Did Karnezis play / how did he go?

I gather from this thread that Maguire didn't play, while Banfield and O'Brien only played the first half (with Banfield pulling out to be an emergency for the seniors). Was there anyone else on the senior list that didn't play and is not on the injury list?

Any injuries in the game? O'Brien???

Yeah Karnezis played, had some good moments but was pretty quiet by his standards. Seemed to be heavily tagged from what I saw, had absolutely no time whenever he got the footy.

Can't think of any other senior listed players who didn't play.

Not in relation to anything you asked but Cal has some really exciting passages of play. I still hold very high hopes for him.

Reserves Overcome Sharks
May 25, 2013
Joshua Bristow

The Brisbane Lions reserves have overcome their toughest challenge all season, defeating the Southport Sharks 14.4.88 to 9.22.76 in a top of the table clash.

Harding was particularly pleased with the Lions midfield, largely attributing the turnaround in the Lions game to them. “Our midfield won it for us, they started getting their hands on the ball, and they got it forward. That allowed us to dictate the game finally. “Harwood, Crisp and Longer were outstanding and also Paparone on the wing who snagged three goals.” he said.

The undefeated Lions Reserves return home to Coorparoo next weekend to play the Gold Coast Suns.

Every time the commentators mentioned Screech from Southport today, all I could think of was...

Only got to watch the last quarter and Harwood played really well. Him and Crisp were the difference in the midfield in the 4th. Was Karnesis getting tagged? I think I saw him get one touch (a great pass to Cornelius on the lead), but otherwise only saw him at the centre bounces.

Have seen litle ressies footy this year, so excuse my ignorance BUT has harwood been playing mainly as a mid this year in the ressies.

Very uninspiring game played in windy conditions. Most of our lot didn't get interested until almost too late.

Harwood probably our most consistent although he seemed to get worn by the lack of real support down back [the make up players were well short of the mark]. Dunno what Harwood has done but it must be serious.

Others to impress were Crisp, a very good runner and Longer. Not much else.

For those pushing Banfield- forget it. Seems to have lost form completely. Bartlett well short of the mark. Hayes poor.

Karnezis did not cop a close tag- it was quite soft but even so he just couldn't handle it. He should be aware that at senior level it is much, much tougher than being scragged by some part-timer. Look at last night- Hanley often had Arnfield's forehead in his face inviting retaliation but still managed to be one of our best.

Let's face it, and the point has been made before, these "contests" really should be a non-event. Full-time pros against part-timers whose physique often betrays the imbalance.

Every time I see a picture of this guy I think of Chris Schmidt

Struggling to piece together a response to this!

I was busy at the time, so only watched a few minutes here and there of the game, but i did notice Karny did have someone following him. Didn't see enough to comment on how much of a hard tag it was, but i did notice Cal would often go over and try block around stopages to try get Karny free.

Ok so you are saying Harwoods form should have him playing seniors, it is some off the field indisecretion that is the reason for his senior non selection???
He did play one senior match this year V the roos,

Banfield, didnt he finish up early from the ressies to be emergency to the seniors at the gabba.

Thats how i read it and i think It's an irresponsible thing to suggest. Why does it have to be something sinister? Why can't it be something as simple as the coaches are happy with his form but don't feel he has the necessary fitness to handle senior football. Of course it's not as interesting as some made up off field indiscretion, but in this case it happens to be the truth.

Starting to wonder whether there will be anyone left to play in the reserves game against the suns this week. Will basically be a team of topups the way the week is going, especially if O'Brien doesn't come up. Injuries always the equaliser.

Reserves wrap is up

couldn't believe this bit

The victory was even more impressive given the Lions were severely undermanned after half-time.

“We only had two players left on the bench – Todd Banfield was being held over for the senior game and Jesse O’Brien hurt himself in the second quarter and sat out for the rest of the game,” Harding said.

“We only made two rotations for the whole quarter – it was very ‘old school’. The boys dug deep and really came home with what I felt was a 7-8 goal breeze.”

only 2 changes in a whole quarter of football, that's just insane. Stellar job by the boys to get up, was fantastic to watch.

Sounds like Todd was ok just held back as insurance for the main game. Just on the teams for this week, I'm guessing that the sub from the lions game on friday isn't allowed to play in the reserves on the say as well?

I think the problem with Harwood is that he doesn't seem to have the fitness to play in the midfield in the seniors. He seemed to do a bit better when playing in the backline at times last year - they tried that against North but it happened to be on a day where we were absolutely killed all over the park. There also seems to be better options at half back / back pocket in terms of rebounding / effective disposals.

He needs to get a chance in the midfield again at some stage this year - hopefully with the aim of doing everything he can to win the clearance rather than playing a negating role. It is not as if we are flying in the centre right at the moment.

I still think the bloke who has his spot in the senior side has the little (c) next to his name. Last week Voss even did with Jed what I'd love to see us try with Harwood which is to send him to the centre bounce before swapping into defence when the play unfolded.

With Rocky now also out it'll be interesting to see who replaces him. Must be between Crisp, Karnezis and Harwood. They would all be big losses to the ressies

Probably, but not as big a loss as Leuenberger, Merrett, Golby, Rich, Rockliff, Maguire, Polec, Beams and Brown.
