It's a great situation though - having worthy players being edged out by better players is how the system should work.

Too scared to jinx this good fortune by speaking of it jon. :)

Point of order your honour: Whilst I'm delighted with the form that young Josh has shown (right from the pre-season games til now) HE is no- where near the level his dad was even as a youngster.

Living where I do and with the links to GFC that I have, the comparisons that have been presented by Geelong and moreso latterly by AFL aficionado's that GAJ is better than his dad... I'm really hoping that the youngsters that see our two "new" Daicos's and compare them to their famous father do so in the knowledge that Peter was a once in a lifetime player (much like the elder Ablett). Peter's ability to do pretty much anything he wanted from the moment he stepped onto the field in his first game separated him from mere mortals. His ability to read play, to make play for others and (when he had to) winning games off his own boot...well those things will seldom be repeated.

Josh has elements of his father's brilliance. His balance and problem solving is highly evolved. He has great hands, kicks the ball well (maybe 85% of his father's level) and he has a hunger to get involved and to assist his team mates. But lets not compare the two...by year 4 Josh has played 35 odd games and kicked 17 goals, Peter had played 80 odd games (including 3 finals series and 3 GF's) and kicked 170 odd goals mainly playing as a midfielder and sometime forward.

Ablett snr is SO FAR AHEAD of any of his sons that its embarrassing when they're compared to him.
Any comparison between Peter and Josh (or Nick in future) is even more far fetched.

I'm just so glad we have both the boys playing for us, they will both give us all, plenty of Daicos moments!

I have to agree. Peter as a midfielder was better from the get go.. kicked many goals as well. Josh will end up a star, i feel Nick could be more like his father.

Of course, modern players are simply not even half as talented as players from the amatuer VFL era.
You obviously have not watched Peter play. He or Gary ablett could come into todays AFL, and teach every player how to play the game.. Kappa you're annoying and have NFI. A few weeks ago you and others were calling for Buckleys head..

That's exactly what I said, players from the amateur VFL competition in the 80s are 2-3 times better than the best modern players, comfortably.

Which thread was I calling for Bucks head just out of interest?

apologies, i took your remark as being sarcastic.

On the matchday threads you can be quite nasty to current players, coaching staff and our medical team.. you cannot deny that..

It's pretty hard to compare players from different eras so I hear where you're coming from. However, Peter was a pioneer. He changed the game with his reverse twist dribble wrong'n goals. He was the master. The modern day players are his graduates.

Ha yes, his old man was known for his low centre of gravity. Just imagine, his brother is meant to be better than him. Oh and Will Kelly is yet to get the chance to show his worth. The father and son rule is helping us.

Could have about 6-10 F&S in a few years time. Very nostalgic and exciting times ahead

This is just classic Boomeritis

We probably are coming across that way, but I'm gen-X. :)

GA snr, Wayne Carey, & Daicos should probably be considered along the same lines as Buddy & Dusty. You know that at their peak they'd dominate no matter the era they're competing in.

Comparisons are subjective but I've not seen anyone playing today that is equal to the 1st 3 players I have mentioned.

I hope that in 30 years time you younger ones have same stories to tell about JDG. :)

Loved watching Daicos the most, including when he unleashed a 65m torp that almost no-one can consistently kick now

Leigh Matthews deserves his ranking as best player of all time though

Huge possessions and goal scoring and unbelievably tough

Was an onfield coach capable of changing momentum

He had the will and talent to dominate in any era

It does read a bit that way given he has wrote Nick off before he's even stepped on a field.
Add to it these players are dealing with modern tactics and modern coaches who are all about role players and team first acts like running to position as well as sacrifice of individual brilliance to do it. Hard to get a gauge on it unless they star instantly and get a licence to free wheel.

I do agree with him in some respects though Ablett jnr isnt as good as his dad, nor is Josh as good as his dad atm either.

Imo he didnt have any stand out weapons like the other 2 mentioned. Was a long long shot to make it.
That’s an interesting one as I think he had several weapons, perhaps not to the level of being classed as “elite” for AFL, but “sub-elite” at least.

Aggression/courage
Pace
Kicking
? Professionalism
? Leadership

Tommy was Taylor Adams, Levi Greenwood level aggressive. Hadn’t developed the body yet but had the traits.

Pace wasn’t elite but would be comfortably top-10 on an AFL list. Was legit quick and had great closing speed to run players down in possession.

Kicking was “neat” but flat and travelled quickly. Would compare to John Noble. Again, not elite but very good.

Leadership, professionalism by reputation only as didn’t get to see those, but it speaks to his mindset that when his career ended, he worked as a club runner. Just did everything right, and wanted to be around the team. More recently coached Richmond in the AFLW.

I am as near as possible to certain that Tommy would have been an auto-select senior player with potential for top 10-15 on the list. John Noble is a shorter, faster but less aggressive version of Tommy in my opinion.

Has to be one of the most improved across the competition. I have to eat my words on him as I was pretty critical. But he’s actually turned to a jet. Super damaging with the ball and has really good defensive efforts as a wingman.

You're the one going for ridiculous generalisations. The well-informed poster ahead of you was referring to specific comparisons, and he was 100% accurate. Ablett Snr was a genius; his son is a very good player. Daicos Snr was a genius, his number 1 son is talented and highly promising.

He runs harder and tackles more, and that makes him a better player?
I'm not sure you'd be right on contested possessions, btw. Senior was pretty handy at that.

I'd be more than happy to engage, but I think folks would prefer if this derail ended.

When Josh gets the ball I feel an ease come over me as I am confident that he is about to do something great with it.

It's an awesome feeling.

I'm hoping he really grabs one of these finals by the scruff of the neck and announces himself. I think he can do it.
