I had to ring Matt Birney's office this week for one reason or another lol, and the reception was very icy to say the least. Sounded like the secretary had had a very busy week lol.

How is it that the Libs are so strong in Federal politics but an incompetent non-entity at the State level?

Situation's the exact reverse for Labor.

Simple adage - generally Governments lose elections, Oppositions don't win them. Examples - Liberals in 1983, Australia had just been thru a drought, recession plus a wage freeze (a major blunder) and we were going nowhere with the Libs so along comes Hawke (created reason to vote ALP) and bingo. The ALP in Victoria and SA in the early 90's - both booted out due to both state based banks/building societies going under and huge bailouts of taxpayers money. 1999 loss by Kennett is an anomaly however in all probablity due to his personality didn't sit well with most and also explains why ALP was voted out in 1996 (as Keating was generally loathed by most) even though the country was recovering but we must remember that neither the ALP in Victoria in 1999 and in SA in 2002 had a majority and relied upon independents to govern but as the economy was still strong they both benefited from the incumbency (they didn't stuff up and people didn't have a reason to vote them out)

At the moment, Federal Government is not doing anything economically wrong (nothwithstanding it is on a number of other fronts re: Iraq and AWB) and the same with the State Governments therefore until the next recession hits basically status quo will remain unless a government really does stuff it up and loses confidence with the people.

Example - SA Government returned last week with an increased majority - there was no reason to throw them out - low unemployment and people are happy.
