Butcher inducted as a legend in the club's new Hall of Fame last Saturday.
Butcher was recognised with the top award for his dedication to the club over more than three decades.

He played 210 senior games for the Eagles before beginning an exceptional coaching career in 1990.

Isnt hindsight a funny thing .. found the following regarding Butch prior to him being drafted:

John will go top 3.

One of the best kicks for goal I've seen coming through the Under 18's.

Attibutes:

*One on One marking elite
*Goal Kicking elite
*Agility for 197cm Ok
*Speed for 197cm Avg

He's probably a better mark and kick than Jack Watts was but Watts work around the ground is twice as good as Butchers. Butcher is actually very similar to Vickory but more not as quick and maybe a better kick for goal.

Forces from Victoria. Robbo's been watching too much Star Wars.

we need to convince his father of what butcher can become not only to this club, but this state and the AFL here, as opposed to in victoria where he will be just another good player.

here he can be the messiah - his father is the one we need to convince. I believe butch wants to stay but that his wont be the loudest voice at the dinner table

you guys seen how far maffra is from melbourne its 200+ ks from melbourne so about 2.5 hour drive I'm sure his parents wouldn't go to every game even if he was playing in melbourne its just a media beat up

yeah but to get to an adelaide game it would be that 2.5 hour drive, to get to the airport 90 minutes early, to fly another hour, to drive 25 minutes to watch the game and then come back

thats gonna be over 12 hours travel time as opposed to 5....

are they farmers? could we relocate them to adelaide? I can get them a great deal on a house somewhere

We are going to have to bite the bullet and pay way above the going rate for a 20yo - to the extent of $100-150k more per season.

He will put bums on seats - 2-3,000 IMO and the $ would be enough compensation.

He also would be a sponsors dream - simliar to Tippy, except that he most likely would be allowed to use more than 2 word sentences in any commercials that he does.

His family won't move, they are almost "legends" in the area. His father (like most) just wants his son closer, and probably like most Victorians doesn't really think highly of our State.

It's up to our Club to provide Butcher with the reason to want to be part of our Club, then it's up to John to tell his family what HE wants to do.

Almost sickening all this "go home" stuff floating about. It's like children can't be away from their families otherwise they will just die. FFS, most late teen kids move out of home asap, and many, many more move interstate or overseas for work etc.

I'm sure if Port is where he wants to be then that would be more than enough to keep him here long term. This family stuff is wank fluff a very small minority of players use when trying to not paint themselves as money chasing whores when leaving a Club for no other reason.

If he truly believes in the Club, and is enjoying his time with us (and from what I am being told it's a big yes on both accounts) then I'd be amazed if he didn't sign again very shortly.

Not every player in the AFL is overly concerned with how much they get paid. Infact, as long as it's around the mark to what they deserve, money isn't that much of a carrot to many players at all. It's well down the list.

thanks for clarifying on his parents and possibilities of them moving

as for the go home thing, I think its more of a "come home" thing. I know if it was me, and my boys were playing in GWS who were bottom of the ladder with minimal coaching and an unsecure financial future, I would LOVE to have them play for port, especially if port were interested and they were close to a flag

thats what butchers parents are facing right now.

if my son told me he wanted to stay at GWS, then fine I want him to be happy more than anything , but I wouldnt hesitate to let him know my preference so he could factor that into his thoughts.

Butcher has been working on his kicking. When he was in the AIS-AFL Academy two years ago, he had his technique filmed, and it was identified that improving his core strength would improve his action. Slowly this season he has grown stronger around the hips and thighs. And remember Nick Riewoldt was still missing shots when he had become an AFL star, and everyone had an opinion on what he should be doing.

''I had a little bit of a slump at the hip because I didn't have enough core strength, and I probably kick with a bent knee, so I've been trying to straighten that out a little it. Every chance I get I go out and have a few shots, so it's definitely something I've [been] working on,'' Butcher said.

I found this bit interesting given all the talk about Butcher spending so much time on his core in his first year at Port. Could it be that our strength and conditioning team deserve some credit here?

primus said something similar when asked "what about the people who say you have hindered butchers development by not playing him until now"

his response was along the lines of saying that actually, not playing him until now has helped him because they have spent this time developing his body to the point where it is ready to give him the best chance to succeed at AFL level from the moment he plays his first game

Nope - credit and praise is not allowed on this board - unless your initials are John Butcher.:D

What actually happens is that the club is criticised for playing young players too early if they don't star in game 1 and they get criticised for playing young players too late if they star in game 1.

I actually think that it was Choco that instigated that wan't it ?

Clever answer Matty, more of that please.

There hasn't been a player as singularly important to the destiny of our club, both on-field and off-field, than The Butcher is now. Not only will he do it all on field and straighten us up beyond recognition but he will get bums on seats like no other AND inspire a flood of new supporters running around in schools with the no32 on their backs.

He is worth whatever he wants.

Perhaps we should all send our kids down to give him their last 50c Chris Grant style.

Reading the comment about Blair Hartley, I came to think about the coaches and thought I have no sympathy for getting AFL assistance when I think about the pillage of resources our club has suffered. Alot of our knowledge has walked to other clubs and now it's our turn to receive!

As for Butcher, hum bug scrub, he'll sign :)

Butcher has not won the rising star nom for round 23. Disgraceful. Melbourne's Blease has 1 good game and wins it over a forward whose kicked 10 goals in 2 weeks.

Disgraceful.

I dont have any soft spot for Port nor for any other side but for the Integrity of the Compeption I honestly do hope that John Butcher stays at Port.:thumbsu:

Port Adelaide forward John Butcher may want to return to Victoria

THE manager of Port Adelaide youngster John Butcher says the in-demand forward deserves the chance to come home.

Paul Connors said this morning Butcher was weighing up whether to stay at Port Adelaide, with a host of Victorian believed to be keen on securing the Gippsland 20-year-old.

"John Butcher is a big boy and he'll tell me what he wants to do,'' Connors told SEN radio.

"Port fans, you'd love him to stay, but if the coaching landscape has changed then I think the playing landscape has changed and he's allowed to have a choice if he wants to come home.
