1994 SANFL Qualifying Final Port v Central. I remember being there, what a game, fast hard footy. The last quarter + extra time is a cracker, highly recommended viewing.

I think that was a 3 point win? Pretty sure it was on the sa footy film youtube channel as wellAh, that’s right. I’m thinking of ‘95. Centrals stormed home but we got the chocolates.

There's the famous story about John Abley, with Big Bob making sure he got off the train from Melbourne a few stops early and hence making sure Glenelg never got their man.Like no doubt most if not all Port supporters I'm no fan of Mackie, but I don't have any issue with him getting on the front foot and saying geebung would maintain their interest in Lord.
It reminds me a tad of the old arrogant Port Adelaide days, when Big Bob would pay various taxi drivers to bring interstate players from the airport to Alberton so he could check them out first even though another club had paid for their plane fare.

The specific situation I can recall re Bob McLean putting one over another club was when Woodville brought a player down from Darwin in 1972, and somehow the taxi driver took him to Alberton oval instead of Oval avenue, and Bob signed him up.There's the famous story about John Abley, with Big Bob making sure he got off the train from Melbourne a few stops early and hence making sure Glenelg never got their man.
And haven’t we done it numerous, times, over, the decadesThere's something special about burning Glenelg
Keith Nickels if I remember correctly.I saw him play a few times when I was a kid. Indigenous I think. P.s. I was also at the AO game you mention. 12year old with my dad.The specific situation I can recall re Bob McLean putting one over another club was when Woodville brought a player down from Darwin in 1972, and somehow the taxi driver took him to Alberton oval instead of Oval avenue, and Bob signed him up.
The player's name was Nickels, but unfortunately he didn't make the grade at sanfl level.
I can remember him coming onto the ground as 19th or 20th man at 3/4 time against a very weak South Adelaide at Adelaide oval when he was beyond awful, he made virtually no attempt to pick up his opponent at half back who had been virtually unsighted for most of the game and then suddenly began to get multiple touches including being involved in a couple of goals.
Nickel's last game for the club was in a magoo's semi final played at Thebarton oval when he was again very poor.
He was taken from the ground late in the 3rd term not far from the right behind post at the northern end, and for whatever reason removed his guernsey and handed it to the trainer.
The situation got even more bizarre when instead of walking back anti clockwise which was the much shorter way to the bench, he for some reason trudged off along the outer boundary and was seen to get over the pickets near the southern end forward pocket.
I can recall a few bemused spectators making jokes about him taking a short cut to South rd to catch a bus.
Once a player was taken from the field before the interchange system was introduced it was game over for them, and it is possible he made his way to the changerooms under the grandstand from behind the southern goals and out of sight of the 500 or so spectators, but it wasn't a good look and he never played another game for the club.
Yes that's him Keith Nickels, he was indigenous and came with a huge reputation from Darwin but unfortunately didn't live up to the hype. And haven’t we done it numerous, times, over, the decades

I have a vague recollection of the late `Pancho' Gonsalves, but I wasn't aware that Bob McLean nicked him off Woodville.I remember 1979 we were desperate for a ruckman, player named Bruce "Pancho" Gonsalves from the VFA played a trial game for Woodville under a permit and looked ok. Bob McLean did a Bob, cut Woodville's lunch and signed him during the following week.
He played a couple of trial games with us and barely touched the ball. I think he lasted a few weeks at reserves level and everyone decided to cut their losses and call it quits.
Funny thing is, he played 5 games for Collingwood in the mid 1970s.

I have an even more vague memory of Jack Cahill not being impressed with him at training sessions and the club not pursuing a clearance from collingwood, so he was cut in the preseason and didn't play any games for premiership points, but as you say it is possible he may have played a couple of reserve's games.
I can also recall a key forward from the geelong reserves who the Maggies played in a couple of trial games in the mid 1970's.
He was about 6' 4'' in the old money and looked a million bucks physically, but he was as soft as butter and it was almost like his head was on a swivel as he continually looked behind before going for a mark, which he then more often than not dropped, and we didn't proceed with him either.
That's him Ford, Peter Stephens and I reckon the trials he played for the Maggies were in either 1974 or 75 and the one I saw him as a `key' forward was played at Adelaide oval. Was that Peter 'Ocker' Stephens? They tried him as a ruck because he was no chop as a key forward.
Also half forward flanker Russell jessop completed the trifecta of failed VFA players that season.
Gonsalves played 5 senior games for Collingwood across 1975-6. Says something about Collingwood back then.
