Trump eventually moved on, so it's not like he stalled the whole country on the basis of that. That's as far as I can defend the guy who carried on like that. I am not a fan of Trump. I am not a fan of either clown in this race.

Wasting time thinking/overcomplicating? It's more a discussion of things that I find interesting.

But it is getting a bit frustrating now and pointless when I have to start arguing the merits of freedom of speech in this thread (not you in this instance by the way).
Free speech does not mean free from comment or consequences

But it is true that I do lean more authoritarian than most here.

He did nothing of the sort. Did you miss “and has refused to commit to accepting losing this one if it comes to that”?

If it comes to the crunch, democracy is far more important than freedom of speech, and Trump has consistently refused to abide by the rules of democracy.

So he’s a cheat.

Free speech for cheats who refuse to abide by the rules that everyone else abides by? Gee, what a noble principle.

My read is he wants free speech for every crackpot conspiracy theory. And yes I know that originally Galileo was seen as a nutter by the authorities (the church) but eventually he gathered evidence (and the assessor changed from the biased church to people of science)

Voting and having your vote counted is freedom of speech.

Trump is anti freedom of speech, no comparison to Democrats.

Another difference is that Galileo wasn’t a liar and a cheat.

It clearly is. American culture has always placed an inordinate emphasis on belief, and now we’re starting to see how quickly things turn to shit when belief is given as much respect as truth and fact.

i’m with you. lies and half-truths have been part of politics for ages - more so in america. but no one has plumbed the depths like trump has in u.s. politics. there is nothing he won’t do or say if he deems it to be in his personal interest. his danger to the democratic process and to peace and harmony can’t be overstated.

Agree to disagree over the importance of freedom of speech.

Trump is a fool.

But censoring the information about Biden's corruption (the Hunter laptop saga) is also reprehensible.

Ignoring or even defending this while castigating Trump is, in my opinion, hypocritical.

Freedom of speech is vital, that's one of the many reasons why Trump is worse.

Democrats didn't censor the laptop story.

No-one is ignoring anything, except you ignoring facts.

It's a remarkable Country , the best and worst of Western Culture.
But how informed is the general population?
Arguably a lot drink their own bathwater and are blissfully ignorant of what goes in in the rest of the world.

Perhaps a lot are also ignorant of what's going on in their own Country? At the very least they seem personality driven rather than issues based a lot of the time when it comes to Politics - that might partially explain their love of the Donald.
The other phenomenon is where they get their information from - if it's Cable News , Reality TV and the Internet they are truly ****ed................

It's also a really really really big country. Third biggest in the world. (Admittedly by a long way.) So room for quite some diversity of life stories.

This election really is life and death for women. Absolutely horrific.
The fact that it really is life and death and yet it's still this close and still a shit ton of women young and old who will vote for Trump is highly concerning.

They won't care until it happens to them or someone they know and love. Which is horrifically sad.

We should be trying to protect each other.

I'm so nervous, I'd love a Comfortable Harris win, but god I have this awful sense of dread that I'm watching the series final of democracy.

Project 25 should have been enough to stop most sane people from voting for Trump.

Of course a Kamala presidency wouldn’t change a thing, unfortunately. The Supreme Court ruled that states will remain in control of their decisions on abortions, a ruling that the president can’t snap their fingers to overturn.

Trump does not support a blanket ban on abortions. He agrees with leaving the issue with states.

If people want to protect women’s rights, why would they vote blue? The Democrats want to erase sex-based protections in the law in favour of gender identity protections under anti discrimination laws.
