Some would argue taking Billy Longer off your hands was actually a favour.

The moral of the story is never draft a ruck in the first round. The lesser known rule is that if you do, offload to st Kilda

In a way that pick helped us secure Ashcroft. Longer became pick 25, which became McStay which became one of the late second round picks used as points for Ashcroft.

similar to how the Fitzroy merger was used to acquire Simon Black

Surely pick 8 for Battle is the nadir that causes the AFL to scrap FA compo.

Your compensation should be the salary cap you open up to attract other players
If salary cap space was all it took to get top line players to join your club, North and St Kilda would have traded in multiple superstars by now. But we know it doesnt work like that so compensation is needed as a mechanism so ensure the big clubs arent the only ones benefiting.

Fair enough some people don't like the compensation system, but of all players to spit the dummy over, Josh Battle? He's a ripper. Would have commanded a pick around 10 in a trade, what's so shocking about the Saints getting pick 8? Incredibly durable, can play at both ends, great hands and skills etc.
