Excellent summary of the election boat scare scandal from Mark Kennedy.

'What we've seen happen with conservative governments around the world is that they just 'walk through' (democratic) conventions and it turns out that conventions only exist when they are mutually observed and universally respected. When governments decide not to follow (those conventions) there's no sanctions. It didn't work on the day but it was a very desperate act that reflects extremely poorly on the PM and Karen Andrews who should be considering her position right now'

I've said that for years, I'm old enough to remember when conservatives sought to conserve institutions.

Shit you must be due for a telegram from the Queen.

The undemocratic sacking of your namesake happened almost 50 years ago. After being forced to an election every year of his three year term.

I seriously can't think of a time when the tories didn't see fit to trash conventions to preserve or regain their own power and privilege.

It's the old 'right to rule' mentality and the belief that those who write the rules get the right to determine which rules they themselves choose to follow.

Fair call but what we saw from the Morrison government was unprecedented, the frightening thing to consider is what we are still to find out they got up to.

"If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.”

David Frum

I take back all the bad things I said about this guy. If he is able to turn $3m into $0 I want him to do my taxes.

Honestly if you're a Liberal, its not because you support their values. You just want to be part of the grift.

It’s an effing disgrace but, sadly, not surprising.

I've always wondered how the country's finances are looked after and audited. All the money comes into the ATO and then gets disbursed across the country. It would be so hard to keep track and audit, I suspect there would be hundreds of millions syphoned off every year into things like this and Christian Porter's legal aid. Scary to think about.

Except Frum refers to Republicans rather conservatives, I believe.

"Maybe you do not much care about the future of the Republican Party. You should. Conservatives will always be with us. If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy. The stability of American society depends on conservatives’ ability to find a way forward from the Trump dead end, toward a conservatism that cannot only win elections but also govern responsibly, a conservatism that is culturally modern, economically inclusive, and environmentally responsible, that upholds markets at home and U.S. leadership internationally."

Whilst he is talking about the republican party it's in reference to their being conservatives. It's a point that transcends national boundaries IMO.

Surely a series of contradictions in terms.

I take issue with the characterisation of conservatives willing to break with the institutions of liberal democracy, but I take your point that Frum is referring to the responsibility of political leadership.

I still see conservatism as a disposition, one willing to consider incremental change within certain non-negotiable precepts, (rule of law, democratic norms, transition of power etc).

Frum may use the term conservative here, but he's not really talking about conservatives abandoning democracy; he's talking about the thrall of and seduction by neo-fascist, authoritarian elements looking to co-opt through appeal to grievance and narcissistic collusion. And once ensconced an assault on those institutions of scrutiny and accountability - the very antithesis of conservatism.

A take-over, if you will; rather than a shift in the nature of conservatism.

frydo won’t join ‘em. the giveaway was that joshy was always in lockstep with scummo. two peas in a pod.

Capling is correct.

Media conflated Joshy's positions with those of the electorate he represented. Ironically reinforced the disconnect between the people of Kooyong and their Thatcherite member. Helped Ryan seal his fate really.

Also Josh is not stupid but he's not too bright, would probs have taken a similar path to Dutton, sensing a chance (incorrectly) to wound Albo and so ensuring he's on the wrong side of history.

so he's taken you in too.;) echoed scummo. often shared 'the lodge' with him. had howard there pre-selection to aid him. used costello as a mentor. kroger supported him. i could go on.
And along came Albo, out of the public housing and single parent household, and kissed them all goodbye.
No wonder the Liberal Party is still suffering from PTSD.
