Let's talk Ports! Part 3

A bit reluctant to post this because the leeches at tiser and channel 7 will use it for click bait but for those with rusty German language skills - or none (like me). A few boys in Port jumpers (and accessories) were out cruising on a party boat on the River Dahme outside Berlin and the driver got pinged for being over the limit...

Look I know Ill get smashed for this, but it is just my honest feeling.

we are winning games no doubt, but rarely are they convincing. The mark of a championship team is playing poorly and still winning and looks like we are doing that.

BUT - I just cannot see us beating Collingwood, or Adelaide for that matter. When they re on, they put teams to the sword and quickly. We don't. yea ok maybe with Hawthorn for that first half but apart from that, I dunno.

Anyone seen anything different since rounds 2 and 3 and thinks we can knock those two off?

I honestly think they are the two between us and wining the flag.
I got smashed for saying this back at start of July. I guess i was saying it after years of the same rubbish year in year out from this club. Soon as a game means something we turn to shit.

I was right about pies and crows beating us again, what I failed to say back then is cats and giants are probably going to beat us too.

Crows are closer to a flag than we are. It's a sad reality.

Will only change with
Hinkley gone
Esava or B MacKay coming in
Drafting another tall defender
Fit Fantasia and Rioli for a year
Grundy coming in.

Without all of that, it'll be another 15 years before we see a flag.

I agree with much of what you have said. However the Crom are not closer to a flag than we are. Despite the way they unravelled us last night, their list has issues. Their midfield is slow and not particularly good and they are relying heavily on a 32 year old racist without whom they would be rooted. We need to get in a big defender a ruckman and get rid of Hinckley and we will be on our way.

If their midfield, which along with Carlton's, ran rings around us, then how slow are we?

You lost me with "fit Fantasia...." 🤣

Lucky to get 14 goals from a team these days.

How on earth is he not in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

I reckon the club need to start producing content about him.

First Port Adelaide player to kick 100 goals in a season - 1980, with 146 goals casually broke the SA goal kicking record at the time

This week has been absolutely horrible.

What I wouldn't give to have access to a time machine that could take me back to the days when Greg Evans was kicking 14 in a game to kick a ton for the season and Port was regularly thrashing opposition teams.

Technically Greg Evans was hitting on Debbie Newsome (or maybe Dexter) Tim Evans was kicking goals :D

The talk of Port need to finish top 2 to win the flag is baffling to me
Ignores that theyve lost 2 prelims at home already

I think the pyche of this group would prefer to he underdogs at the G than at home
Nah.

Collingwood would have 80k and we would have 10-15k and we have a habit of capitulating in front of big crowds at the MCG against Collingwood in particular but the 2004 GF game we have and the 2013 EF we won at the MCG in front of 50k. We aren't as good as 2004 and Collingwood is a lot bloody better than 2013.

Lose another home PF at AO and its reason enough to axe Hinkley, a few other coaches, and maybe 5 or 6 players if they don't deliver. A loss at the MCG is another chance to excuse a poor performance - we don't play well at the MCG type stuff.

This week has been absolutely horrible.

What I wouldn't give to have access to a time machine that could take me back to the days when Greg Evans was kicking 14 in a game to kick a ton for the season and Port was regularly thrashing opposition teams.
the late 70's through to late 90's was a great time to be a port supporter.

I'm lucky to have lived through that, I feel sorry for those who have missed it.

probably explains why those of us on here from that era are so hard on the current port adelaide club, coaches and players

The independent stats guys who crunch the AFL tables database say goal kicking peaked around 1999 - 2000, just as the game went 100% professional.

No problems in 1980 with players converting 70%+ of their scoring shots, including using a wet heavy ball that was only changed at half time and mud!! GremioPower

Evans 102.41
Walter 64.23
....
Agius 44.17
Roberts 42.21

Coinciding with the beginning of the end of the power stay at home FF?
Part of the answer, but it wasn't until the teens when the Lloyd, Lynch, Richo, Rocca types were no longer in the game.

Its easier to kick goals if you are regularly having shots deep in the forward line and not running all over the place.

Its zones, clogging the back lines, copying total football and high press from soccer, lots of useless running and resultant fatigue, sports scientist saying can't over load players with a 1,000 shots given how much they have to run in training, etc that has put a handbrake on conversion rates.
