I would have liked to have picked up Chloe Gaunt but the price was probably a little steep. Would like to see us think outside the box with the next pick.

I thought we only had two picks?

Players selected: Claudia Wright (pick No.16), Lilly Baker (Academy, pick No.39)

Plucked out of Western Australia, Claudia Wright is a neat running option who can slide into nearly any role on the field. At 172cm, she is a strong option across half-back as an aerial interceptor, while also able to rebound aggressively, and has shown some real toe on the wing. She hasn't had the best run with injury, missing the 2024 national championships with a fractured leg, but will be well-supported at the Lions. Given her capacity to take the game on, however, she will slot into their system brilliantly. Academy option Lilly Baker was Brisbane's other selection for the evening, offering key defensive support in the wake of Kate Lutkins and Jade Pregelj's retirements, and the expected move of Poppy Boltz higher up the field.

It says a lot for this clubs culture that Dunne has signed on again. Going to be a great player and worthy successor to Lutkins, I believe.
I thought she was one of our best in the Grand Final actually.

I notice that gc womens academy seems to be pumping out quite a few top prospective players like Havana and another girl this year and supposedly another 3 next year, while our academy only produces late round players at best . Any reason for this?

I don't follow women's football but from cursory glance and limited knowledge I ask the question: Isn't our two time premiership team and recent grand final team loaded with Academy graduates?
Who cares what pick if they are producing results.
I note The GC Suns have not played finals.

Belle Dawes (premiership player).
Charlie Mullins (premiership player).
Jade Ellenger (premiership player).
Lily Postlethwaite (premiership player).
Nat Grider (premiership player).
Sophie Conway (premiership player).
Tahlie Hickie (premiership player).
Jesse Wardlaw (competition leading goalkicker, premiership player).
Evie Long (Round 1).
Sophie Peters (Round 1).
Indianna Williams (Round 2).
Rania Crozier (Round 2).
Jacinta Baldwick (Round 2).

I think we've done ok.

Yep, it just comes in waves, you just don't tend to have a consistent pipeline year in year out. It seems like the Swans men's academy was just churning them out, but it's gone a little quieter in recent years. Undoubtedly their time will come again.

That all said, I think there's arguably more of a culture of footy on the Gold Coast due to the Vic migrants from the 80s onwards. But i think our city-based catchment area (i.e. the "Brisbane" component of it) has a bigger population than Gold Coast's which is why they alos have the northern half f the state.

I'm actually a little curious to (a) how the Suns will draft all of their highly-rated players next year and (b) how they fit in 3 highly rated talls in Harris, Baron and the youngest Davies sister. On the second point, I'm sure they'll find a way. On the first, surely we're eyeing off a few. I think our next big draft crop is likely in 2026.

So this year and maybe next year? That's not much of a trend especially as this bidding system is extremely new

Next two drafts.

The Suns made the finals last year.
