No Oppo Supporters Leak of sensitive information - AFL to lead investigation

We all know information was shared.
The fact that Cheney was bragging about it and Stratton found the need to contact Bev shows that.
It's just a matter of proving it and the AFL putting spin on it and finding the best time to tuck it in the bottom corner of the sports pages so it provides as little controversy as possible - even if the investigation finds something, which it might not

I can't help thinking that this could have been handled better by everyone including us. It's become a complete shemozzel. I never use shemozzel lightly.

How so?
Should we have played Talia even though he didnt deserve it?
Should we have kept quiet about how he shit on our club?

He is gone who gives a rats about him anymore!

I couldn't disagree more. The minute there were players from other clubs involved we had to report it to the AFL purely cause we didnt have any powers to have those players and officials from other clubs answer questions.
Perhaps if he hadn't have knocked back the 2 year deal we had made him and he was a contracted dog still we could have handled inhouse but it was clear he wanted out anyway and given that fact I think integrity issues were multiplied.

Maybe it will be revelaed he will get fined for not sharing information - like melbourne were fined for not tanking.

The AFL needed to come out swiftly and just make a statement saying anybody giving out trade secrets is a low arse scumbag and that they'll investigate and punish if the alleged allegations are true. The problem is nobody is tough enough in this politically correct environment to say what they think anymore so things like this end up as a loooooong 'investigation' and people tip toe around etc etc. Pull all the parties in, find out what happened, punish if necessary, get on with it. AFL is becoming a political joke, let's just play footy.

Well if you think this has been well handled then good on you. I think it's lacked transparency, no ones knows what's happened and as a result there has been a lot mud thrown. These things need to be dealt with swiftly, transparently for all concerned. Too much innuendo. I don't know if he did anything wrong or not, it's not my point. I'm not defending him. But it's been a typically poor, slow response from the AFL. Whole thing could have been done and dusted in a week.

Who said well handled? Handled by club the best way it could.

If the club believes Talia passed on info then that's good enough for me. It's obvious he did something wrong in the club's eyes

To minimize impact, the report should be released today at about 4:00pm.
Unless it is going to penalize more than just 2 players, then it will be after the draft. AFL would not want to penalize crows before the Dangerfield replacement draft....

Not really disagreeing with your main points or defending the AFL, TK, but one reason given for the delay was that some of the key parties/witnesses were on their overseas trip so the investigative unit had to wait for them to return. Some of those might even have been people they needed to speak to first which would put back the whole schedule even further.

Regardless of the outcome of the enquiry, Round 15 against Sydney at the SCG on 2 July will be a game to watch if Talia is playing.
I can think of one or two players who might want to leave their calling card.

Of course its lacked transparency, its an investigation!
If there was transparency that is a huge breach of procedural fairness and the investigation would then be worthless.

Might be the first game we trial Boyd, Redpath & Minson in the same forwardline for a few minutes ;)

How would you expect the club to react if your (likely) scenario plays out?

Personally this is where the rubber hits the road and is the only thing that holds any interest in this ridiculously drawn out saga. If we meekly accept the findings as you see it, we will widely be seen as a laughing stock of our own making and no amount of AFL conspiracy theories nor us taking the high moral ground will be able to assuage public perception of that FACT!

We've always been on a hiding to nothing with this investigation.

It's not a murder inquiry, it's hardly the Kennedy assignation. It's actually whole lot about nothing much and yet they go through all this. Amazing when you think about it really. to make it worse they take months to sort it out and leave it open to rumour and conjector, which is not any better than if they came and told everyone what happened. I just hope whatever he did, that he did it. Because if not they left him out to hang when perhaps it could have been sorted another way, perhaps with him leaving the club still, but sparing all concerned with this interminal process over an issue like this. Way way over the top, even if he did what was alleged, not that we actually know what it is, does anyone?

That's my point, this didn't need to go on for months and it leaves us guessing and rumour mongering, you talk about procedural fairness, not much fairness about this process. Great work from the AFL.

What other way could this been sorted?
I believe the club over anyone on this. Not sure why you don't.
The club believe he has broken all trust by passing on important information to an opposition club.
I can't see a bigger crime within an organisation.

Oh come now DW. Most of the games players are overseas, yet the Trade Period managed to proceed. Mobile phones anyone ? This as an excuse for incompetent delays holds no water at all for mine.

It's plausible.
Most players have a fair idea where they stand regarding list management and trades, and would have had discussions with their manager. Can be a simple matter to pick up the phone and say "yep","nope" or "maybe ... if you can get me an extra $50k p.a.". However the idea of justice (even the crude AFL form of it) being dispensed while someone is busy getting pissed every night or doing a line or whatever in some foreign country is something that most people would get more precious about - and they would be more likely to be cantankerous (maybe even litigious) if they thought they could show they hadn't been dealt with fairly by the investigative unit.

It's also likely that the investigators would want to eyeball the players if they can. Helps eliminate variables like background noise, disturbances, distractions, etc that exist on overseas calls and can lead to incomplete or unsatisfactory evidence. Also if they can pick up non-verbal signals they can tell an astute observer quite a bit.

Far be it from me to be a defender of the AFL pv, but I can certainly understand why you would want the key witnesses and the accused to be in the country when you talk to them. Especially if the alleged wrongdoing is serious.
