Crazy, I’d be honoured to have myself represented in a trophy

What if an ex employer was using your image to promote their product in perpetuity and were making quite a bit of money from it. Way outside the original intention of the pic.

Would you want some recognition or recompense?

I would.

The AFL does this all the time. This is nothing new. I doubt there is a time limit of the AFL's right to those images.

The trophy with that image has been around since 2018. Why has it taken until the eleventh time the game is being played for the trophy for the Bond brothers to be offended and demand compensation. Something doesn't smell right.

There is also the small fact that Variety Australia is a charity so demanding compensation for use of the image to promote a charity seems mean spirited,

It's a Showdown trophy. How much money can you make from it? I could understand if it was something like Jerry West's likeness being used for the NBA logo that is seen everywhere all the time, but this? Nah.

That’s for the multi billion dollar business to fix and make good.

Not the ex players!

I thought that a part of playing AFL you give permission your likeness to be used in promotional matters?
Seems like a cash grab to me

Is money being made by using their image on the trophy?

I don’t think the showdown trophy itself leads to a cash windfall.

Rather it would build the Bond brand and legacy, they should be able to monetise themselves more from it I’d have thought.

However what you are saying is correct.

Its only been the trophy ( a rather s**t design) since
...2018. And based on a picture taken in 1997.

There have been seven AFLPA CB Agreements in place over that period, including the 1995-98 Agreement. And the Bond Brothers retired from AFL at the end of the 1999 season (Troy) and 2000 (Shane).

I'm not sure what, if any, changes have been made to explicit player consent requirements for future use of their image over that period but suggest this may be the issue that has been taken up on their behalf by Griffin.

This is not costing the ex-players anything. As I posted previously, the fact that after all these years they believe that they own the rights to this image and are entitled to compensation for its use seems a bit fishy.

They are profiting off them.
Unless the contract is rock solid, pay them.

There’s nothing fishy, if the contract is there, the AFL has nothing to worry about, if it isn’t, pay up.

Who is actually profiting? Are there replicas of the trophy and medal being sold?

What is fishy is that it has only now become an issue despite the Bonds being aware of the image's use in this context since 2018 when they even attended the launch. Why didn't they advise the other parties in 2018 that they wanted compensation?

Edit:

"In videos, put on the Port Adelaide and Adelaide club websites in May 2018 introducing the Showdown Shield with their images embedded on it, the Bond brothers spoke of their pride in the concept."

Greg Griffin is an ambulance chaser.

Reached their peak a bit too early once again. But they did beat us in a GF in 1934.

It was an improvement on their April premier status.

The good old Bays of '34, that's what caused the Depression :p
