Thoughts on this?

Surprised this isn't more of a discussion point. Buddy is virtually irrelevant, he hasn't impacted a game in years. His marketability is overstated when Mafs stars have more instagram followers than him. I dont ever hear that he is a leader at the club behind the scenes like I would hear about Taylor Walker or Nathan Jones.

Sydney consistency competitive since the early 00s along with Geelong and Hawthorn. Upon reflection will this decision be the one we look back on that began Sydney's decline? To think there is still another year after this is mind boggling. Sydney do deserve far more scrutiny for this, could you imagine the vitriol if this was a decision made by Essendon or Carlton?

Given the Swans age profile it isn't much of a problem. Just means in 2022 we will have another $500,000 to spend on resigning one of our kids, and 2023 we will have another million to resign most of our kids.
3 million on one player in two years ... who doesn't play isn't a problem?

Lol

You may not lose lots of players but you're kidding yourself if you don't acknowledge the opportunity cost of having $1.5m spent on a player that may not even contribute on-field given his recent history. Plus even if Franklin played some great footy - so what Swans are more than 2 years away from a flag so its not exactly going to change anything. He's just a salary cap anchor around Sydney now.

If you don't think your recruitment team could have gone out with that extra 1.5m and acquired something useful that would help the Swans for the long term then you must not think too highly of them.

I think issue is you don't really get it.

What he is paid this year is part of a 9 year contract that was structured in a way that he would be paid this year

The Swans appear to have very effectively timed a rebuild around the tail of his contract. What they are paying Franklin wouldn't be squeezing anybody out.

Do you know what "opportunity cost" means?

Exactly this. The Swans wanted to cash in on flag opportunities given their list at the time they signed him up. They made 2 grand finals but didn't snag a flag from it so that was a bust but the exposure in the Sydney market of having a marquee player was also part of the investment. If anything, maybe even a defensive move to stop him luring people across to GWS (remember, it looked like that's where he was headed).

The money now was pretty well timed, given they're not in the race and building a fresh list. May as well use the coin to pay him back for his earlier service.
