Past Kane Lucas

You also rambled on about him having 'near-elite' disposal to be fair Sin :p

And again a few reports from one pre-season game won't change anything, seen Gibbs, Yarran and Houlihan shank plenty of kicks in their time and they're all much better kicks than him. I can't see how a Gysberts fan boy can use Lucas' kicking as an excuse to knock him. ;):p

I'm assuming that's about someone else and not me? I think Melbourne went far too early on Gysberts.
You can't honestly think that his disposal is near-elite though, surely? :p

He wasn't bad against the Cats... got alot of the ball early, but was a little quiet as the game went on...

He was a little fumbly but nothing stand out...

His kicking wasn't the best, but did hit up a few good targets at the same time

It was a cheap shot about you knocking me for criticizing Gysberts last year :p

If I didn't think it why would I have said it? ;)

I know how it was rated coming out of juniors but based on what he's shown at AFL level apart from this career defining NAB challenge game his disposal has been fine.

Gee that's an idea.

I think he's in our best 22, he's a very solid all round midfielder and BigFooty reports from a practice game won't change that.
The young players have to earn a game.

Darren Harris: So I think the Carlton coaching staff are going to pick the players that are the best 22. So, you already look at Duigan and Curnow and those blokes getting a game week in, week out in the NAB Cup series. Every young player at Carlton must be excited about the opportunity, that if they perform the selfless team role and get the job done, they're a chance to play in the senior side.

The last sentence might explain why Grigg didn't get a game until round 14. We won't become a top team if we gift games to up and comers based on reputation. Depth and astute selections will keep the likes of Lucas on their toes and hungry for a game.

I don't see in any way how that refutes my point. Lucas also got a game week in, week out and as I said I think he is in our best 22 and the much appreciated reports from last weekends practice match haven't changed that.

Not so sure here Sin - he showed a fair bit last year in patches, and faded out in patches, as you'd well expect of a first year player.

There's no way known I'm writing him off for the year but for Round 1 I'm not sold on him, having seen him in the flesh twice this preseason.

It's not that I think he's taken a step backwards - maybe just a step sideways? There's a number of factors that may be influencing this, including confidence, injury, among others. Given that this may be the case, in conjunction with our recruitment of some ready-made depth in Duigan, Curnow and Twomey, and our targetted recruitment of 2 highly-regarded, listed players from 2 other AFL clubs, I don't see how we can fit him in to the team at this stage.

Gibbs, Simpson and Scotland are more advanced than Lucas for the outside midfielder role for a start. Robinson and Collins (not to mention a fit Houlihan) will be in front of him for the half-forward role. Yarran and Duigan - even Armfield, and maybe Laidler - are in front for the half back role. He doesn't belong inside the packs, so that's not an option - nor can he ruck. :p

Where do you honestly fit him in? Not from your own perspective - I mean, from what we know of the MC and who they prefer to play on a weekly basis?

Aaron Joseph and Andrew Carrazzo are both admired for their 1%ers. Ratten waxes lyrical about Carrazzo all the time, and he's in the leadership group. Aaron really does put the hard yards in and sticks like glue to his man - the MC love him.

Armfield - love him or hate him, but he's tough and fast and 'uncompromising', and he's getting better every year. Especially now with all the defensive experience he's gained, a move to the midfield looks imminent.

Lucas is going to feature at some stage this year, without a doubt. I just believe wholeheartedly that, barring further injuries, it will not be in Round 1.

I have him as part of the midfield rotation/wing. I agree that there is probably too many ahead of him now for a half back position but he'll fit in nicely in the midfield. He's fit and ready to build on what he showed last year, these days I'd actually have him ahead of Scotland which would be a big call by the MC but I believe it would be the right call. I like all the taggers you mentioned but I don't think we can waste too many midfield spots on negative roles, one is enough now that the whole team is playing more of a defensive set up.

Wow, big call on Scotto. I tend to feel a similar uncertainty - but every time I've done a starting 18 without him, it feels wrong. I think back to all the games that I've screamed at him to do more defensively, only to then cheer him on and praise his name for 5 continuous passages of link-up play that help steady the ship.

He's one of those guys that finds the pill a lot, and more often than not makes a good decision when it's in his hands. He is definitely no Dane Swan, but he can read the midfield game better than most others on our list.

My goodness how I hope that Lucas supplants him - and hopefully it is this year! The outside midfield position is a major part of our game that needs to lift, and we're not going to get any further improvement from Heath. But I'd still have him in ahead of Kane for now - not just from my own perspective, but the MC perspective too.

The reports may not have changed your mind, but having been there the last two weeks I'd be very surprised for him to make round 1, unless we have more injured than we know about.

Lucas is more than capable and we all know that, so I was surprised to see him fumble, get caught with the ball, and kick out on the full as he had done.
That is not to knock the kid but rather to state a fact and again I'd be surprised for the MC to turn a blind eye to it.

I have been a big fan of Scotland over the years but I felt his drop in form in the second half of last season may be the beginning of the end for him. He's great at getting the ball and good at using it but soft at the man. I think Lucas ticks more boxes, Scotland is not past it yet an an AFL player and will plat this season although I think he'll be lucky to still be in the team in the second half of the year but I would prefer Lucas in the team already.

Yeah Sin, sooner rather than later is the key - but he needs to FORCE his way into Scotto's spot by displaying enough hunger and with polished, impressive performances.

The form drop from a number of senior players towards the end of the year was pretty disheartening though, and Scotland is notoriously soft at the man (I commented on that myself in one of the posts on this page, about his defensive work - that's what I meant by it but you definitely said it better :) )

It looks like this year the club are keen to maintain good form throughout the season, without the fadeout. The depth we are starting to accumulate is key to making this happen - and I think Kane will be someone nipping at the heels of our underperformers, along with guys like Kerr and Watson.

One wrong move by someone else, and a good performance or two with the Ants, will throw him right in the mix.

Just checking out some Ideal Sides now, might post up my revised version now that the mind juices are flowing!

I’m a tad worried about Kane’s spot in our best 22. I think his pre-season form has been a little underwhelming
In fact I took him out of my Supercoach team due to these doubts (not that it adds much to the post). I hope it is just a short term thing as after all he is still only a 2nd year player trying to find his feet, however, has he shown enough in 2011 to be selected for round 1? Not so sure

Had some feed-back on the main board that Lucas was disappointed last year at the handling of his hamstring issue, by the CFC.

Poster made the point that Lucas had advised the medical team of his concerns but was told by the coaching staff that he would be playing regardless and of course we know what ensued.

Tracked the poster and doesn't seem like a fraud.
I do hope this wasn't the case for Lucas and it would be pretty silly to risk a career after that player had warned you of his concerns.
Lucas did tell me the above was crap and that the club have been fantastic in his treatment. The op was no fun but hopefully fixes a problem that was there since childhood. Certainly looks in great shape and the cramping issue he had was the first time ever and put down to the heat.
Saying that of what I have learnt about our medical staff and some of their ideas my faith in their methods is diminished

Fair enough Guns and sooner hear that, than for some bad blood to have emanated out of the way Lucas's injury to have been handled.

You've mentioned your disappointment at our medical staff already.
Are they too "cutting edge" or living in the past?
