Agreed. I'd stick with him as is for now while the team is winning and he's still kicking goals, not bags but consistently kicking multiple goals.

The last thing I'd do is put Sam Reid into the ruck again. He's finally found his confidence and is looking better than he ever has in his career while playing in defence and on a wing. I'd really not want to see him thrown into the ruck to be monstered inevitably by guys much bigger than him.
Good point. Leave Reid alone. Don't upset the apple cart.

He's had an underwhelming first third of a season. He's been very good the two years previous. He's not the first bloke to have a run of ordinary games, so I wouldn't want to put a line through him yet. But, in the words of Shannon Nollsy Noll, he's gotta lift.

He did have a number of golden opportunities to take contested marks on Friday night but didn't take them, partly because he ****ed up and partly because Simon White was scragging the hell out of him. I still think that Tippett could take those marks even with someone like White trying to grab his arms though.

Nevertheless, I think he'll continue to kick goals relatively consistently. He'll have a good opportunity to play this weekend against the undermanned Suns and tall forwards can pretty consistently take advantage of North's backline so I think he could have a few good weeks before the bye.

Kicking bags against potatoes or witches hats does nothing. He needs to play well against the top 8.

So far he has had 3 chances in 2015. 8 disposals 0 goals vs GWS, 9 disposals 2 goals vs Fremantle, 9 disposals 2 goals vs Hawthorn. 6 tackles, 0 goal assists and 29 hitouts across those 3 games. I'll leave the judgement of whether that is worth the salary he is paid to others.

Carey says to trade him... thoughts?

I think there is a role for him at the club. I reckon he won't be on $800K next contract. He may not want less?

If we did trade him, we could take salary cap pressure off, get some picks to offset some of the Mills and Dunkley points and maybe get a ruckman like (and for trolls) McEvoy!

Rather see Tippet lose some bulk and build his aerobic base. He's bigger now than he was at Adelaide and he seems to have lost a bit of pace as well. I'd swap Tippet and Reid for 2nd ruck duties. Tippet is bigger but Reid can jump. He's not much of a ruckman and won't win us many taps, but we don't need them since we're getting slaughtered in centre clearances anyway.

Delivery to Tippett is average but i think he needs to lead more and he needs to get better at reading the flight of the ball and outbodying his man

Bingo.

By far his best games for us have been when he was the main target and led from the square (see vs Bulldogs in 2013 & 2014, vs Geelong in 2014).

Staying at home doesn't work for him as well as it used too. He needs to be better at marking it when wrestling but getting him up on a lead is much better for him that constantly wrestling.

I'm thinking we expect a bit much from him. He does what is asked, rucks, and most importantly takes a big defender taking some pressure off buddy. They are clearly trying to make space for each other, not so many bombs to both in a pack. Do we need him to kick 6 each week, or doing what he is doing?

Out of interest - what 2nd string ruckman has been playing well across the teams? (Besides Bilclavs)

I suppose the Port duo are doing okay considering both Lobbe and Ryder have had injury problems this year. West Coast with Naitanui and Sinclair/Lycett have been ok.

In my uneducated oponion i think his form all stems from his knee troubles from the past couple of years. With him suffering tendonitis the past few years the club has tried to manage his knee by keeping him off of his feet as much as possible and he has nore than likely substitued his time on the frack with the gym.

He is considerably larger this year,in very good shape with little body fat. However has still got a lot of mass. This becomes an issue this year because he is being asked to share the ruck load. You will notice he normally starts well and fades drastically as the game goes on. No matter how fit you are, you will struggle to carry his weight throughout an entire game in the middle and being used as a power forward. The bloke is spending his fuel tickets very early in the piece.

I would have him strictly as a 0-40m forward. He does not have the foot skills necessary to perform adequately at high forward or up the ground. He can mark the ball and only kick long kicks with no penetration. Cannot spot up targets where a buddy can.

Put him in the square and kick long to him. He has kgs on nearly everu defender in the game and being isolated like that will put most under pressure and cause alot of paniced free kicks.

High time we played to his strengths and not his weaknesses

This, I really think we should essentially "split" our forward line as he and Buddy are both superstars with completely different skill sets.

I'm not sure if we have the intelligence or the ability to do this though.

Tippett would be a 60 goal a season player if played right. He is not a natural footballer and thus cannot win enough footy in the middle.

He is a natural beast and will monster opponents. Isolate him and reap the rewards

Tippett has kicked 60 goals in a season a grand total of never. He's running out of time for it

Well, he's a natural FF. So is Tex Walker, so he generally played as a hybrid CHF/ruck at the Crows. He's looked best for us when plonked in the square with either Reid or Franklin at CHF. But atm, he's rotating through the ruck and getting exhausted doing it.

Put him at FF on a permanent basis and let somebody else be a relief ruck, then see how he goes.

I agree and disagree

Agree thats what matters, deliver when we need you against the best

But i disagree kicking goals this weekend does nothing, a bag this week Could he the tonic that will fix his form and bring confidence

I think what we have seen if what we can get from Tippett, but this year is his worst in a while so far, if people are waiting for him to tear the comp apart dont hold your breath

Ling suggested maybe he is a bit knackered from moving up the ground into the ruck etc to get on the move and lead out in front as much.

While it's likely not the only reason I don't think there's any doubt he's more suited to just playing out of the square.

Precisely. Never been left af true full forward for an entire year. People have a misconception that he is a good athlete. He is not. He hasnt goot the biggest tank,he is not overly quick and and has a worse turning cycle than mathew richardson and sam reid combined.

He does however have strong hands and is a massive bloke. Put him in the square and let him get some experience and expose the smaller defenders he plays on.

If i was playing on tippett ,i would be licking my lips when he goes up the ground

Think he functions best when not rucking....some of his best is when Franklin is roaming around and delivering the ball to him!! Regardless, IMO we are a better team with him in it
