Don’t confuse defensive with conservative.
Two different things. Ross is defensive but not conservative. He’s ruthless when he needs to be
Yeah, my wording was inappropriate. I know RTB can get quite creative. Dare I say it, he's dynamic compared to JL.
I still think JL can learn and evolve, but it seems it'll take some suffering to learn the lessons, if learnt.

There was about 4:50 left in Q4 when JL finally moved some magnets around properly tonight and we kicked 3 goals in that time.
He didn’t bring Walters on until near the end of the third quarter.

If he has done either of these even 20 min sooner, we win easily.
It’s absolutely maddening

It’s like I said above he is scared to make changes and it IS maddening

I was under the impression that part of the supporter base grips about Ross was his defensiveness - then we decided to hire a coach that was just as defensive but with less tactical nous?

This is exactly what I said at the time. Same issues, different face.

We were saying the same things last year after the saints loss - it's exactly the same issue then as now.

The game has left JL behind, not sure if he has it in him to change. From the outside he seems incredibly conservative.

There's a great quote from Clarko in the book Time and Space, where he talks about the use of the cluster in 2008. To summarise, he said he didn't expect the competition to work around it so quickly and it took him time to catch up again. Not that it was the first use of zoning in AFL, but just the first really successful one.

We have been solved and you can't tell me that a team with the players we have in the middle and the back half should be struggling to move the ball.

I hope Justin is the man to change but there's nothing there to indicate that he is.

Jl in 2019 and 2020 moved magnets around and got the team gelled for 2021/22. He needs to abandon whatever the pre season plan was and do the same.
MJ Erasmus Sturt NOD Treacy in. Stuff the experience players trying for a top 4.

He’s capable of it. He’s gone into his shell because he thought the individuals from the finals series in 2022 would step up and improve. Time to change that and take on season 2023 as if it’s 2019, his first. Refresh

Been a big fan on JL up until this year & thought he had us on the right track.

I will say I haven’t seen tonights game but alarm bells were ringing after last week. We are being over coached. The players no longer play with their natural flare that got them drafted, we are playing structured controlled bullshit that doesn’t allow for natural instincts.

I constantly look back at Heath Chapmans draft video, where is that player? The one who took it on, broke the lines & took hangers? Players come into AFL clubs & bring with them the skills they were drafted for. They come into Freo & they are taught to play a controlled, slow cautious game.

Collingwood are flying because they are backed in to play with flare & their natural abilities are on show, the style that got them drafted.

Let them play JL, the players need to be freed up!

And Chapman looked so exciting at the start of last year. I almost forget he's playing his past few games.

JLs rigid adherence to a game plan when it isn't working (& his general lack of charisma) reminds me of Woosha. Didn't JL do his apprenticeship under him?

JL could take a clue from 2 old coaches who know the caper (Lyon & Clarkson) & maybe get down on the sideline & convey a bit of urgency when the game is on the line.

Wondering if maybe a footy admin job might not be more JLs cup of tea?

Go look at some of the wins we had last season. There was a common trend.

We were trailing. I dont mind trailing by one point or 2 points at half time. Hell I dont mind if we are down by 1 or 2 or even 3 goals at half time either.

But for some strange reason, I dont know what Changes Justin Longmuir does at the half time break. But for some reason, we would be down by one or 2 goals at half time then get the lead by 3 quarter time.

On the 4th quarter we either hold on to the lead or blow the oppostion away. I remember a crazy stat. It was like out of 12 or 13 games freo lead at 3 quarter time, we won all of them.

I'm putting a line through him. Won't win a flag.

If he couldn't read the tea leaves to see that moving the ball slow doesn't work in the AFL after last year, he won't last long enough to figure it out. We'll drift along playing finals most years because of talent before looking back and wondering what we did with our golden generation.

Too conservative.

Yeah I made a prediction that Justin Longmuir was going to last around 5-8 years.

As I said...

Freo made finals only 8 times since 1995: 2003, 2006, 2010, 2012-15 and 2022. So yeah 8 years out of 28. Only played at least 2 finals in a row and that was 2012-15.

Its not a lot to look back on.

