Jumper clash fails

I still blame the AFL overall, they can implement the policy as they choose (they could sit down at the start of the year and dictate what each club wears week to week, hell we’d volunteer to do it for free) BUT yeh the clubs are taking the piss because they’re allowed to.

There’s no way the clubs aren’t nominating what they wanna wear each week with the afl then ticking it off.

The problem seems to be they simply don’t want to rock the boat.

Now in the past that was usually as Geelong did what they pleased and the people in power were from Geelong so they couldn’t crack down on anyone else.

The only thing that will bring it to a head is if we finally get Carlton or Essendon good enough to make a grand final.

The other issue is it’s something that needs to be sorted out in July for next year given the incompetence of some manufacturers these days requiring 12 months to prepare next years jumpers…

It’s especially funny when so called clash jumpers make the problem worse
I can never quite understand the lack of desire to have nice, opposite jumpers for the ease of viewing experience, given the amount of money being spent on growing the game.

This Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people in the Northern States, who the AFL spends significant money on to try and become new followers of the game, will we watching their one and only game of the season. The AFL could create a better, more enjoyable, pleasant viewing experience (even if subconsciously) by having the two jumpers pop out as much as possible from each other. They're actively choosing not to. You're literally losing out on fans for next year because of it, yet, if Sydney were to wear white, would anyone really care?

It’s because some supporters of clubs who continually cause jumper clashes try and push a false narrative that the AFL tells every team what to wear for every game in order to absolve their club.

It’s not to absolve the clubs at all. It is a fact that the AFL nominates and is responsible for uniforms.

Clubs sook and whinge about things all the time - including this issue - and the AFL overrules them and gets on with it.

The clear issue here is that the AFL has absolutely no idea what it is doing. It doesn’t understand the issue nor know how to address it consistently to get the best outcome.

This is illustrated by the details - above - the Swans and Lions wear different combinations every time they play.

The AFL has no idea.

Except one very clear example debunks this, Geelong wearing the navy shorts v Collingwood in a final because they were upset at playing in front of 95,000 instead of 25,000 fans…

That was Geelong decision, not the AFLs…

Don't understand how all of a sudden, the minor premier's home strip priority goes out the window because it's not a Victorian club.
That was just Eddie McGuire rules lawyering after he lost a coin toss fair and square.

That's the issue though. 'Dictate.' I wouldn't be taking initial choice off the clubs.

Home clubs wear their home strip. If there is an issue with what the away club is wearing, that's when the AFL step in. This very thing happened in Tottenham v Arsenal last week - two clubs that have always worn their home strips in games against each other. Arsenal intended to wear their home strip at Tottenham Stadium, but have more white in their shirt for 2025, so the EPL and referees committee ruled they had to wear a contrasting alternate strip. Decisive action when it was required.
Yeh I have no issue with that personally.

I’m on record for saying if you’re the away team you shouldn’t EVER be in home kit cause I like the simplicity of that.

In any event we could still have clubs nominate and the afl decide (or dictate) if they didn’t **** it up so often

I'll fix that up for you.

Except one very clear example debunks this, Collingwood failing to wear an appropriate clash top v Geelong in a final because they..... um.. actually I'm not sure why they didn't.

Also had that been at the home teams venue, 70,000 more people would've watched on the telly. You know, where the real money is.

Because Geelong wanted to make a quick power move against the AFL not letting them play at Sardine Oval by wearing navy shorts for the first time against the Pies in almost 20 years? Lol

Was an agreement between Eddie and Costa allegedly in the early 2000s. You really didn't notice that every single matchup until and since then (incl. some greats like the '07 prelim) has featured Cats in all-white and Pies all-black regardless of ladder position or home/away status?

Teams pissing themselves over which colour shorts they wear is part of the problem this thread pushes back against and reflects how far back clubs still have their thinking in this regard.

Not related to the topic but are you saying 70,000 more people watching TV > 70,000 ticket sales at finals ticket prices?

1st point.... Of course I noticed. For that one game Geelong made a point and have since moved on. That's with regards to the shorts. They'd more than likely still like an actual home final

2nd point.... Probably not. Maybe? The way ch7 crap on about night games you'd think so. I mean they did make up the 320pm start time to flow directly to their news so who knows.

As they should for all home games aside from a few select sides.

For example, why does Geelong wear white shorts against St Kilda when it’s Geelong’s home game?

Because they are practical?

But I see no reason why they can’t wear the blue shorts v the hawks in brown

Note apparently that era hawks wore brown shorts mostly but had to forgo the striped socks for the ‘chicken legs’ socks

Now hardly anyone has long socks

I totally forgot I had this in my jumper collection until today. This with the swans in either red or white shorts would have actually been perfect today. They still get the traditional front for all those who froth that and the contrast with the maroon (noting I still think the lions should be in a clash that actually works for the day) IMG_5895.jpeg IMG_5894.jpeg

Lions yellow clash with yellow shorts would have been mint. Something like the below.

So much better with the matching shorts. I do think we could do with an all blue option as well. Would be better against some of the other red/orange/yellow teams
