Lake vs Scarlett

Here we go again with the typical BigFooty perception. Cool, Scarlett's done some nice stopping job's the last couple of weeks so I guess that means he's the ultimate full back and far better than anyone in the competition at the moment. Yep, disregard Lake's 24 disposals, 11 marks, 2 goals and all-round huge influence in our victory against Sydney because he doesn't wield the name 'Matthew Scarlett'.

Damn right Lake was BOG on saturday with:

24 disposals, 79% effective, 11 marks (3 contested), 11 contested possessions, 13 uncontested, 1 inside 50, 0 clangers, 2 frees for 0 against, 2 goals, 93% time on ground scoring 171 supercoach points averaging 100 all from full back he is the premier full back of the comp. as he was last year too.

Compared to Scarlett who had:

11 disposals, 91% effective, 2 marks (0 contested), 1 contested possession, 10 uncontested, 0 inside 50's, 2 clangers, 0 frees for 2 against, 2 tackles, 0 goals, 91% time on ground scoring 45 supercoach points averaging 53

Everyone giving credit for Scarlett's game on the weekend but disregarding Lake's the stats don't lie comparing the 2. It just makes me laugh really if Scarlett had played how Lake did we wouldn't hear the end of it.

Bumping to next page.

Also it's Lake who gets the best forward and not Scarlett knob-head, Scarlett gets usually the 2nd or 3rd best forward.

No, Scarlett usually gets the full forward. Bomber doesn't like playing him on guys who lead too far up the ground because our backline performs best when Scarlo is in the thick of the action. When we've needed to though, Scarlett has taken the CHF, such as in the 2008 GF where he took Buddy and beat him. Only problem was, he spent too much time following Buddy up the ground, exposing our defence.

How come Lake took Hawkins and not Mooney in the QF (and round 21) last year? How come he went to Kosi instead of Riewoldt in the prelim?

i think you meant to say "reigning coleman medallist" fevola :thumbsu:

So wait, you're saying Fevola is a better forward than Brown?

I'm not going to bother anymore, you're head's as thick as a brick.

Who was Lake playing on?

Whoever was sent down to full-forward. Didn't really notice because Lake was destroying him all game. Probably Playfair.

The same reasons as you state why Scarlett doesn't get the best forward. Lake is extremely important to our defence and we can't afford him to chase opponents like Riewoldt out, only so they can kick it back in to our Backline without the saftey of Lake marking it. But that's irrelevant, the point is, Lake's currently a better player than Scarlett. As common sense and the stats show, Lake's not only beating his opponents, he's actually marking the ball and supplying great rebound and of recent, even kicking goals. If you've been watching both Geelong and Bulldogs' games, you'd be able to understand Lake's been far more influencial than Scarlett, who's mainly stuck with stopping jobs this year.

That's not even getting to the fact that Lake smashed Brown for the most part this year, conceding only 1 goal (the other came from Hargrave giving a 50 away)

Goodes kicked 4.1 on Morris. Why wasn't Lake on him?

As said above, Goodes isn't a stay-at-home forward. He moves up the ground and plays midfield a lot and if we put Lake on him, he'd take him right out of our defence. Plus Morris is usually a great stopper and we chose to rely on him (even though he got quite a pantsing)

Shhhhhhh! Grand Blue will call you a ****!

gb:eek:

Here we go. Another poster that's too stupid to make an argument, so they get personal. Pathetic, yet again.

Riiiight, so Lake doesn't necessarily take the best forward either? He plays fullback where he is needed most...

How is this different (better) than what Scarlett does?

Did you read my post? yes, I'll concede Lake doesn't always get the best forward (for the same reason as Scarlett). However, anyone with common sense or anyone who has watched both players' games would know Lake's simply been a better/more influencial player. His game against Sydney speaks for itself. 11 marks (3 contested), 24 dispoals, 2 goals and provided a lot of fine rebound. Having watched Scarlett against Brisbane, he did a good job in stopping Fevola and Bradshaw, but not much else at all.

This is where my point about Scarlett being overrated comes in, while he's a good player, he just has to have 1 good game and he'll suddenly be considered the best FB ever or the best FB in the comp at the moment even though that's not necessarily the truth.

I wasn't referring only to you GB - quite a few WB fans have accussed Scarlett of taking the 2nd or 3rd best forward on a regular basis (you have in the past), yet admitted that Lake's most effective position is the last line and so he doesn't always take the likes of Riewoldt who run up the ground...

BTW I thought you were a passionate detractor of statistics?

Well it can't be denied that Lake does get the best forward more often now. He took Brown against the Lions because he can be extremely dangerous even when up the ground and he's too big and strong for Morris.

Oh and I'm not entirely against statistics, just stupid ones, such as the old 'goals conceded' stat or the infamous 'contested possession'.

Let's just say they are both great players.

Lake has been the better of the 2 these past 2 seasons, Scarlett before then was probably contending with Glass as to who the best full back is so Scarlett has probably been better over a longer period of time but he hasn't been the absolute best full back during that time as Glass and now Lake have both been better than him.

I voted for Scarlett even though I think Lake is a gun defender. Scarlett is more consistent and has less brain fades. Both great players.

If you were asking who the better bloke is however.....:)
