I'm very intrigued to see how Cox approaches it. Will it be a 'steady as she goes' approach, or will he have new ideas to unlock the true potential of the playing list - hopefully the latter.

As long as the first move is to fire our club psychologist and find someone else, then he has my support ha!

Weirdly a new voice could be the ultimate psychologist it may be exactly what this very good list needs. Might also be what needs to regenerate the optimism inside which could keep chad etc

I'm happy with Cox. Knows the playing group well which will make for a smooth transition but will bring a different perspective.

Plus how good will the memes be with Big Deano lol

wow, big news…

2024 is the year I got back into following the footy, and going back to following our beloved Swannies too. Within that little time, I gained respect for Horse and his legacy at that as well. I have always thought he was good at his craft. Yeah, I had moments where I questioned him (the Port game, and the granny), but I still respected the man at what he did.

While sad to see Horse going, they’ve chosen well with Cox, and hopefully he can lead our club into a successful future.

Absolutely that could be the case. But clearly we are getting a lot of things wrong in the lead up to the biggest game - which suggests to me it goes beyond just the coaching element. Perfect example was some of the strange things we heard coming out after the grand final.

But anyway, only time will tell - lets hope it goes as smoothly as the transition to Horse was.

Feels weird, albeit very good timing in terms of our immediate future - i think the group would've felt a stale daunting vibe starting another pre-season on the back of that GF loss. And i rekn Horse felt that too.

I am scared though, very scared. There is absolutely no doubt Horse has been the number 1 reason for our unwavering stability as a club for the last 15 years. This is either going to be a continuation of it, or the end of it. The club will either continue it's legacy or we will finally remember what it's like to be unremarkable.

Great timing for Horse too, highlights his professionalism and makes him even more desired. Will be the number 1 target for any club looking at a new coach. In fact I think he is so well respected that even coaches with the cushiest of jobs could all of a sudden be in the firing line.

Well not much happening around here.

Awesome coach. Great standards. Did all he could, just that final hurdle that the players have to shoulder much of the blame for as well.

I will remember him as one of the greats of the Club - he kept us relevant in the toughest sporting market in the world.

His absence at the draft can now be explained. I am glad he did it like this to a certain extent. Cox also not entertaining the WC job probably now has more meaning as well.

Cox now has clean air and has a great group around him, especially Leon Cameron whom I rate.

Onwards and upwards.

The best thing is I can see no material changes off field and in the rooms away from the game as such. You can see Cox is mature, cut from the same cloth and good to go and the standards that make the Club great will be there.

Fascinated what this does to the team.

We saw what can happen when Roos left and Horse inherited a team full of talent and sent them on a new path.

Maybe this is the key.

Dang it.....now I have hope again :)

All the best Horse.

Thanks mate.

Maybe he decided during off season, and wanted to wait till the players were back to tell them himself.

Thanks for everything John!

Very likely. I get the criticism of his tactics and match day coaching but I won't accept any criticism of his man management. For a bloke who has to make tough decisions and keep 44 players onside, the evidence shows that he truly cares for all of them and they care for him. He would've wanted to tell as many of them to their face.

You finished clear on top of the ladder. Your problem wasn’t the game plan. Your problem is that you timed your run poorly. Hardwick learnt that in 2018. He said never again will we sprint at the start of a marathon. He then went on to go back to back.
The next part of this is that Cox has also been part of your failures. You are not giving the club the best chance of having the best coach available in the land without an extensive process in finding this person.

Doesn't matter, no one remembers who finishes on top, if you win 1 in 5 grand finals, you are going to have questions asked. Plus plenty on here were questioning our gameplan by the way to say it wasn't gameplan is ridiculous. Stop the turnover route and we were easily stopped, just that there were 12 poor sides gifting us turnovers. How do you know we haven't done due dilligence with Dean Cox? Highly sought after for every single job around!

I do agree with taht but the buck stops with the coach and did he learn his lessons from 2 years prior? They were the same issues when it mattered. Is that players or coaching? Look probably a mix of both to be honest

I really hope not :(

For all the complaints about getting it wrong on the biggest day - he is an outstanding person in so many ways. Not just as a footy coach, but as a man. His leadership off field on a wide range of issues, without want for praise or recognition, looms large - and there are very few young men over 2 decades that haven't improved as people as a result of working with Horse.

Its a sad day for the footy club - from an on-field perspective, it is probably overdue. Change is needed at any club, no matter how legendary a coach may be. But it will be a huge loss to the AFL - I hope it is just seen as a time for change, and not health related in any means, as Horse as a 'man' is an absolute gentleman to a tee.
From all reports from supporters, it’s not. Thank you for not attacking me like some of your fellow supporters. This thread popped up on my feed and decided to make a comment that a few may have been thinking. It wasn’t wishing anyone harm. Quite the opposite. I was hoping that his health is good but of course you do wonder why day 2 of preseason is the day chosen to make the announcement. Good luck next year.

Did we need another thread ?

In this one I will say seriously

a great man and a good coach , we don't have many premiership coaches and he delivered that and other great memories.

Players love him it seems and he is a great ambassador for the club.

It's the right time, Hope he is ok

all the best Horse
