I think the point is that he was being put up as someone to handle a crisis, he couldn't see one right under his nose (if you believe it), then did the shallowest of all investigations when it began to emerge.
Yeah. I had forgotten that he was there during that time. He must have been walking around blindfolded or he isn't across things.

Bit surprised at the suma hate

South freo boy etc .

The guy has an amazing footy brain just not a good media face - who gives a s**t

If you are hating on him just because hes an eagle well thats cutting your nose off to spite your face

The only thing that matters is flags - id hire brad hardie if it meant the difference

Certainly seems a bit of big footy mythology arising that the anti-Summa thing is because he's ex-Eagle - there'd be some of that, but few really. You can see from responses what people's feelings are. Keep in mind, when he was first appointed there were a few jibes at his WC credentials, but most recognised his Freo roots and were happy with it.

I actually used to know the guy personally (non-footy world) years ago, nothing close, long story, and the word that goes around that he's smarter than he sounds is pretty right. He's no Einstein, but he's more engaging and smarter than many give him credit.

That said, I'm still not a fan for other reasons, most of which have been said ... and any way you cut it, his previous stint with the club, whether Ross' fault or not, was not great.

If Sumich ticks all the boxes of the club requirements then you hire him. I'll trust Bell's judgement. Not hiring him because of the club he played for is ridiculous. Look I don't like the yellow flogs either, but you pick the best candidate available. Longmuir is my personal choice, but if the club thinks it's Sumich then I'm willing to trust them.
Has Bell ever been involved in appointing a senior (or assistant) coach? I would really like someone on the panel who has that experience.

You'd think just little things, like the police wanting to interview him and Gardie about their relationship with Kizons for example, may have triggered some small alarm bells. Then doing a runner and swimming across the Swan. Also turning up to training still smashed. Samll things like that.

P

Outlined application process to Sumich? Surely we didn’t.
If Sumich has been briefed it seems that "the club", as presently led, may have a different take on the historic "white anting" allegations.
In that case it is possible that some of those in the ascendancy at the moment were in support of Sumich in that dispute with Lyon?
We may be living thru the final resolution of that clash.

Yes, but the players looked Woosha in the eye and told him they weren't doing drugs, so what could he do? We all know that drug addicts are honest and trustworthy. I can remember my (at the time) Eagles supporting wife saying how much she admired Woosha for being so open about it all on the Footy Show. She now hates all things Eagles with a passion, primarily because of the way they treated that whole issue.

West Coast have had a drug problem as far back as the 90's - I remember attending the Chris Mainwaring Camp and Chris not being there because he had been charged with possession of Marijuana .

Longmuirs credentials appear sound, but my lord he is a terrible speaker. Speaking, especially to your players and the media is an important quality to have.
I've not heard him speak, but if this is true it means both he and Sumich unsuitable imo.

It's not popular here but I'd like Brad Scott. He just didn't have the cattle at North to go any further. And he's literally identical to Chris who is a polished media performer, popular with the players and undoubtedly successful.

As I've said before Sumich has baggage as far as Freo is concerned (so hardly in sync with a presumed desire for a fresh chapter) pair that with it being unlikely Sumich's coaching credentials/chops would stand above those included in a reasonably wide field.

I agree but I'm sure that will improve over time. I also don't think Clarkson is the best communicator either.

If we do appoint JLO, my preference would be for a fairly experienced assistant that could also assist with the media duties (i.e Scott, Williams etc).

All this goss about performing to the media being so important is laughable.
Should of kept lyon because he can talk to the media so well 🤪
Agree JL needs fine tuning when he’s put on the spot but when he speaks to the players and answers general questions his fine. The rest will come

but it does sound funny...appoint a senior coach then have someone to handle what really he should be capable of doing if appointed.

interesting that adelaide got dunstall on their review panel, wasn't he the guy that chose clarkson?
if he was free and willing to go to adelaide, surely he would have accepted an offer from freo?
feels like they haven't nailed this panel tbh

Yeah because a former captain of the club who came back to the club the year after he'd won a premiership and a BnF doesn't have any loyalty to the club.

For anyone questioning him, listen to him on ABC Stories pod from a little while back.
