Just a question but does anyone recall any switches of play on the weekend? Because watching other games over the weekend i noticed teams using it quite often, but i don't seem to see collingwood do it often, or that i recall anyways. All i remember is lots of kicks down the line to a contest, no fluency

Fair observation. There was little in the way of switching, which was partly due to St Kilda's ability to cover the switch. However, I've made the point before that we had players lining up in the corridor at various stages, but these were studiously ignored. Why? One reason might be that they didn't lead up in any vigorous way, or another reason might simply be a complete absence of confidence.

The other obviously being that the players have been instructed to not take that kick on unless certain of a positive result given we are zoning in the back half. With our skills the way they are it would be the right instruction, but its equally damning that our skills are as poor as they are given the list build we've undertaken since post 2012.

Level headed? OK?

North, Gold Coast (Up and about probably make finals but could easily slip)
Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Swans, Eagles (Heavy Hitters Flag from 1 of these)
Crows, Geelong, Power (Level Below above probably finals bar 1 )
Pies, GWS, Dees, Saints (Rebuilders could make finals if teams above slip but going badly atm)
Freo, Richmond (2015 finalista. Sliding in 2016 to miss)

Dons, Blues, BL (Cellar Dwellers)

And I agreed with you much easier to see at the ground and not on TV.
Was so frustrating to see not only one option but two but the ball is still in the hands, and sometimes they don't even look to see who is free, in the meantime those options have gone. Happened more than a couple of times and if I was the one making the lead would be really angry.

Can't stop. Just stopped by the Richmond threads. Now I feel better
Oh that usually clears the mind. Amazing how similar they are compared to our board.
The let's trade Deledio thread is a gem.
What I do admire, is Dimma coming out saying we can turn this around, been in a mess before but still played finals.. Which is true. Whereas we got sucked in with perennial whingers that want to undo every trade over the last 5 years , heads must roll and think that is the way to get 2010 back again.

Gold Coast wanted Cloke a season ago and offered a first rounder for him with big money. Coll could have gone to the draft with Treloar/Aish/1st Rounder to potentially pick up a young KPF while securing Sier also. I don't hate Cloke but thats an option we could have had.

I didn't mention that, but it is a possibility that they were under instruction to keep it wide. Having said that, the Saints were sweeping it forward from the boundary with such ease that it would almost have been less risky to take the central option. Perverse but true.

Dave, you really shouldn't respond to posts when you don't fully understand in what tone the person is posting.
Cut Dave some slack. A lot of us would have given the same response. You don't know the tone Dave said it in .
Or rather give BPikkers some creds that he can take a joke ; ) Last thing we need is Dave to get upset. He hasn't started a new thread for ages.

We're about to get whacked by Robbo in the HUN again tomorrow so it's going to be a tough period for the club.

I love this club and whilst things look pretty dim at the moment I've been here before... And far worse positions. Seems we can all find things wrong with the coaches / players / game plan but we are only 1 good game from turning it around.

Yep, and so frustrating to be a forward in those circumstances. No chance of the ball getting to you without your opponents setting up.

We aren't daring with the ball at all... It seriously looks like a struggle to get the ball from one end to the other. It just seems like the players are trying to do it one way and if that fails we have nothing else.. Have you seen us try anything different this year? I can't remember any drastic changes in the way we play trying to gain control in a game

Well going back to your original comment, we switched the ball a lot more last year...we weren't afraid to open up the other side of the ground, even if we were never an especially successful exponent of that dodgy art.

My suspicion is that the players don't know quite how to set themselves up down the line, which means we're taking it wide as a default option. The other thing is that there has been almost no linking run this year, which is one of the more effective ways of unsettling the opposition. With no run and carry and no options in the middle or across the ground, we're stuck with the kick down the line. F*** I feel frustrated just writing about it.

Its frustrating isn't it, i feel your pain. So hard to watch us at the moment. I think we need players to back there instinct a bit more.. Take it on a little. Hasn't helped not having two linking players in sidey and varcoe out. I also think we've got the midfield balance wrong, too many inside players without any other side of their game developed to a good standard

I don't think Robbo can hit us with anything that will do any more damage than what we're doing to ourselves on game day... If we turn it around on the ground, then Robbo becomes more and more irrelevant.

Yeah I agree. There seems to be a distinct lack of creativity. The boys don't seem to be taking the game on. Is it just a lack of confidence or has Buckley stamped it out?

Be a cruel irony, given he's the single most creative player by foot I've ever laid eyes on.

Fair post.
Just two small changes:
1. I would have Richmond in the group we are in.
2. I am far from counting Freo out. Have a heap of work to do, and first 3 rounds have been shithouse. But all 3 opponents are doing very well this year, and only against GC would they have been considred the favourite pre-season. Also Freo have also been trying to play a significantly different style of football this year. The rumour coming out here in the west, is that the Board have told Lyon they trust him as the coach to get success out of this group, but said that he MUST change his gameplan, because although it won them plenty of games, it wasn't doing it when it counted. (And the 5-yr contract was to show trust and tell him they will allow the short term pain if there is hope for long term gain... we'll see how it goes).

A lot will happen for all those teams between now and the end of the year - and the next couple of months for us will give us a good idea what group we may end the year in.
