Kangaroos give "McGuire" a serve

I feel like I’m stuck in Deliverance County here. Between the dueling banjoes.

I’m dreading the words “bring out the gimp”.

i seriously hope mcchins gets sued for that. SUE HIM!

Hmm don't think he can be sued as the comments weren't made while he was in the capacity as a Journalist, variety host, game show host, car salesman, spokesperson for for Sony, Crazy John, board member of Athletics Australia or just all round good guy....but rather he was being mouthpiece for his footy club as El Presidente.

Even if he's factually incorrect - no damage has been done to anyone.

Also don't think you can get sued for being a smarmy fat ******** either.

In a short press release they refute most of what edie says

-They get $1m per year no 2-2.5 as eddie suggested

- Agreed to by AFL and all clubs - colling wood did not 'fix' it for them

- No connection whatsoever to what jumper the Kangaroos wear.

- They wear the blue one in a purely voluntary way

Not happy eddie
They also win stuff. Ouch...

Why not your mob.....
you did after all sell your soul and your famed club colours wearing orange against us in 2000 !!! :D
then lose them as a major sponsor to your biggest rival in recent times ! :p
and finally, how about put a chip on yr left shoulder to balance the 'massive' chip on yr right shoulder !
And your club sold out when it moved to the LEXUS centre. They are both business decisions.

I always said that was a mistake. There is no room for a “new” team in this market and I don’t think there is room for a split market team anywhere. Canberra is a failure. Just get the F. out of there.

Canberra is not a mistake, it never was or is planned to be a part of looking to move outside of Melbourne. Sydney was a mistake. It was basically Miller's decision, the vast majority of supporters did not want it, didn't think it would even work and would result in the destruction of the club. This highlights how careful you have to be with people put in charge of the club.

Not only was Sydney a dismal failure it resulted in us alienating a lot of supporters we couldn't afford to lose. The only positive that came out of that whole disaster was that it got rid of Miller. It did however put us back about 10 years at a period in time where clubs just couldn't afford to go backwards.

The Canberra government offered us a way to stop losing money on games where we would play at a loss due to our membership/supporter size, deal with TD/MCG, where we were at, etc. They get to promote AFL in ACT and we at worst break even in the lowest drawing games. When the AFL started to fixture games like Collingwood and Geelong there I thought the AFL was deliberately trying to get rid of us like they had done with Fitzroy.

We need minimum of 25k at TD, 30k at MCG to break even, in some of those games we would be lucky to get 15k to the game so the Canberra deal has been a benefit to us but it is not a long-term deal. The agreements are only for 3 odd years at a time and we almost didn't renew the last agreement. 10k at Manuka is a profit for us, 20k in Melbourne is a loss. It is just common sense to play interstate games there until we have a strong enough supporter base.

I don’t want to upset North fans but I don’t like Aylett, what he’s done in the past to my club, the VFL and football and it irks me when he complains about the impact of what he did on his club. That aside he is too old.

Doc is loyal North supporter, his days were in the past. He didn't want to be president again, he only came back because the club needed his leadership and stability. He did that and now he is ready to retire and pass the reigns onto someone that not only can do the job but has the right level of passion for the club.

His first stint at North was fantastic for the club at the time and but for him who knows where North would be now. I suspect we might still have Fitzroy. Then again but for his direction at VFL level we probably would still have Fitzroy but that another set or long winded arguments. That was then. He can’t drive a football club forward any more. I don’t know if he can actually drive any more.

Most people do not know a lot about our history, while a merger seems like a loss of identity, it can be if you are not the dominant partner in the merger. NMFC has merged twice before, most people are not aware of that, most supporters are not aware of that. If we did merge with Fitzroy it would have been another long-forgotten thing 100 years from now.

North absorbed other clubs into it in the past to make it stronger more off-field than on-field. We probably wouldn't have been in the AFL if the club did not make proactive changes to strengthen the club. Other clubs have had been fortuante enough to have 'zones' where they had a very strong following. We shared ours with Essendon, it was not easy for the club to get the same level of support on or off the field.

Football now is very different, all the games are played in the middle of Melbourne, you do not really need a supporter base close to the home suburban stadium anymore. It is also a time where it is more common to see kids support teams outside of those the parents support. What has restrained us in the past is become less of an obstacle in the present and future.

At the end of the day, Collingwood amongst other melbourne-based clubs were just afraid of strengthening our team and blocked any attempt at merger. Fitzroy wanted to merge with us, they would have retained more of their identity with us but it was just a long line of decisions made by the VFL and clubs in general which didn't really do anything to help the Lions or care what they wanted.

It is with some irony that I reflect on Collingwood leading the charge to stop Fitzroy plan of merging with us for fear of a super-team forming only to have the love-child of that merger with Brisbane peak at a time when Collingwood did and deny it two premierships. Had they not blocked the merger the team would still have gone past its peak by the end of 2000.

I think karma is very much alive in this world.

I am not anti-Collingwood though, their constantly looking out for their own neck has had some favourable results for us. They do not want to dilute their vote vs interstate clubs so Collingwood is all in favour of keeping us among other clubs alive. Eddie and co. may dislike us with a passion, but we are the lesser of two evils so it currently benefits us to be around in his grand scheme of controlling the AFL. We just need to make the most of this time and grow to a point where we can look after ourselves.

