The Suncoast are no more, it's back to the Lions Reserves.

We have an official hit out for the reserves againt the AFLQ new boys on the block, the Western Magpies this Saturday at the GABBA as a curtain raiser for the main game.

2009 AFLQ STATE LEAGUE PRACTICE MATCH
Lions Reserves v Western Magpies
Saturday 28 March 2009
The Gabba @ 2:20pm (local time) - curtain raiser

I know I will be able to attend most matches this season (apart from the round 1 game the next week:eek:), so expect plenty of reserves updates here.

I noticed Tom Rockliff is off the injury list, so I hope we get to see him, King and Reddan running around this week.

The AFLQ has undergone massive changes during the off season, with the Northern Territory, Aspley and Western Magpies entering the competition at the expense of old Windsor Zillmere. Should be a pretty good season, and look forward to seeing the rookies out and about:thumbsu:

I only saw the second half, and scores were close when we arrived, but blew out quickly.

Banfield was good, and Sheldon did some nice things as well which was promising.

Was actually dissapointed with Notting's game, he seemed lazy to me, missed a couple of easy goals and turned the ball over wilst under no pressure. He really looked like a bloke peeved that he was there:( Although he did take a spectactular mark (from which he played on and kicked the ball on the full from 10 metres out:eek:)

Clouston also seemed to play well.

I will certainly take more notice next time. Was enjoying being back at the Gabba too much:D

Hopefully not my last Melb/Brissy/Melb weekend for the year… How good is it to hear the LI – ONS… LI – ONS… chant echo around the Gabba again!
It ended up being a long day and any notes taken of the early match seemed to be misplaced?
I was fortunate to see a fair bit of the ressies game and was most impressed with symmetry of both the seconds and the firsts having a 9 goal third quarter. What a pity we couldn't win by a similar amount 80? odd points.

Guys i want to know how Jack Redden ,Todd banfield ,Albert Proud ,Sam Sheldon ,James Polkinghorne and kieran King all played?
From what I recall all the above had a good run lionshine. There were high rotations and with the size of the win it was a well balanced team effort.

There will be many players that could come into consideration for elevation into the ones during the year. Hanley, Banfield and King are just a couple more ‘new’ names to add to the list of young players to have shown promising signs this preseason.
The sparse crowd during the 2nds game made it noticeable to hear the ‘talking’ between players. Add another string to King’s bow, he seems to be very vocal on the field, in a very positive team way. Thought I’d share a couple of snaps for those unable to make it to the early game. [Apologies for the amateurism][FONT=&quot]

Might be a bit of a diversion, but is this the last year of a stand alone Lions 'B' Grade? There is talk of GC17 players spread amongst the GC QAFL clubs, and Lions amongst the Brisbane clubs.

IMO there are major benefits with this approach, the most important being player development. Ruckmen are the biggest winners, as they need time as number one to learn and grow into the role, as well as gaining the physical work this position needs. How can we do justice to Tippett, Murray and Mc Cullogh in the one team - especially when Charman and Luey will undoubtedly drop back on occasion?

The rest of our youngsters will benefit from needing to play a major role in ah adult team also. It has not hurt Beams or Bail. SA and WA younsters do not lose out from this approach. Whilst the local leagues down there are stronger than here, the Qafl is ever improving. This approach will contribute to this trend,IMO, especially with a second AFL team in the QC17.

On another note AFL, and the QAFL, need a presence on the Sunny Coast - so much so that I feel there is an urgent need for direct AFL assistance.

BuntonRules, this is something that I brought up about 12 months ago.

I know that the QAFL (seems strange reverting back to that name, I wonder why they did that?) will not accept a Gold Coast team into the competition.

My understanding of their position is that any changes would take place in 2011, when GCFC come into effect. The main issue they now have is that they finally have their 10 team competition, and desperatley do not want to go back to a bye situation, as then it is nearly impossible to convince GCFC & the Lions to a set up like suggested, as their reserves may not get a game.

The ideal model for the QAFL would be a NT team, a Sunshine Coast team, 4 Brisbane teams (Lions reserves put here) and 4 on the Gold Coast (GCFC reserves), but reality ($$$) would not suggest that a Sunshine Coast team will happen in the near future, so that team may let them have the 5 in Brisbane.

How they make up the numbers seemed to be falling into place. I felt that Palm Beach were being groomed for promotion by 2011, however let's just say the wind has well and truely been taken out of those sails:eek: Off field problems there will almost certainly end that.

The wild card in Gold Coast footy is now Burleigh. Anyone who gets down this way should have a look at what they have done at Christine Ave. New rooms, a social club and a ground makeover has given them a first class venue now. Money seems to be flowing quite well down Burliegh way, which kind of happenes when control of the club is now in the hands of the second biggest social club on the Gold Coast (http://www.burleighbears.com/index.php?page_id=98) Yep, Rugby League controls, Burleigh AFL club, and they have made it uite clear that they want to be in the top competition.

So maybe come 2011, the QAFL comp may look like this: Northern Territory, Aspley, Morningside, Wests Magpies, Redlands, Mt Gravatt, Labrador, Southport, Broadbeach and Burleigh.

$$$$ will have alot to say about it. Redlands have the social facility, however, I am not sure how many $$$ they like to throw at footy. Broadbeach may well need a miracle or two to provide them with ongoing funds (Nathan Ablett may be the first:eek:)
