As far as chants go, obviously the best idea is to have random people call out "JOHNBUTCHER!" to the tune of:

Being at the training and sitting at the back of the first second of the seats the players in the player bench did look around and have a giggle, I assumed it was me and my ridiculous long hair and patchy facial hair. Bunch of dicks :p.

"Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

Today's Age reports that:

"And the domino effect initiated at Port Adelaide last week with the re-signing of key defender Jackson Trengove looks to continue with the Power set to secure John Butcher for the next two seasons.
Butcher's manager, Paul Connors, met Port Adelaide officials yesterday and while the player himself appeared keen to reconcile his decision with his family, both parties were confident of a deal soon.
''I've got every indication he's staying,'' said Port Adelaide football boss Peter Rohde last night, ''but of course it's never decided until it's signed.''
Rohde agreed that Trengove's commitment to the club at the age of 20 probably helped influence the decision by Alipate Carlile to sign a new contract after months of speculation he would defect to GWS."

This excited me so much I had to post a thread even if it was 4.30am and I had a screaming baby demanding my attention. It looks like the end is nigh. Not yet time to rejoice but not far off...

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

It's still there. Buried 3/4 of the way into the article after half a dozen para's about Shane Tuck and others

Must be on the full site cos it's not appearing on the mobile version of the page when I open it on my phone. Based on the heading of the article I'm not doubting u tho. Though consider the source haha Caro? Shit probably means he's gone!!

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

For all the crap the club has been through the past couple of years, the fact we have been able to hold on to our talent is a pretty good effort. Really we have only lost Krakour.

Agreed :thumbsu:

I wouldn't even call Krakour talented. Our young guns like Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Trengove, Butcher, Moore, Pittard, Lobbe (will sign) have all stuck by the club.

Wasn't the media telling everyone that there was an exodus at Port?

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

Happy about the news, but NOT happy about the length of contracts our players are signing of late.
If what is being reported about the contracts is true, they will all come out of contract at the same time (again) and we will have to go though all this crap all over (again).

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

agreed - next year will be spent worrying about pittard, gray and boak (already hearing rumours that GWS will target one with big $$ knowing if they get one, the other will come over in PSD as they are considered best mates and a package deal)

so a year of that crap, and then the next year it will all be about butcher, trengove, carlile etc again, plus god knows who else at that time

and them a year or so after that, all these guys will have been at the club 7-8 years, be prime 24-26 year olds and will be free agents ready to go wherever they want with no compensation. We had better hope we are building some great bonds and are on our way up by that point

So what's your solution ? Put them on 5 year deals ?

2/3 is the AFL standard length contract, any longer and you are open yourself up to risk. Ideally for the younger high end draft picks I'd try to get 3yrs extensions asa rule, but managers have to agree as well.

If you get the clubs culture right and the boys want to play together, the length of contracts almost becomes irrelevant.

I said a similar point, but lets look at it objectively. These guys by then would have give minimum 5 years at the club, Boak 7 years.

If our club hasn't got it's act together we probably deserve to lose some of them.

But in that time, I'm sure we will be climbing as it's obvious they have made a pact to stick by each other, more time to bond with each other also making friendships even more secure and in 2 years the hype of A.O will be out of control, so all things considered the boys will be pumped.

I guess 2 years is about right because they are young and why would they want to commit to a longer term and fix their price when they could get more dollars in two years, assuming the continue to improve.

So to summarise, we only have ourselves to blame if we can't keep them from here on in!

They are all uncontracted next year and GWS will be hovering

Put some on 2, some on 3 and take a punt on some with longer contracts at the right time in their careers. Mix it up a bit. That is why people employed to do this sort of work get paid for it.

If we are just going to go standard all of the times we may as well just spend a couple of hundred bucks on a computer program.

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

lol We did awesome from the Peter's Brothers trade though.

Even did alright with the Krakwhore one.

Agreed. Who can honestly remember a game other than West Coast in 2006 when Shaun the midfielder actually took a game by the balls and ripped it apart? A frustrating waste of talent that boy. Could have won Brownlows but wasn't prepared to work for it. Happy with what we got as compensation.

As for Krakeour, some of us here simply never rated him right from the start.

Re: "Power set to secure Butcher for next 2 seasons"

Every year no matter what youre gonna have 40-50% of your list coming out of contract. Unless you sign them on 10 year deals then theres no way to get around that. The quest is to get them to sign a contract extension early on in the piece.