People just have to realise Eddie does nothing out of the like or respect for us or any other club. He wants the other melbourne clubs alive because it benefits the Collingwood football club. Not for any other reason. He can try and pass himself off as the great saviour to football in Melbourne but he is looking through black and white tinted glasses. If we and other melbourne clubs were a large enough obstacle to the Collingwood Football club he would be leading the charge to kill us off.

There is no gratitude when someone is looking out for their own neck and it as a result manages to benefit you in the process. His agenda is pretty transparent and pretty obvious, he should give up trying to blow his own horn.

Lovely. Much as the "Shinboner" cliche bugs me sometimes, I'd rather my club's pride and link to their history famously beating in their chests, than worn on the outside.

Keep as many of the black and white stripes as you can still still see peeping out from behind sponsors' logos, if that's really all that makes the club to you. Home doesn't matter, playing with the strength of "the Machine" doesn't matter, as long as the wardrobe is okay. Each to their own, I guess.
Well put.

Wasn't it the Roos that were the chief club to experiment with Friday night games. Then, only after they became accepted and popular and good exposure for sponsors, then and only then did Collingwood capitalise on the Roos vision and hard work. Thats why they get the sponsors they do.

So in reality it has been the Roos that have proped up Collingwood, the club that lets others do the hard work and then cashes in.

The only question that remains to be answered is when will Collingwood learn to stand on its own two feet and stop bludging off the rest of the competition.

Excellent Point!

Get over it, you scraped in against a half strength bottom end side. Stop ranting and frothing at the mouth and worry about the kangas and how the ******** they are going to win a final.

So it was the jumpers that nearly made the Kangas loes. Now I see the problem. Naughty jumper. Bad bad jumper. Kane the jumper.

Is that like Collingwood nearly won a flag... your life must be full of nearlys... :D :D

Yep. But the jumper didnt have any part in our failure. Not that bad jumper making the roos loes.

Tas, I understand the financial angle to Canberra. It’s bandaid stuff though. Sometimes all you need is a bandaid. North need more. They won’t lose the converted but they will have less chance of new converted in Melbourne IMO. It’s a focus thing and it presents the wrong image. I know some North people don’t like all the focus on the shinboner stuff but it is something very marketable and it is something that is positive.

We are from North Melbourne and we will take you all on and beat your arses. Not we are the Kangaroos and we’ll play wherever the money takes us because we are desperate just to exist.

There is a very different focus and which you think kids today are more likely to fall in love with. I’m not talking about watching games on TV I’m talking about falling in love with the team, the club and wanting to institutionalise in their family. That is partly why I want to keep the black and white stripes but that’s another debate. You are right about less family loyalty in clubs. That is probably due to a range of reasons but IMO the main one is parents taking the kids to the games. That is what brings the club into the family. Let the kids go to school and be influenced by a mate, let them be influenced by won wins the flag and they will be. You probably can’t and perhaps shouldn’t prevent that but take them to the games an sing the song at the end and the next generation is secure. My 2 ½ year old son has been to quite a few games. We went to Coll v WCE. Since then when he sees Collingwood on TV he says we have to sing the song and clap while we’re doing it. His day care teacher is a Pies supporter. He made her sing the song and then told her it was wrong. She left out the “core blimey”. That is all from going to the footy and he’s just 2 ½.

The AFL have your money not the ACT government but again that’s another debate.

Nice post, MarkT - but it does come back to the same problem we've had since 1925. Whatever we do with our kids - and mine is like yours, but with two clubs, from constant exposure to games, training and family talk - there are relatively just too few of us to rely on handing down the tradition.

North just has to take chances to do things differently. Some see Canberra as a bandaid, a necessary and possibly temporary evil - on the other hand, maybe it is a necessary and permanent approach to win new, unaligned supporters in new markets. Like it or not, we just have to do that as well as doing our best to hold and build our existing suporter base. Collingwood doesn't have to - but is doing it anyway with Sydney, so maybe it's something we all need to get used to.

HTH I understand everything you say. It isn't my business really but IMO your club (and everyone) have to work on the basis of maximising getting your parents & their kids to the game and winning over the unaffiliated kids or the kids of parents who don't take them. It just a part of what you need but it is a powerful part because it is what engenders the passion.

TV clubs have less future than live game clubs. This is also why I am more than happy for less Friday night games for my club and more Saturday afternoon games.

It's also one reason why I think the PP system is so bad. Apart from all the philosophical objections I have it fundamentally affects the passion of people going to the game and wanting their team to win. I don't consider myself a fickle supporter and up to now I would move heaven and earth to get to a Collingwood v Carlton game no matter how well Collingwood were or weren't traveling. I'm finding it hard to get myself excited about this weekend. Not because we are crap but because we would be better served losing.

Get the kids to the games should be priority number 1 for every club and the AFL. Who wants top be the NRL?

I disagree. The solution lies with the AFL who have the money you need. I understand the dividend methodology will change and that will most likely help you.

The Collingwood situation is quite different. We play more games in Melbourne and in any event it is an away game that is being used for whatever your view of what it is being used for. Of course Collingwood have a different market position and power and that's all very relevant as to why it can be different.
