You could have taken Reiwoldt as a bottom ager at any pick

I guess the rest of the comp still has egg on their face for not taking Jonathon Brown under that same rule. Probably a break even in the end.

You could have taken Reiwoldt as a bottom ager at any pick, Osborne refused a rookie spot & tried out with Box Hill, Sam Gilbert was overlooked until 20, Andrew Raines taken 70 or so 2003,Ben Hudson was playing with Werribee after leaving Mt Gravatt, Tom Williams was taken as a top ager but hadn't played much football (still hasn't) at about 8 in 2004 so you are probably right on that one.

Look fool I am not sure what you are trying say....our drafting around that era was ok (three premierships, four grand finals). A couple of hacks you mentioned wouldn't have made the team.

Saw Reiwoldt kick 3 goals for Broadbeach u16's mostly in the ruck GC junior GF on a seriously waterlogged ground at Burleigh, easily BOG and very special below his knees.Anyone could have followed him the next year and as I understand it drafted him.

Just last week I was trying to recall the circumstances around Riewoldt's drafting.

Was it that Oakley (?) had agreed in principle to extend Brisbane's zone by a set range to oh-so-coincidentally include Broadbeach, at the next AFL meeting. However the other clubs rebelled, possibly led by Collingwood (or is this just residual Pie-hatred leaching into my memories?) so it never happened.

1998 was the year that clubs were granted access to one underage player (where Adelaide famously took Ken McGregor over Matthew Pavlich). Underage does not mean any age though. I'd suggest against making claims you can't back up to support a flimsy premise.

Osborne was an average (and i mean 'average' in draftee terms) player who made it due to a fantastic work ethic, Gilbert got regularly stitched up as a junior, but being a convert and arguably harder worker than Osborne worked his way through to be drafted as a 19yo, Hudson was on nobodys radar, Williams we didn't get a look in and Raines, well sure we could have, but he was only a speculative pick from Richmond that paid off early.

Riewoldt was on everyone's radar from a very early age. I was at the U16 carnival when it was @ the Gabba and the amount of scouts furiously writing down notes was noticable. To think that every club wouldn't have drafted him if they had the chance is laughable - you really should have thought about it a bit more!

Think Brisbane and Sydney used to have a zone selection covering area of 100km radius. In Riewoldt's draft year, that got changed to 50km (thus ruling out Gold Coast area from Brisbane), then the rule got scrapped completely. It's often said that the rule was only changed so Riewoldt could go into the draft, and that he was one that got away.

The only way we could have got him was to trade for the #1 pick in the 2000 draft.

Brown actually chose to sit out the previous years draft so he wouldn't be selected by a club as an underage draft pick - he did that so he could be drafted under the father-son rule by the Lions the following year in 1999.

The aforementioned Peter Yagmoor (or "Yags" to those in the know) will actually have the privilege of gracing the MCG tomorrow in the early, early game. He'll be a key member of the Qld. young scorpions side taking on NSW/ACT in the 2nd division final of the u/16 national championships. Go him! :thumbsu:

Yeah i was rooming with him down in Melbourne, got back today. He played really well, one of the best on.

Conditions were wet, tactics = kick long and direct. Suited Pete beautifully.

Isn’t if funny how he is so quiet about the new sponsorship arrangements that now allow the rich clubs to pay their players way over the cap?

Hypocrisy? From Eddie? I'm shocked, SHOCKED I say!
