KPD. What is the plan? Is there a plan?

Agree. Not sure Hough or Bazzo have the frame to ever be big enough to beat ‘gorilla’ forwards. Maybe some lighter KPFs or in the Schofield KPD#3 role.
This is the issue. When we play a combo such as McKay and Curnow and shortly King and Walter who are the two AFL standard KPDs we have to man them? Bazzo and Hough are not it. Thinking opposition are not going to get good delivery out of the midfield due to our pressure further up the ground is folly.

It is folly to accept that pressure up the ground is not a major factor to defend adequately. If we allow good delivery to opposition forwards we've lost the battle already.

Curnow isn't tall nor huge. He is quick and can jump. A big KP defender wouldn't stay with him. Similar to Waterman but better pack mark.

Curnow has a significant reach advantage for his height, unlike T-rex arms Darling who is the opposite.

Who’s not accepting that? It is a factor, but it’s not going to stop every pass to a 1v1 leading forward. We still have to defend the i50 which will be kicked to the opponent’s advantage. Gov’s nearly done, Harry is slow and there’s no one else.

An athletic KPD would stay with Curnow, he just also needs to be big enough and have the reach to outmark and spoil him.

I've listed the players people don't have the real heights for who likely matter going forward.

And yet here we are still without McGovern’s height

You need to hold back on Houghs size. Yes has put on some muscle but he's far from big. He would get rag dolled by a big forward.
If he has to one on one bombs into the forward line and wrestle a gorilla then yes, he isn't there yet (although he has always been deceptively strong). But the game is less and less like that and most of the best KPF in the past few years have been the Curnow and Cameron types that have great athleticism and agility. This is one of Houghs strengths and now with some added bulk, I dont think he is far off being able to do a job on one of these guys. Not the first picked by any stretch but if given a job out of necessity I reckon he would surprise many.

I enjoy that you scoffed at the idea of Maric being 196cm before revealing he is a whole 1.5cm shorter

Defs not Hough but Bazzo seems to be as big as Oscar these days and at 21 is still developing.

Really good photo to show the differences in proportions in players. They are basically the same height but compare knee and shoulder heights there is quite a difference. Oscars head is huge compared to Bazzos too.

Oscar is pretty long limbed which certainly helps him to pluck marks he doesn't look like he would get near.

He is, but Oscar’s real weapon is timing his jump to take the ball at his maximum height. That’s why he plays a few cms taller than what he actually is.

Be nice if he followed it up with landing awkwardly on his head a bit less often...

I struggle to understand the appeal of Archer in defence.

Agree his biggest problem is four-quarter intensity and he floats in and out of games, and being forced to stay involved as a KPD would ameliorate that. But that's a levelling solution not one that optimises his peaks.

He's got probably the best skills of all our genuine talls (certainly the most natural kick on the run) and is ridiculously clean off the ground for his height. Combined with his athletic profile he's got the tools to be a seriously difficult inside 50 matchup, but a lot of it would be wasted as a defender.

Barnett should be down back, less because he shows great promise as much as it's probably his only hope. Having said that, he's obviously not any sort of traditional key position player and doesn't have the appetite for physicality to be a proper KPD. But I think he could be a decent intercepting/rebounding tall.

Archer is not a good lead up forward and is an average kick for goal (the ball has to travel a long way to his boot). His height, marking and skills off the deck for a guy his size are great, again making him a hugely tough match up as a defender. He could swing forward at times but I don't believe in the gameplan option of just dumping the ball on your key forwards head.

If the option 2/3 years from now is one of Archer Reid or Shanahan forward and back I'd prefer Reid back and Shanahan forward.

Shanahan the far better contested mark despite being quite a bit shorter than Reid.
Also he is typically a good set shot kicker.

So real heights - No shoes?

Can you please end the board debate over Govs height too please?
I'm normally pretty accurate guessing heights, when I met him, I'd say 197cm.

Just on that Archer has impressed at training this pre-season with his leading been very good especially when he is in the 50
Outside of the 50 CHF does not seem as comfortable
Also his kicking for goal has been good to solid notice he stays back to have extra shots
He is not like Bailey Williams bad at kicking for goal
