Fair post.
Just two small changes:
1. I would have Richmond in the group we are in.
2. I am far from counting Freo out. Have a heap of work to do, and first 3 rounds have been shithouse. But all 3 opponents are doing very well this year, and only against GC would they have been considred the favourite pre-season. Also Freo have also been trying to play a significantly different style of football this year. The rumour coming out here in the west, is that the Board have told Lyon they trust him as the coach to get success out of this group, but said that he MUST change his gameplan, because although it won them plenty of games, it wasn't doing it when it counted. (And the 5-yr contract was to show trust and tell him they will allow the short term pain if there is hope for long term gain... we'll see how it goes).

A lot will happen for all those teams between now and the end of the year - and the next couple of months for us will give us a good idea what group we may end the year in.
Power are over-rated and crows are very under-rated.

Yeah I agree. There seems to be a distinct lack of creativity. The boys don't seem to be taking the game on. Is it just a lack of confidence or has Buckley stamped it out?
I question buckleys tactics and strategies, however i doubt he is that stupid to not realise this is where the game is heading, the more creative, skillful route. I very highly doubt its an instruction. None the less, buckley lost me on the weekend against St. Kilda, and if we go out there with the same bulls*** against the dee's ill be flicking over to a different game

Just a question but does anyone recall any switches of play on the weekend? Because watching other games over the weekend i noticed teams using it quite often, but i don't seem to see collingwood do it often, or that i recall anyways. All i remember is lots of kicks down the line to a contest, no fluency
I noticed heaps - by the Saints:(

The one thing that has pissed me off most about this season is team continuity.

Bucks' for whatever reason has been far too drastic when choosing our best 22.

Having experienced players like Toovey not play for the Bulldogs pre-season game to me was baffling and now we are 3 rounds in and still haven't seen him, I am in shock.

I let that slide, there are people here that for some ******* reason don't rate Toovey ahead of kids like Maynard and Marsh, which don't get me wrong, are the future, but to me are no where near the consistency of a Toovey yet.

Let's just remember Maynard vs Sydney, was the player that hurt us the most, he was never on his man, NEVER, and he is meant to be a defender first and foremost, had 8 touches and got a lucky goal.

He was omitted.

So I was like "Ok, maybe some experience can come in Bucks, like say Goldsack or Toovey?"

Nope, enter Round 2. Ok we get Reid back yes but....

Maynard omitted and in comes Aish.......
The players that are being paid the most are not in the seniors..........

Aish vs Richmond was horrible.... Along with Gault. Both in my mind needed to make way for some experience, which is still waiting.

Macaffer wasn't that bad vs Richmond, he was quiet but was defensively stronger than Aish and others.

So enter Round 3 and what happens? Where is the experience? Enter Goldsack.
Maybe a simple Goldsack for Gault swap?

No.

Bucks this time decides to be even more drastic, just as the team had a decent second half vs Richmond and a strong last 10 minutes, he decides to go crazy at the selection table.

When the 22 is named for Round 3 I see the team and I am literally in shock, I was expecting a simple Gault out and Goldsack in, but no.

Aish stays. (Inexperienced)

Macaffer out. (Experienced)

Maynard comes in WTF, HE WAS PATHETIC VS SYDNEY?!? (Inexperienced)

Goodyear comes in. Ummmmm Bucks' are you serious right now? (Inexperienced)

So the teams come out and in my head I am thinking, hmmm, I would have been confident with the same team vs Richmond, but now we not only have to carry Aish who is still a baby, but we also now have Maynard who needs to be carried and also Goodyear??

Really Bucks?

THEY JUST STARTED TO GEL IN THE SECOND HALF VS RICHMOND AND YOU MAKE 4 CHANGES???? WE DIDN'T EVEN NEED TO MAKE ANY CHANGES, THERE WERE ZERO INJURIES, BUT YOU MAKE 4 CHANGES??? WTF DUMB!??!??!! WHERE IS CONTINUITY FFS!

So I was at the game vs St Kilda, Goodyear, first kick in AFL football, turnover, goal to saints.
Goodyear third kick in AFL football, turnover, goal to saints.

I was furious, not at the team, but at Bucks'. The selections have been nothing short of dumb. Dumb dumb dumb selections.
Not the players fault.

Bucks' fault, shit dumb bad stupid, VERY VERY STUPID team selections. While we have PROVEN RELIABLE players in Toovey playing VFL practice matches, Bucks has players like Goodyear, Aish and Maynard in the seniors, who have all done nothing but hurt us defensively and barely done anything offensively.

So Bucks vs St Kilda had Aish, Goodyear and Maynard ahead of Toovey, Macaffer, Frost, White, Marsh and Broomhead.

Not only is he stupid with selections, on gameday he is embarrassing.

A very slow reactive coach. I drove to Sydney and watched the horror unfold, 10 minutes into the first quarter I wanted to see Cloke in the ruck and running around the middle to get his hands dirty, doesn't happen until the last quarter when we're 11 goals down and it's over...... What's the point of doing it when it's over?

