There is some criticism of Dodoro, but the defence of his trading this year and last is strident, and it's not one or two isolated examples.

Again, refer previous comments about Dodoro not valuing his own deal as enough.
There is pleeenty of criticism for Dodoro regarding Daniher. Many believed we should have traded Daniher last year instead of holding onto him. Plenty of criticism for the Shiel trade. Most Essendon fans also believed he unnecessarily made the Fantasia trade complicated.

I don’t have any problems with his conduct regarding the Dunkley trade though except for the length it took to come up with his offer. The final offer of pick 8 and a future second is more than enough. The 3-way trade for Treloar and Dunkley was also enough. Bulldogs just weren’t interested which is fair enough.

You’re misinterpreting Dodoro’s statement. Saying he wouldn’t do the deal if he was Bulldogs doesn’t mean he believes that’s what Dunkley is worth. It means he understands why Bulldogs didn’t trade Dunkley and would do the same for a player like him. A classic case of a player being worth more to a club than the open market considering Dunkley only has 3 quarters of one season last year to even justify a first rounder. There’s a reason why we targeted Dunkley over an Oliver type because he should realistically be cheaper than Oliver. Someone that’s pushed out of the midfield loses value.

Don’t think Dodoro or anyone expected the price to be 2 top 10 picks, which is what a contracted Oliver costs. We offered as high as we could and moved on from it. No issues there. All of Essendon, Bulldogs and Dunkley parted in an amicable way.

Josh Dunkley will be an All Australian next year at Essendon (assuming no injuries), bookmark this.

Think it could be:

Essendon:
In: Josh Dunkley, WBD 2021 2nd
Out: Pick 8, ESS 2021 1st (I expect Essendon to be borderline top 8 with Dunkley)

WBD:
In: Adam Treloar, Essendon 2021 1st, Collingwood 2021 1st
Out: Josh Dunkley, Pick 14, WBD 2021 2nd

Collingwood:
In: Pick 8, Pick 14
Out: Adam Treloar, COL 2021 1st

We will also pay some salary.
I'd take it, provided we can do something else with those future picks too rather than sit on them.

All things being fair, i would have thought Dogs should be "demanding" Zak Merrett or Dylan Shiel plus a 3rd.

I completely agree with this. problem is where do they come from? Aren't you guys not allowed to trade yours?

We don't really want Carltons and Collingwoods firsts next year, they could easily be 12 and 14.
Assume we get Carlton's 1st for Saad
And move 7 for Collingwood's 1st

We'd still have both our 1sts from this year and next year.
Also means we can trade future picks in 2021 as well (i.e. Caldwell/Wright deals aren't snookered)

Plus there is the Port/Fantasia deal yet to be thrashed out. I imagine we've been holding back until this was confirmed. Dominoes should fall now to start enabling trades. Whatever they end up being.

Not sure it is. There's a lot of people that agree that 2 firsts is REQUIRED.

Yeah dunno, that's above my pay grade. Not sure who to believe but Silvagni is probably the most reliable being a recent list manager and he says Essendon need to pay big overs of one of 6, 7 or 8 plus next years second. I see the argument for two firsts with something coming back though.

I'd be going Dodoro style and demanding that one of Draper, McGrath or Ridley be involved in any trade, plus picks ;)

You can't use any more than 2 of them though, as you're prohibited via the 4 year rule - gotta keep that in mind
As much as we need to pay overs for Dunkley, 3 first rounders isn't happening...
Caldwell can be done via other means (downgrading one of our other firsts, etc)

Worst comes to worst we go hat in hand to the AFL, show we're picking up a first rounder from 2018 and see if they'll budge.

I can see 2 x future firsts being required. Bombers can trade their future first if they use 2 first round picks this year so maybe try to get Carlton's future first in the Saad trade and then trade that and their own future first for Dunkley.

Whynot.
Ring a few media types and do your bidding via rumours and spruik.

Pick 6 plus say Draper sounds about right. When they say that is utterly ridiculous....change it to 6+McGrath instead of Draper.
Dons like it that way, its what they understand and respect.

Mate, not exaggerating, he should be in Brownlow calculations. Got 15 votes in his breakout 2019 season to finish in the top 20, and that's after starting the season up forward for the first 6 games. He's got the potential to be in the very top group of midfielders. He's already top 20 in player ratings despite barely getting any time in his best position
I fully agree if you look at last year rounds 7-23 when he actually played midfield he averaged: 34 disposals, 5 marks, 7 tackles, 5.5 clearances. For a contracted 23 year old of that caliber I can't believe those in the media are saying he's only worth a first and steak knives.

Nah I more meant for Caldwell and Dunkley. Have to get creative if youre going to snare both for two firsts - that's if Carlton even hand over a first for Saad and don't go the PSD route themselves - in which case you'd only be able to use one.

Think it will get done. We’ll pay overs and WB will understand he is surplus to their needs and extract the value, that elite midfield will hardly lose a step without him.

One outside the box Essendon player the dogs could want is Patrick Ambrose. One of those players that opposition fans don't even think of but he is a very good lockdown defender, while it defiantly wont be a straight swap he is a KPD that the dogs might want as a steak knives player. Also a player I wouldn't want to lose as he is important to our defence.

GWS looking to have a decent amount of first rounds soon, might like to trade one of them up for 6 or 7 ;)
As for Saad, it'll be a trade.

Worse suggestion than a clearly done Hurley

29 and just spent a year out injured. Could not possibly imagine Dogs being interested. Worth more to us than anyone else.

Definitely could, but not if Dodo is threatening them with the draft. Don't think they'll be so amenable to help you guys out then. Think this gets done, and Pies hand Treloar to the Dogs, but Caldwell looks like an interesting one as the Giants are pretty peeved this trade period
