Although it will force Weshoff to play as a ruckman, which is fun for the whole family.

Great idea isn't it, if someone is forced out of the forward line, just put them in arguably the most important position on the ground, in which they are totally out of their depth... instead of dropping them...

Westhoff could always play on the wing full time like Chad in 07.

Ideally it would put Westhoff as third tall, arguably his best position. If nothing else, Butcher's debut (and Jonas's) is certainly memorable.

Westhoff & Gray's debuts against Hawthorn in 07 were also memorable.

Have a think about how far we've come since then.

I think O'Shea is the next "big wingman", not Westhoff.

Butcher at least is a real, permanent KPF, in anyone's language, and not looking like his career is dependent on AFL rule tweakings.

For all his good and bad games, it's always seemed to me that if it weren't for the "hands in the back" and "chopping the arms" rules, the Westhoffs would not have been on any AFL lists.

Correct.

great game from Butch.... really loved his workrate and his strong hands

one thing that pissed me off is he was infringed regularly and only received 1 free kick (which Rodan advantage goaled)

Yet Buddy got free kicks regularly when similarly infringed. Not saying he didnt deserve them, but Butch did also and got stuff all

Yeah, but the umps were rubbished by Hawthorn during the week for not giving them enough free kicks.

Obviously the stats supported that complaint, so what better way to fix those stats for the year than to pay one-eyed free kicks all game long to Hawthorn against a shitty interstate side that no-one gives a shit what their free kick count is?

Nice little debut given the thrashing.

Loves front spot, is a natural overhead and chases hard. Hes going to frustrate us over the years but I like his strengths.

Having only been able to watch his stat count remain unchanged for long periods of games on the sanfl website this year, I was excited but sceptical about what Butcher could provide or achieve today.

To say that he was a positive would be an understatement.

The only thing that was very concerning in his game is that ball drop when lining up for goal, and in fact when kicking around the ground. It really is the worst set shot action I have seen from a key forward, and only marginally above the action that Chaplin uses when kicking at the goal posts.

Still, his competitiveness, marking ability under extreme duress, ground level efforts, and tackling and chasing were first class. I loved the block he put on for Rodan to goal in the third also.

Should have been awarded 2-3 more free kicks for the game.

We need to find another target up there to support him though. Schulz for all of his admiration here (and I do admire him) has a lot of limitations which are highlighted even more by the way we are travelling at present. He is still a 2 goal per game forward at best. Westhoff and Stewart are lost causes. If people are waiting for Westhoff to be used as the third tall forward, they are accepting that he is not better than playing a resting ruckman in the forward line and are basically putting him in the bracket of Toby Thurstans - I'd like us to do better than that.

If there is truth in the observation that Redden can be an effective forward, I'd rather he play up there next year and give Lobbe support in ruck, much the way Lade did when he started in 1997.

Let's try to get Day - if it means losing Trengove and on-trading something for him, then so be it.

I find your ideas intriguing and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter

Is he chance for the rising star nom this week? Haven't followed the performances of other youngsters.

Future Gun! Loved his work yesterday. Contested marking was excellent. Strange kicking action, but if it's consistent he can work with it.

:thumbsu:

just looked
29 free kicks to 18 Hawthorns way

Butch should have got at least 2 or 3 free kicks. He had his arms chopped, was thrown out of one contest and copped another one high...

I also believe that we only had 7 free kicks up until half time.

The umpire who should be investigated is #17

John Butcher was a burst of fresh air

This kid was a massive win for us- his body was not 100% and could not come in much sooner than he did.

That he got through the game was a credit to him. Cramps, soreness, hammy, all of the above

Needs to learn body positioning- will
Needs to work on kicking action- will

Giving us what he did means we can settle on a forwards plan- makes the decisions on Stewart and Westhoff easier

Also Lobbe- has anyone noticed how much higher he is leaping week by week- tremendous improvement

This won't be a bad pre-season- we just need to delist, trade and recruit effectively.

If we get just a little bit of some momentum to carry us over summer with enthusiasm.

John Butcher will be a superstar of the game and we have handled him properly. He and Schultz clearly are not certain who goes where when, but considering how rarely and how the ball is delivered in what is to be expected.

Take a bow JB, really exciting stuff