The last quarter vs St Kilda he moves Reid forward and Moore back.... That is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, when the game is still possible to win, he makes drastic changes like this? Pendlebury goes into the middle after Saints go 4 goals up, it's too late, again.
Frost might have been handy, but his selections were ******ed. Just pure dumb. I'm over it, I was a fan but after the wacky drastic panic selections I am off.
He's just dumb, I can read football games better than he.

Um. Trying to be constructive here in my response to you. Goodyear was playing his first game of AFL footy. He was selected because he is a inside/ outside contested ball player and our midfield got trounced by Richmond. Unfortunately not every first up AFL gamer plays like Chris Judd. Gault got dropped because he wasn't up to AFL standard. Maynard is still learning to play zones and Toovey had an interrupted preseason.

These are not reasons to justify stupid selections. The Richmond game did not warrant 4 changes.

1 was all that was needed, Gault for Goldsack.

Instead he brings in Maynard and Goodyear, inexperience, and drops Macaffer and Frost, experience.

What did he expect was going to happen, we would perform better than we did vs Richmond?? Surely you're having a laugh.

Then perhaps you should re-consider about posting in this thread
However, I'm pretty sure you can find a thread about sack Bucks, sack Pendles, sack Eddie or Let's Burn the Club Down, somewhere

No just Bucks, I'm over him. I was a massive fan, but this year's selections have been beyond baffling.

A complete breakdown in gameplan and structures. Whether that's players not listening, coaches not communicating, the plan itself being broken, or a combination of all three, it was just a thrashing from the coaches box, much like the Sydney game.

When you can't generate any meaningful ball movement yourself, it means you have numbers in the wrong place with ball in hand. When you can't stop the 18th-ranked team pinpointing passes all the way down the field without laying a finger on the ball or a Saints jumper, it means you have numbers in the wrong places in defence. When you're outnumbered every time there's a contested ball to be won, whether it's forward, back, middle or wing, it means you have numbers in the wrong place when the ball is in dispute.

So whether it's borne of workrate issues, motivation issues, tactical issues or coaching issues, we're in a really, really bad spot right now. The days are long gone where we can say it was "just one of those days". It's an alarming pattern - our gameplan and structures have broken down to the point of ineptitude more often than they've succeeded for the past three years now.

Excellent meat and potatoes analysis.

Toovey's consistent at giving his opponent 4 goals and making nearly every touch a turnover.

Varcoe and Sidebottom are massive positives this week. Cannot overstate how important experienced ball users coming out of the middle and the half back will be.

Another sort of positive is if you look at our centreline and onballers against St Kilda, it's almost entirely players under 23. Pendles played the bulk of the game at the half-back with Levi/Goodyear playing on the ball more than him.

C: Jack Crisp - Adam Treloar - Adam Oxley
Foll: Grundy - Taylor Adams - Levi Greenwood/Goodyear

Even compared to St Kilda's onballers it was a young midfield. Bring in Steele and Varcoe into the mix and it levels it out significantly.

Young players are inconsistent, and hopefully what we've seen is a slow start to the season due to lack of experience on the ball. And hopefully Pendles gets back in the guts soon :\

Seriously worried about our backline though, just not sure there is enough pressure down there and good users of the ball. No Rambo and Shaz for the year sucks.

SO for the most part this seems like the spot for this thought:
A full preseason refining a new (or at least updated) defensive gameplan of zoning to control/mitigate the attacking use of precise kicking is practised by:
a) setting up an attacking group of your team's best kicks against a defending group of essentially, your team's weakest kicks and therefore likely VFL starters, or
b) setting up a defensive group of AFL starters, with VFL quality kicking trying to break the zone, or
c) a mix of skill levels in both defensive and offensive groups.
Now it's obviously the reality very much simplified, but a) improves the defensive structures of your bottom twenty and does little for your top twenty's offensive structures and skills. b) does little for your top twenty's defensive structures and likely humiliates your bottom twenty, SO c) is probably the best way to train and practise these structures, which clearly need to be done in 18 v 18 simulations on a full size field.
Of course Our Pies have amongst the worst skills in the comp and will therefore gain much less improvement (and more misguided confidence) from practising defensive structures against ourselves than from in game performance against teams with superior skills, BUT the misguided confidence takes a serious whack from, say, a Sydney team going full-steam, and on a very different ground to that which we practised on all summer, and the ACTUAL quality of our structures, exacerbated but a sharp drop in confidence, gets us to where we are now.
It's logical that, with the right coaching, that hit to the confidence can be evened out at least and the team can re-begin getting better at what they're trying to do with a better understanding of where they're at and up against sharper skills trying to pick them apart. AND with some tweaks from the coaches as they go, they will improve.

So it's miserable now, but as long as we don't expect a 180 turnaround against Melbourne, it shouldn't get worse ... we've just got all year to figure out whether we have the right coaching. And maybe next pre-season we practise defensive structures against the Dogs or Hawks (Eddie..open the checkbook!)
