I'm not sure that there's as much difference between academy picks and father sons as the Victorian Illiterati would have us believe - in fact the Swans spent more in terms of draft capital and club resources on their academy players than Geelong did on their haul of father sons.

This aside, I'm sure that somebody with more football knowledge and less of an agenda to push would realise that it is primarily Sydney's rookie drafting that has kept them competitive over time, as the league is frequently littered with teams full of top picks that fail to challenge the 8.
One major difference is Sydney still has access to father son, unlike GWS and GC. Mills and Heeney are arguably your best two players. Your academy has had far greater impact on your list than the rookie draft

Yes, one father son went back home to Victoria, and the other didn't want to come to us because he didn't want to leave Victoria. Your last sentence is categorically wrong and we can leave it there.

And you have a North Father/Son becoming elite before our eyes. Personally, I'd scrap all draft concessions. Particularly F/S. Completely undermines the entire point of the draft.

I think it's most likely he signs another contract with Melbourne, but if he were to leave I suspect he'd go to WA, not SA.

As for Bergman ? I'll have to keep a closer eye on him.

He's in his 4th year and has never had more than 25 disposals and 4 clearances. His highest number of goal assists is one. Impressively, he's done that more than once. Phew.
I know Freo are chasing him, it's an interesting one where it seems like there options across multiple states which doesnt happen to often (though did with Dunkley last year I suppose). Given our current trading record with you lot though it might be best we just put a self-imposed ban on any trades with Melbourne

Jackson will come good, I am still bummed about losing him.

He really should be seen as being the Fyfe replacement and played on ball. He is a ruck rover that can pinch hit in the ruck. He ain't a forward.

I wonder if Kossy will give a move to NSW or QLD some consideration? Reportedly he dislikes living in Melbourne. He has family ties in WA/SA, but surely escaping the AFL fishbowl and moving to QLD/NSW will have some appeal to him as he seems shy and disinterested in the limelight.

Sounds like we are putting him more on ball this week, he’s never been a proper KPF so it’s be great if we stop trying that. TheWest keeps running hitpieces on Jackson and I’m sure Pickett will take that into consideration.

Interesting he hates living in Melbourne, does feel like one where he could do anything from re-signing to going to GC and enjoying the quiet life

Yes let's scrap the F/S rule just as we have Kynan Brown, Noah Yze and Kalani White all coming through the Junior elite system.

FMD..

I don't think Yze will be drafted based on what I've seen. Kynan Brown can find the footy but I'd like to see more. He's getting outplayed by 2 underaged teammates in the midfield at the moment. But it means I can't see a bid coming in the top 30. Kalani White is the one I'm excited about.

Yze is still under-age this year. The fact that he's playing already these early rounds is a good sign.

Plenty of water to go under the bridge still.

Rankine ripping apart Port last night shows just how valuable elite small forwards are in the modern game. Kozi worth atleast what Rankine was, have to be a low top 10 pick or 2 mid firsts.
Spot on. If we lost Pickett we'd have to spend all of our draft capital to find another elite small forward. oh wait, there aren't any. Such is their scarcity.

Rankine tore us apart cause our ruck and midfield were shit and our defense was one of the worst performances by any defense ever

Our midfield doesn’t lay down, or we have a single tall who can intercept mark last night and rankine would have been a non-issue

That's a ridiculous take. He covered the most amount of kms last night and worked his tail off for his goals. Rankine is a gun and Kozi is too, both worth top 5 picks in a trade. Almost 0 chance of finding better natural talents in the draft or via trade.

If pickett wanted out and, by some miracle, said he’d be happy to play for the crows at years end and the crows had pick 5 again.

I would happily accept the crows handing over pick 5 for him…

even though we have more of a need for a big bodied mid..

he’s worth every bit of a top 5 pick and more..

I never spoke to you about what he’s worth, only the take that him ripping us apart showed how important small forwards are.

As i said, if our midfield and defense was remotely competent, he wouldn’t have had the game he did.

not sure that's a great argument as it has been widely noted Geelong made out like bandits and 2 x abletts, scarlett, hawkins, blake all went for picks in the 40s and was a major reason the rules were changed

It is a great argument (which you have now bolstered), as the post that I was replying to specifically said that Geelong and Sydney's continued success over a long period of time isn't comparable because Sydney had access to a mechanism that Geelong doesn't (academy). My argument was that in practical terms Swans haven't achieved any more of a leg up than Geelong did, and that the distinction being drawn between two different ways of getting players onto the list was largely arbitrary. I've now said my part and won't be drawing this thread any further off topic.

why weren't they competent? - genuine question as I had us getting smashed before the showdown and was greatly relieved that it turned out otherwise. Seriously, Butters, Wines, JHF, Rozee and Drew should be winning enough of their own ball and the crows midfield is at this time certainly not anything like Collingwoods's level. Without derailing this thread, Rankine was electric and covered a shedload of ground and earned his goals. ROB had a day out yes and Lycett was horrid, but Port had the edge in terms of onballers in the night and iirc, Rozee was top possession winner on the ground and he is a super player

Difference at the moment is that the power midfield aren't working together as a team. They are leaving one player to get the ball while the others look for the easy receive. Not enough players wanting to lay a block or a shepherd in order to allow a teammate an easier disposal.

Other teams are turning 2 vs 1 contests into 1 on none by blocking and shepherding which allows the player with the ball more time to make an effective decision. Because he's got more time, he goes to a better option instead of the first one he sees which in turn allows the flow on effect. St. Kilda used this to great affect in the first half of the first quarter and were able to "Chinese Checkers" their way down the ground by giving the ball to whichever player the Essendon player didn't cover.

Furthermore Hinkley is of the "The umpire is always right" school of thought. He has several players on his team that need the "The umpire is human and makes mistakes" lesson. Port have several players that when an umpire doesn't pay the little 50-50 frees they feel they deserve, frustration seeps into their game and they give away frees. Rankine was smart enough to spot this and play on it. He committed at least a dozen little acts that are technically frees but are so minor they go unwhistled at least 90% of the time. Rankine benefits with a couple of frees or extra space as a result of the retaliatory frustration this causes.

This isn't the first time Rankine has done this and is one of the reasons he's such a smart player. He was able to catch several Sydney defenders out with this tactic when Gold Coast beat Sydney last year.
