The tricky thing at the moment is I don’t think the competition has ever been so even.

Other than the Eagles there isn’t a bad team in it.
North are still too young & unbalanced but they have some absolutely elite talent.

Richmond are sliding & probably on the way down but they still beat us our deck.

Geelong sliding a bit but only a few young players away from being top 4 again.

Hawks just knocked off Pies & Dogs.

Adelaide are just a goal or 2 away from beating anyone.

Port, Pies, Brisbane, Melbourne, Carlton all superbly balanced teams in age, talent, experience.

Dogs are flaky but very good. A new coach maybe?

Sydney very close to the top sides.

Bombers on the up. Saints under Lyon with their full list can beat anyone on their day.

GC & GWS both probably on the upward again.

Melbourne & Carlton last week showed what finals are going to be like this year. An absolute slug fest that was utterly relentless for the full 120 minutes.

We have a very good list but need more age & experience & hardness. And we need some luck.

If we were able to get Fyfe fully fit again, a full year out of Chapman, O’Driscoll gets back to what he showed in his good patch, Henry stays & maybe we totally fluked a gem in Stanley we might get close next couple of seasons.

Imagine say NOD off half back, Chapman up on a wing with his elite reading of the game, marking & attacking kicking. Henry on the other side running end to end & cutting up zones as his kicking gets better & better.

Darcy rucking with Jackson, Fyfe, Young, Serong & Brayshaw around the ball.

Amiss, Treacy, Sturt all with full preseasons, Shultz at his best, Fred in top form, vintage Walters. Jackson playing as a ruck rover with forward stints.

A fit Fyfe with Jackson, Young, Brayshaw & Serong around the ball is the kind of mid group that could power a premiership team.

Chapman looked like he could be the best player on our list at one point & he didn’t play this year. NOD had a nothing year.

There is so much potential improvement just within what we have.

We just need some luck.

Only need 1-2 goals a game from the forward line imo. It’s the midfielders that need to step up - we’ve been getting just over a goal a game from mids (the derby would’ve improved that) which simply isn’t good enough. Need 3-4 a game.

My biggest concern with the forward line is replacing Walters. I’m not overly concerned by signing him to 2025. We’ve got two years to develop a replacement or we might need to trade someone in at the end of 2025. I don’t think it’s a concern needing to fill one or two spots (wing might be the other if Henry leaves).

Our midfield also hasn’t scored enough this season. It might be an issue when it comes to scoring as a team tbh. Good teams get most of their goals from forwards but their mids still contribute more than 2-3 goals a game - ours barely cover one a game.

Interesting take, watching the games live I’ve wondered if Walters will still be best 22 in another 12 months. His pressure has dropped right off. He’s still smart and his kicking elite, but we struggle to lock the ball in our front half. Sometimes he’s part of the problem.

One of the biggest tragedies of this year was wasting Sonny’s stellar season. Hopefully he can still contribute next year

solid analysis.

The question is....

Say if Justin Longmuir stays for another season or 2 and we keep the same best 23 for another season or 2. Are we finals contenders?

Hmm let’s say we get one more win.
Ten wins this year. Would you say ten wins with this maturing list would be good enough?

By middle of the year he has to be in the positive for him to survive imo. I don’t think another average year is good enough, we have to be progressing.

And that also includes consistency of style of football and also some flexibility within game coaching
By maturing list, do you mean our list which has been 2nd-4th youngest in the league week to week? Because i'm not sure that could really be called a mature list....

Yeah we belted west coast by 101 points.

Its weird.... Both teams are in the bottom 6. The dockers dont look like a bottom 4 or bottom 6 side to be fair with the types of sides we have beaten this season.

I have said this about west coast. They will spend at least 4 or 5 years in a row not making finals.

They finished 9th in 2021, 17th in 2022, they look like finishing bottom in 2023. I cant see them do anything dramatic and make finals in 2024. their longest period of no finals is 3 years in a row in 2008-10 and 2021-23.

As you say it is pretty even competition, so we have to find a way to get ahead
of the curve.
That’s a mental strength, resolve that pushes people to exceed expectation.
I remember a story of how Woosha, Jacko would run quicker up hills because
the opposition would be taking it easier.
That’s what WC needed to create history, A hard nosed coach and a Captain who
could run through walls.
Everyone stood taller with Woosha watching your back.
Club as a whole were driven to break the chains, an interstate club couldn’t win at the G.
We are in the exact position since inception, highly skilled but flaky.
We need some real testosterone types that want to win at everything and won’t
be pushed around anymore.

Any coach who continues to lose first quarters has got a problem that needs solving asp.

Then again our recent trend has been to restrict the scoring of some pretty good teams (excluding the derby as WC are rubbish)

Some aspects of JL's coaching can be good and others frustratingly bad.

we actally lead by a point at quater time vs Port.

I thought it was tactically a sound game today, we knew they’d tear us apart on the rebound from D50 so actively tried to avoid kicking it to wherever Aliir was, we generated more shots on goal but couldn’t convert our chances, once they hit the front their confidence increased and they caught us out the back too easily with precise kicking.
If we hadn’t blown so many easy shot the scoreboard pressure would have been on them and we may have been more composed with ball in hand.
There were a few questionable matchups, Worner on SPP didn’t work (we missed Hughes physically here). Finlayson was too fast for Cox and Ryan was too short for Lord. Thought Pearce was ok on Marshall. Clark for the most part was good on Rioli.
They don’t have a big power mid, so Young didn’t have a natural target and struggled against their pace. Amiss took himself out of th game but trying to lead Aliir away from goals, this was likely a deliberate tactic but when we we’re struggling to kick goals it would have good to try something different (like get the ball to our best goal scorer, looking at Ryan here who missed an Amiss lead and bombed it straight to 4 port defenders).
Essentially though it was lost in execution in front of goals, Schultz, Bradshaw, Young, Serong and Treacy all missed set shots, while we had a few running shouts from open play the should have been taken as well.
We’re not that far off, need skills sessions under pressure all preseason.

Do you think that is going to be addressed preseason?
We let teams get the ball to the wing, centre after we kick a point.
Defending grass instead of players and the total opposite when we are kicking out.
If you can’t do the basics of footy, you are already at a loss.
I really don’t see much of an upgrade in coaching, training, player management.
Changes need to be made, we look great when allowed to play touch football.
Until we are matched or exceeded in pace and the opposition don’t fold.
We need a different perspective in the thinking group, any decent run coaching
department pick the eyes out of ours.
This starts in the preseason and you tinker on match days.

Agree with the assessment generally, and, in hindsight, with regard to ^this point specifically, it probably would've been better to keep Young back to look after SPP and selected Erasmus for the full game, with Worner as sub. Then again, that might've made the midfield overall a bit on the young side, especially given JOM went off later.
