KPD. What is the plan? Is there a plan?

In light of the above and the news James Van Es has joined Sandy Brock at training I thought this thread could do with a bit of a bump. Who starts as KPD if these two aren’t ready to go and what are poster’s preferences with the train ons and draft/trade targets?
It's a real worry, isn't it.

We're in need of a KPD who is strong 1v1 and can lock down...On paper, Van Es has those traits but the injury history is a real worry. At best, he could be a modern version of Ashley McIntosh who had both the strength, 1v1 ability and speed/power.

We're probably also in need of an intercept KPD as Gov plays like a Kamikaze lunatic and will no doubt get hurt at some stage - For this role, I still really like Ethan Phillips.

In saying all of that, the Ruck cupboard is bare, if either BW or MF get a serious injury, we're rooted.
I'm a big Crossley fan, really think he'd add more than either Ruck currently on our list.

Van Es really comes down to the state of his ankle. Athletic and strong, would be a great fit but body needs to hold up. Oscar may find himself as a KPD come round 1.

Well I think we want one of Edwads, Jamo or Brock/Van Es in the side round 1. At least one of them will be fit surely

Assuming Gov is fit, then leaves Maric as the 3rd tall.

We play GC, who probably run King, Walter and Read as the ruck/fwd id guess, so thatd leave Maric probably having to mind Read when hes forward.

Id rather not have to start Allen in defence, but wouldnt be the end of the world. Depends what we think of Brock or Van es I guess.

Edwards and Jamo did SFA at training yesterday. Two very light laps then a bit of balance work and that’s it. Both look a mile off. Bazzo’s injury means he’s unlikely to be fit for round 1 as well. Brock and JVE aren’t even on the list yet so at this stage it’s looking pretty grim. Walter has put on a lot of size in a year, is aggressive and quick. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Oscar starts back.

cupboard is a bit bare.
If Edwards isn't fit and if training reports are an indication and we will no doubt find out over the next month, but I would be using Gov, Maric as 2nd or third tall, he is big enough.
If we don't sign Brock or Van Es one of Barnett or Archer will need to fill the spot.
Gov will need to take King, Maric can take Walter and Barnett or Archer can take Read.
If we sign 1 of Brock or Van Es than they would take the place of Barnett or Archer.

I dont want Barnett back there if we can help it, keep going with the ruck for now hopefully.
Archer isn't ready to be a #1 or 2 KPD either, neither is Maric tbh.
If we don't have any of Edwards, Jamo or brock/Van es to be full back id want Oscar back there

Yeah, Brock is probably the best pick if no Edwards or Jamo in terms of being ready made, Van Es is only going into his 3rd year in the system after spending a chunk of it injured so probably isn't really "ready made".
If I had to guess, if Edwards is looking like he's gonna miss a few weeks, Brock is the guy we sign.

At least if Oscar goes back it means Archer gets a game as a forward.

I know Walter is big, fast and aggressive but he's still a 2nd year player.
I wouldnt be surprised if we put Gov on Read, and then Maric and Van es/Brock/Edwards covering Walter and King between them, with Gov doing what he wants to help the others with a 2nd year ruckman as his opponent.

Round 2 we have Brisbane with Day and Hipwood as the KPFs, no stress there.

Round 3 we have Freo, hopefully Edwards is back by then, we will need him.

Should be enough time for one of Edwards or Jamo to get back 🤞

true and agree, but if playing round 1 against GC King is the only seasoned KPF, Gov has to match up on him, Walter and Reid are only in their second season so if we only have Maric and Archer left standing I would be happy for that to happen.
Ginbey showed late last year he can play taller, so if we are down to bare bones I would play him on Walter and Maric can take the other tall. Himmelberg is the only other bigger bodied tall forward on their list.

Van Es is more physically developed than Brock and is more aggressive. Watched him closely yesterday, missed a couple of kicks but looks more AFL ready as far as size goes. They are different players, Brock has a nice left foot but is slight and gets out bodied. Van Es hasn’t had a chance to show much after his junior years but is strong and very athletic. Definitely the better 1v1 defender if that’s what we’re chasing.

Honestly if we’re going to pick one of them Van Es is the better fit, but it really hinges on his ankle which I know for a fact isn’t great.

Ginbey vs Walter would be worth the price of admission alone but if Rowell, Anderson, Miller et al get off the leash and hit dart after dart into the f50 with no pressure then Walter and King are going to have a day out.

Yeah ok if Van Es is more ready to go then I'm 100% on him if his ankle is good.
I definitely prefer him talent wise.

If he works out this year we are looking ok for KPDs short term at least

interesting that we seem rate Ginbey so much after his short career, absolute ripper of a pick and has so much upside

agree Van Es looks to have immense talent and would prefer him over Brock if his ankle holds up.
If nothing else out of this SSP pair we might end up with a depth player in KDEF at the worst.
