All the best to him but key position players taken at this stage of the draft rarely make it up forward so it's best to temper ones expectations.

Never Say Never

Yep. Still Excited from last night and got Rookie Draft.

Plus going put Early with 1 of my Carers this Morning
Good on you TD, hope you have a great day. Looks like we've done well, hopefully exciting times ahead.

Welcome to Liam, hopefully not too much pressure placed on him to deliver too soon and he develop his game in the 2s for a year or two.

Would be great if we can land Callow or Treacy to play alongside him

Dekka must’ve read this bit...
“Even if he is pushed to the rookie draft or made to develop over another year outside the elite system, he looms as a shrewd choice, especially given plenty of clubs will be on the look-out for a key forward”

Poor Dave! 5th draft selection. Working on these intros like a 3rd world TopShop worker.

Gee.. McMahon is a punt. At 18 and 84kg... hopefully they give him 4 years to bloom. Otherwise a wasted pick.

Good luck Liam! Welcome to the family
About the same as Will Kelly then but 2 years younger.

From what i understand, Logan McDonald was ranked fairly low, but made his move this year playing in the WAFL. So wonder how many players of a similar nature would have bolted, but were unable to play.
At the end of the day, we needed one genuine KPP from this draft...so if the clubs ranks him as the best available with lots of upside, then I'm happy with the pick.

So long as he gets a proper run at it. No point taking these types and then delisting them within two years like they did McLarty... and like the Blues did Silvagni, like Bombers did Gown

We obviously don't know if he was on another clubs radar, but would have preferred a late pick, not early/mid 2nd round.

Hope he is not a 2023 delistee.

Fingers crossed that this draft is a pivotal moment for the positive.

Not liking the words “project” and “potential” I always worry about them.

80-90% of the draftees this time around are "projects" and drafted on "potential" because they didn't get their top age year of competitive footy in. Ultimately aside from a small handful of players who are clearly ready for senior footy right now the majority are being drafted based on projections of what their top age year might be based on their performances in their under-age year.

Every club probably has their fingers crossed a little that they picked the right kids and that they'll flourish at AFL level, despite missing what has to be the single most important year of development in their junior footballing careers.

I'm disappointed you've moved away from the traditional more information to follow opening post and have put in profiles.

McDonald was top 20 already heading in to this year, so no he wasn’t ranked fairly low.

Fair enough, but point still stands that he went from a potential top 20 to a top 3 pick on the back of a solid 2020 season...something that McMahon wouldn't have had the benefit of.

True.

What I’ve just noticed in Maggie5 ‘s stats too is 25 disposals? Surely that’s not an average of possessions per game? That’s ****ing enormous fora KPP.

I'd argue that every draft most players are drafted as projects and on potential. New draftees who can have an immediate impact are pretty rare. The difference this year is that the recruiters have less evidence to base their decision regarding the most likely to succeed projects.
