Nowhere near the draft as 17-18 year old. Kid is from Mildura and nowhere near even a rep squad as a kid. He is the same age as my son so I know all those rep kids. Had a good eye as a cricketer and could really belt the ball, but was a chubby happy go lucky kid last time I saw him as a 15 year old. No way would you ever think he would make AFL.What Draft would he been in as an 18 Year Old?

There's 2 things that I'm immediately impressed with the 1st highlight clip. The first being SAFL having a common sense approach of awarding 25metres instead of 50metres. I've banged on before that the AFLW / VFLW should only have 25metres pentalies due to the average kick of the player but to see it in a men's senior game, it just makes so much more sense. IMO 50 metres is just too harsh these days.
The 2nd thing obviously was Carmichael taking on the game and producing a lovely roost. From the start of his kick to where it ends up it's a 70 metre drop punt.
Welcome to Collingwood Josh!!!
If only we had Sier. Time to reinvigorate his thread. Lest we forget. Not our Number 1 Need but we have Struggled at AFL Level with Clearances
No 45?
I don’t see that to be relevant mateCan't see him holding up his end of a discussion with our resident philosopher, Grundy. Speaks like he spends most of his life pushing sheep or cows around and hanging out with simple country folk.
Thanks for this intel. It does explain why he was so under the radar at a time when other kids his age were picked up. We all have our own paths in life and his trajectory to our club may not be the straight line most adhere to.Nowhere near the draft as 17-18 year old. Played 11 senior games as a 17 year old in the Sunraysia league but it all changed when he went to Darwin. Won a B&F, came back home and started to turn heads before heading off to SA.
Great story, especially for all those kids who started off behind the 8 ball. Doubted he ever really thought of being an AFL player, all of a sudden.
Merbein are the Magpies so it's an even better story, they were the easy beats back then, doing much better these days.
Will look through the history books and get back to you…Anyone ever won the Brownlow after being drafted in the mid season draft? Not getting ahead of myself but reckon he’s got a chance
Maybe if he’s good enough, and comes into midfield, will give more time for McInnes n Macrae to develop fully and build their bodies, fingers crossed he is a goodyGood outcome!
We need the midfield depth and another big body will thicken the soup nicely with Brown x2 seeming to be the go to options currently.
From a list management perspective it also made the most sense if we’re not only into McStay, but also angling for a tall early draft. Another tall option with a rookie pick (it would leave us 7 current or former talls off the rookie list) would have potentially added further to the quality imbalance on the list.
Wasn’t just the distance. Was his kicking style as well. And yes, hitting targets can be another thing… but he also did this nicely in the state game highlights. V small sample size thoughKicking distance doesn’t correlate to being a good kick in my book, sure it helps…but can he pass and hit target on a regular basis. Swan was a great shot at goal, couldn’t hit the side of the barn in any other facet.
If he's not picked this week, we riot.
I was merely observing that he is obviously a country boy - from up your way, Mildura!I don’t see that to be relevant mate
Or the opposite... Travis Cloke. Could hit a bloke lace out from 60m on the run in general play but struggled in front of the sticks.Kicking distance doesn’t correlate to being a good kick in my book, sure it helps…but can he pass and hit target on a regular basis. See him winning multiple medals during his career but just top-ten this year.Anyone ever won the Brownlow after being drafted in the mid season draft? Not getting ahead of myself but reckon he’s got a chance
Let’s hope, lots of positivity around the kid. He'll make it, has a lot of key attributes and will only improve in a professional system, I think we have a gem
I thought the Son of God was hypothetically speculated as going to Hawthorn (back in the 70s). The wall poster said "what would you do if Jesus Christ came to Hawthorn?" and some wag scrawled underneath it "move Peter Hudson to CHF".Another JC at the club
Praise be..........
