Did not see this one coming at all. Thought he had few years left in him…not if there’s no drive?

Is he retiring injured to get the payout?

Try to show a little compassion maybe? If anything he's doing us a favour by retiring now now as it will open up another list spot for the MSD.

You're right in saying the drive isn't here anymore, but I don't think it's necessarily a new thing or even a surprise as he was wavering a bit on more than one occasion over the past couple of years. It's a credit to him that he stuck it out for this long I reckon because he was one of the players who was really struggling with bubble life especially with the family stuff he had going on.

Just heard that Roughead has retired. I was taken by surprise but can't help but wonder if his timing benefits Collingwood in the Mid-Season Draft?
Let the speculation begin...

P.S. Thanks for the contribution, Roughy. You held your own down back for the Pies many times. Chapeau.
The AFL website says that the Pies didn't push him, but that he made the decision himself.
Being the good citizen that he is, he has timed his retirement so that the club can take a pick in the mid-season draft.
He's been a great pickup.
Thanks, Roughy, all the best.

Though club probably asked

Very sad to hear that Roughy’s time with us, in a playing capacity at least, has come to an end. He gave great service and made those around him play better and walk taller.

One of the finest peanut butter sandwiches one could ask for.

Good luck, Roughy

I think Busslinger just climbed in our drafting boards
I would personally hope it had a bigger impact on our MSD plans because there seems to be a number of 195cm+ types currently showing a bit at state league level. Pointy end of the ND I feel is more trait based and unlikely to be impacted by an early retirement, IMO. For instance territory game is massive for us so clearance beasts and intercept defenders are probably of greatest value.

Was a great contributor to the cause since coming in, really played well, and impressed us all. Thanks, Roughy, and all the very best for the future.

Agree 100% with this and also hope he's still got some roll with the AFLW side

Surprised to hear he’s retiring mid year. Has he had another set back with his finger?

Thought our defensive structure was better and tighter in the game he played this year. With Dean an unknown at senior level and no other lockdown tall he’ll be missed.

Need to Draft One in Mid-Season Draft

See your point
My POV
  • Nov Draft I want the best KPD / KPF we can get at the pointy end
  • MSD strongest / best inside mid we can get to protect our developing mids

I'm not at all worried about the ladder this year - being on the verge of the 8 is almost our worst result
Hoping we put in amazing performances but end up with great picks to shape our re-build

Sad to see Roughy depart. Although 2023 was looking less likely always assumed he’d see out the season.

I assume given the timing it signals an intention to take at least 1 pick at the MSD, and with Kreuger being added to the LTI list, more likely 2.

This is really surprising news.I thought he would go on a bit longer, but it seems that his shoulder was worse than anyone thought.

I’m sad to see him go.He’s been a great club servant and seems to be so well respected at both clubs he played at.And don’t forget he’s virtually held our backline together for the last four years,so he’s been a great pick up for us.

Enjoy your retirement,Roughy. You’ve certainly deserved it.
