Coach John Longmire - Part IV has resigned

Absolute legend of the club. It's a shame that he couldn't nab a second a second flag, but the way he rebuilt on the fly in 2016 and then completed one of the quickest major rebuilds half a decade later is a testament to his quality as a coach.

Was probably the right time for change but for Horse to step down after a GF appearance shows the leadership of the man.

One of my favourite memories of him is the GWS game in 2021(?) where we had to make a bunch of very late changes due to COVID and the footage of him getting the boys fired up in the sheds when it would have been very easy for us to come out flat.

Yes it was emotional & emotive. A section of the Swans faithful wanted to stay in Melbourne by hook or by crook. Took over the board, sacked the coach etc. But the reality was, they found out once they got to the boardroom, the club was bankrupt. Without the move & the help from the VFL the club would not have been able to carry on. The other reality in all this is when theVFL decided to become the AFL they were also broke & that move saved them too. Without that coming off & the WAFL capitulating to the VFL there would have been no VFL comp the next year.

If the WAFL had held out the National Comp would have been run by the Australian National Football League. But even they didn't have the money to go national. The VFL got financial support but only if the National Comp was instituted.

Soth Melbourne, on the other hand was broke well before they went to Sydney. Same with Fitzroy. Fitzroy were worse, they owed more $$$$ than Skase. I was working at the Junction Oval with the caterer. They failed to pay the caterer for the Footlighters, all the Club functions, it amounted to something like $250,000, which was a ****ing lot of money in those days. Luckily, the caterer had the Herald Sun etc 7 many other clients. But in the end the debt building up so much & them declaring bankruptcy one day & registering the club in a different form the next the caterer gave up. Swans were never in the same sort of spot Fitzroy were. But they were running insolvent & needed help. The Sydney deal was about the only thing that would save the club in any form. Sad, but unfortunately true. In those days it was difficult for all the clubs to survive, especially Souths who's are was now given over to soccer due to the huge influx of European migrants. Footscray & Fitzroy had similar problems
What do you mean Souths , we have never been called that

One down, 5 (or so) to go.

Need a clean out at the top.

Chairman, President, CEO, anyone that's been on the board for more than 10 years.

Thanks for your service, let's get some new blood in. And that doesn't mean simply promoting someone with the same mentality/mindset from within.
If we did that given how the club has performed over the last few years it would be the embarrassment of the 3 GF beltings on steroids.

Unqualified respect to Horse. A genuine statesman of the game.

Obviously the grand finals are a talking point but under his watch you guys never once looked anything less than a benchmark club and culture that all others at least partially tried to model themselves on.

Now this is how oppo fans should post on here

Not really, you can have both a smooth transition and maintain stability, you wouldn’t have it all occur all at once, we have completed this successfully already, Roos ➡️ Longmire, Colless ➡️ Pridham, Ireland ➡️ Harley (I think)
We are now seeing Longmire ➡️ Cox & the Beatson ▶️ Keane

At some stage it will be Pridham, we have managed these changes well, so it is not a ridiculous comment,

that is probably the most ridiculous comment I have read on this board in years. Stability is absolutely necessary for success. If you believe 8 GF appearances in the past 28 years, in an era of equalisation, is not a success story, you have no concept of how a footy club needs to be run. This success is completely due to the stability of this club from the president down to the fact of only 3 coaches in that time.

Why

McRae and others have done it
Totally agree.

Richmond did it.

Carlton did it.

Collingwood filth are the perfect example.

Lots have done it.

We totally changed our structure in literally 2 training seasons back in the day - different sport but same principles. When in red zone do this. Early tackle count - do this when 40 plus out. Late in count 40 plus out - do this etc etc etc.

Didn't take long at all.

If Cox doesn't fire the 'everyone gets a participation award' sports psych and replace her with Barry Hall, this whole hand-over will be a waste of time.

I want BBBBH revving up the team prior to finals and at half time, not someone's mum telling them "it's not whether you win or lose...."

Exactly right he’s got 5 months at em now till she starts then tweak as the season goes ..
As it’s been said plenty of teams have changed big time with a new coach and cox will have a plan in place for sure ..
I see it as exciting give me optimism for next year for sure which I was really needing ..

It's just sad the way he went out. I'm sure there's quite a few players in that room feeling guilty about how his career ended.

Mid season he would have dared to dream, perhaps this could be the year I can get flag #2, and then perhaps look at evening the GF ledger at 3-3. Only for it to fall in a heap and have to bow out 1-4 with no fuel left in the tank.

He was very complementary to the group for what they achieved this year. A little too complementary, but he seems like the guy that focuses on the positives and tries to draw that out.

Great man, just a shame the results didn't follow everything he put into this team.

Bit emotional watching this to be honest. Think the future will be a lot kinder to Horse's legacy than some are now in the shadow of a GF disappointment.

The class he's carried himself with, the way he's regenerated the list and our style over the years while remaining competitive is incredible.
And he is a big legend of the club. To be able to manage upwards of 44 players day in day out, 24x7, 52 weeks a year. It is a life choice. He knows how to establish great relationships with players. He is a people person. That takes a lot of empathy. A lot of trust in players. To know how to talk to players at all levels within the club. Those just arriving, the ones trying to crack into the team, those in the team and what it takes to stay in the team, and ultimately those on the way out, how to manage that transition. It is a herculean task of people management. I would not want it even for a cool million dollars.

I'd rather have a life. It is a life choice.

He has carried himself like someone that knows life. He accepts failure. He accepts wins. He knows that whatever happens that there is another day. Coping with the highs and lows. Coping with external pressures. Just coping with the day to day and motivating players to perform must be very draining. Especially after losses and disappointments.

14 seasons. 5 grand finals. i grand final win. 12 top eight positions. His playing career has its own legendary highlights. He is a winner at life. Many do not achieve over a period of time. And he has. And that is the test of a champion person. To consistently deliver quality over a long period of time. Life is not easy. There are not many free passes. And he turns up and consistently has a crack and beats par.

He will be judged by his failure to win GFs. And that is very fair. He has presided over the most one sided grand final losses as a collection probably ever. His Achilles heel.

Nobody is perfect. He had a great run. He made me proud to be a Swans supporter. Week to week I trusted the club and loved the club. I knew we were better than most. Most weeks. Most years. Most decades. With Horse at the helm. Hand over the mouth in the box. He rarely complained. Even when he had reason to. He was a subtle Horse. He was a man management Horse. He was a dignified Horse. He had a funny laugh way about him Horse.

I expect a few players will have tears at hearing the announcement. People people have that lasting affect on those that they share experiences with. Good to see him go out respectfully.

Au revoir! Horse.

Changing the senior coach and replacing him with someone internal isn't going to change anything. The admin has done well with the new centre, great. But let's get an admin that can now focus on winning Grand Finals.

We've had year after year of internal appointments all under the direction of the current hierarchy. There's no competition for positions, no fresh ideas, just more of the same.
So you've got basically nothing then in terms of off field elements that demonstrate a clear need for the absolute clean out you suggest is necessary, beyond something that is primarily the purview of the coaches room.

Sure - one can argue that there should be more focus on winning grand finals. But you don't get anywhere near grand finals if your club is a basket case off the field - and that we are certainly not.

Happy to be convinced otherwise if there can be demonstrated significant failings off the field. By most of the key metrics, we are in very good health off the park.

Of course there should be turnover over time - don't disagree. But that is different to throwing everything out with the bath water like you are suggesting we should.
