MRP / Trib. Kossie Pickett hit on Bailey Smith

He'll get a week for leaving the ground but as Cameron Mooney pointed out to the frothing Brad Johnson, Pickett's shoulder hit Smith in the chest. As he turned his body his back collected him high but the initial contact was below the head.

Are you saying that the impact wasn't as severe as it looked, because the contact wasn't direct? And this is why although it looked like Smith be dead, he bounced straight back up?

Or are you saying that he shouldn't get weeks 'cause the contact wasn't initially high?

The former may be true. But I don't think the latter matters, does it?

A guy got weeks for causing whiplash a couple of years ago. Didn't get him high at all, but cause the dude got concussion from fu***ng whiplash, he got weeks!!

The AFL is just so stupid sometimes.

The AFL match review panel has always been about outcome not intent, the fact Smith to his credit got up and played the rest of the game will works in Picketts favour.

But based on precedence Kozzy should not get more than a week. Anything more and we should fight it.

If he nailed the chest it would have been an all time great bump, but he took the risk and clipped the chin. When you leave the ground, the risk isn’t worth it. 3 weeks IMO.

Deserves weeks if the AFL are serious about head high contact.

He was airborne.

Intentional!

Bumps have never been graded as intentional. It's more for strikes.

The full frontal launch with no eyes whatsoever for the ball and serious contact to the head needs to be called out .
The action is what needs to be looked at not the outcome.
The action nearly broke Smiths neck

Depends if they go down the potential to cause harm route, or the outcome route.

There's also the ability to refer it straight to the tribunal as the scale doesn't give the projected result.

He deserves 3-4. Wasn't going to tackle, launched himself upwards with intent to send Smith flying

How can you condone that action just because he is a Melbourne player?
There are plenty of other ways to block /bump another player going for the ball.
Launching yourself at their head is not one of them

Won't be graded intentional. Will get 1-2 weeks but is very, very lucky he's not being sent to the tribunal, which would have been the case had he KO'd Smith (which was a likely outcome from his action). No place in the game for it.
Is closer to intentional than careless
Has the reckless grading been removed because this one is the definition of reckless
He has no way of knowing how this was going to end up once he leaves the ground

Can’t ignite that the AFL is now facing multiple concussion class actions
Fair or not it’s going to factor in simply because of how the action “looks”

Wouldn’t be shocked if they refer it straight to the tribunal to take the grading system out of it all together

Whilst I fully agree, the MRP doesn't generally ever apply an intentional grading to these kinds of incidents.

Cripps actually concussed Ah Chee, whereas Smith was fine. The action was poor, but after Cripps got zero, you can't really justify Kozzy getting more than 1-2.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's sent straight to the tribunal and gets made an example out of though (with the CTE lawsuit at the forefront atm). Bad decision, deserves to cop a whack, but any more than two would be excessive.