Just Looking at the South Australian sides in Comparison...

Crows came to the AFL in 1991. Made finals in 1993, 1997-8 (both years won flags), 2001-3, 2005-9 (Always loved the Neil Craig coaching era), 2012, 2015-7 (Grand final in 2017) . 15 years of finals from 1991-2017. They have had 6 coaches make at least 1 preliminary final: Graham Cornes (1993), Malcolm Blight (1997-8), Gary Ayres (2002), Neil Craig (2005-6) , Brenton Sanderson (2012) amd Don Pyke (2017)

Port Came into the comp in 1997. Made finals in 1999, 2001-5 (Flag in 2004), 2007 (grand final), 2013-4, 2017, 2020-21. Port Made prelims in 2002-4, 2007, 2014 , 2020-21.

Its Amazing that Port Adelaide want Ken Hinkley gone. Maybe because Port has had higher expectations. Or maybe because of that 2001-5 period where they were good, they are used to winning finals.

But Sepcifically looking at Ports finals record under Coach Ken Hinkley.

2013: 7th spot.
-Beat Collingwood at the MCG
-Lost to geelong at the MCG in a semi final.

2014: 5th spot
-Beat Tigers in an elim final at home
-Beat freo in a semi final in Perth
-Narrow loss to the hawks at the MCG in a prelim final

2015: 9th

2016: 10th

2017: 5th
-Lost to bloody west coast in extra time in an elim final

2018: 10th

2019: 10th

2020: 1st
-Beat the cats in a qualifying final at home
-Lost Narrowly in the prelim final at home to richmond.

2021: 2nd
-Beat Geelong in Qualifying final at home
-thrashed by the bulldogs in a prelim final at home.

So overall 5 wins and 5 losses. Ross Lyons finals record at the Dockers in 2012-15: 4 wins and 5 losses.

I am probably alone on this.... If Justin Longmuir had the exact finals run like Hinkley at Port from 2013-21, I cant complain.

I am probably hopeless at this, Mainly because I am used to seeing freo being crap for most of the times. I think when something good happens at the dockers, we savour it and cling on to it.

Just think of Freos elim finals win last season vs the dogs. We savoured that because we spent 6 years in a row not making finals.

I said this... I would be happy Making finals 10 times out of the next 30 as long as theres a few periods where we make finals for 2 or 3 years in a row. I dont care if we win 5 or 6 finals in a 30 year period.

I know I've been shitting on him the last week but I've finally concluded to get some better people around him. A change in coaching structure and an actual midfield coach would be a good start. Need some new eyes on this list by people with no emotional attachment to this club or the people already in place. No more poking Willie Creek Pearls into eachothers buttholes after training and time to start butting heads and being ****ing challenged by one another.

Agree. The worry is the flair gets cached out of them. We saw it with Lyon. One example being Crozier. His draft videos had him flying for screamers and kicking goals, but he was seemingly banned from going for it and turned into a defender.

Not to defend Longmuir too much, but as a club we have a record of leaving our head coaches stranded for supporting talent. Mark Harvey left with nothing after Chris Scott and co departed in 2010, Lyon with dregs after 2016. A head coach can only do so much.

I've been a big JL fan but it's very worrying that he has been diced up by Lyon and Clarko in consecutive weeks.

I don't think it requires too much coaching nous to beat him. Both finals last year exposed exactly what you need to do, and sadly it doesn't look like JL has tweaked the gameplan enough (or even at all) to be able to adjust to a team that applies huge pressure on the ball carrier.

Are we all suggesting that our skill and line coaches are no good? And how do we actually know?

Plus our forward line is a mess and our structure around stoppage and clearance is rubbish. Plus our selection of personnel in there doesn't seem to be getting results.

Look i really think poor list management is half of it but it's almost time to call it I reckon. It's been 12 months since that saints game last year and we're actually worse. It's the same issues too, only more prominent.

Pull the pin early and you have more time to find someone better and give them more time with the list. You could keep him coaching but start the search now and if we don't see drastic and lasting change then move on at the end of the year.

I don't think the club has the balls though.

Others points about assistants are very valid I think. Has been a periodic issue for a while.
