Karmichael Hunt to play for GCFC?

I'll be curious to see if he's got the stones to back into a 100kg forward in full flight. Can't see him setting new standards in toughness, but can see him absolutely axing the odd player now and then.

It's worth noting that article from long before where Hunt admitted League didnt interest him, that actually he's a massive fan of basketball and would prefer to be that.

That's something being missed by the AFL'ers here. It's not like NRL players hate the sport or something, and a mass exodus to occur to AFL. This is one of those few instances. A lot of RL players love the sport and detest the sport of AFL (as a game). And im sure there are AR players (like Rooke) who would love to play RL, or are bored of the AFL game.

Remember decades ago....Union players would defect to RL all the time, and it was always the money (Union amateur at the time). That would be the only reason, professional players being tempted/governed by the love of money. Why Union does threaten league, and Soccer threatens AFL. An AFL player with some soccer background could be tempted to play or try-out like Hunt with an EPL or whatever team and receive something paltry like $5m or more, just to start raiding and weakening the grassroots of AFL (like AFL's reasons for the Hunt signing), and young people in Australia are gonna take notice, as would other AFL players.

Just like how a lot of AFL players are now starting to chase the NFL dollars to be punters, defecting. And with the Cowboys here recently, saying how AFL players could possibly convert well to playing Defensive Back or Wide Receiver in american football, there might start being a raid on AFL juniors here by American College and Pro scouts too, with them doe-eyed at living abroad, getting millions, etc.

This is correct, for sure. But people do like to chest-beat, or completely trash the other code about everything, like there's absolutely nothing a code can do better or be superior in than another code. Why it's good whenever you read objective fair dinkum posters thoughts.
i totally agree, every sport has its positives and negatives, its different physical tests.

i find league quite boring compared to union, soccer and gridiron.

always watch origin though. its like champions league soccer, just essential viewing.

Not always, there was often league players who were forced to play union due to their private school having a ban on league, thus they came through the union ranks, Ray Price an example

Karmichael instantly becomes the toughest player in the league, I follow Rugby League as well as AFL and K is tougher than any player in AFL by a long way, he hits like a Mack Truck. He will show a few AFL players how to tackle.

For those who said he wasn't even a good League player, well you guys are morons who have no idea about League he was on track to become one League's greatest ever players his vision and passing ability were as good as Darren Lockyer's. He is also a very fast footballer with a remarkable sidestep, the funny thing is you guys think David Rodan has a good step this guy is out of this world with his ability to move in mid air while stepping.

This is a huge loss for League no doubt, but it is in now way a death sentence League produces world class athletes at a much higher rate than AFL does, and that is a fact.
He's behind Stewert, Kidley, Hayne and probably Slater as a fullback and the only reason he got a shot originally was because of the injury problems of Minichello, who was better than any of the fullbacks already listed.
He's a decent player but he is a long, long way from being irreplaceable and when you factor in that he is a shit bloke who didnt like the game much it is no loss to the code. Good luck to him it will be interesting to watch

Re: Carmichael Hunt to play for GCFC?

Surely a Brett Kirk type I would've thought... the handballing from the bottom of a crunching pack would be easier for him to pick him up than silky 50m pinpoint kicks from the HBF?

Agree with this.

Will make a great tagger/in and under player.

Imagine him playing on Chris Judd with his speed and tackling ability. If Andrew Welsh could do a job on Judd imagine what Hunt would do with his elite speed and tackling.

Definitely. Far better to be a sports-lover and appreciate them all. We do already like when the Soccer WC is on, RU WC, AFL GF, RL GF, Wimbledon, British Open Golf, etc etc. Many one-eyed fans of codes get right behind the Wallabies, Kangaroos, Aussie IR team, Socceroos, etc. Even netball ive grown to appreciate recently watching a lot of it on ONE HD, that ability of theirs to like really stretch out AND bend sideways while maintaining balance on one foot with physical pressure applied by defenders, when receiving a pass....those Goal scoring girls.

Not always, yes. Your point is valid. Tho it'd still be predominantly the money why they came over to RL. There was the honor of dual international. There was just the love for RL over Union. But still money dominant reason. Why RL even existed and became so popular at the turn of the century (money, health insurance).

I still really 'see' it happening in the future. The codes wont ever die. Like how there'll always be AR and RL comps in the USA or Denmark. Or gridiron and ice hockey leagues here etc. Codes wont die out. But codes will get swallowed due the globalism and money and us being absorbed into the rest of the world and our region. But I'll stop harping and repeating on it. Grrr.

wouldnt you agree that the waikato-bay of peace magic is the best name for a team ever?

Great selection, think of the potential!

He will be 24 and at the peak of his physical ability, and from all reports he has pretty decent skills.

I'd play him on the wing or forward pocket, where his pressure would be great. He would also be a great tagger by the sounds of his attributes

I think many are forgetting that Hunt played AFL in his teens and was very good to the point where scouts were interested. It was only because Rugby offered an immediate pathway that he went down that path to become a league player at 17 y.o.

Its like Brogan coming back to play AFL after a few years in the NBL (played AFL as a kid also).

So not only has KH got a grounding in the game and the skills (see Buckley's comments), he will bring additional skills to the game from his Rugby days.

Those who dismiss his fitness need to realise that you train for strength and power in Rugby. Give him a few good pre-seasons and he will probably be running like the wind all day.

he will either suceed or fail. i do hope he goes well. i wonder what will happen in 4 years when hi contract is up. i hope he stays in the game

Haha thank for that captain obvious jks

but on a serious note, everyone comparing him to the like of setanta o'hailpan and marty clarke are crazy. at best those two would have been offered $100,000 initially, karmichael is on more like 800,000. pretty risky if you ask me. why pay 800,000 for a player that you have no idea wether he is anygood. Personally i think the afl should start recruiting footballers and not athletes who have never played football.

I hope he ends up as good as Paul Kelly who I'm pretty sure played league into his mid teens. Kelly was a sensational footballer and tough as nails, easily one of my all time favourites.

wow, massive news! having seen a fair bit of his NRL career, i reckon he won't have too many problems making the transition. he's lethal enough as it is running through a rugby wall, with a bit of space he'll be unstoppable. can't wait to see him play.

How happy would Robert Walls be right now?

2011 can't come quick enough for him as he contemplates campaigner's thighs under the MCG's floodlights.
