Do your research again and do the flags please? And moreland a done deal, big step up from the GDFL, i doubt he would get the freedom he likes in the GFL........... but prove me wrong WHISKERS. I thought Moreland was a done deal at Nth Shore?????????????? What happened there? Anyone out there involed with clubs. Can you tell us the young guns that are training with any VFL clubs at the moment ive heard a few but would like to no more!

The VFL started with a list of 50 players from all over the state. They are training Wednesday's at the moment. A select group also trains on Monday's. The list was cut by 15 last Wednesday, mostly local players from what I can gather.

Hey guys. Just looking at playing GFL this year I live close to St. Marys and was thinking of trying to have a run with them. Was wondering if anyone here knows who I can talk to to find out about training? I've been down a few times but no ones ever there. Cheers

this thread is so sh*t i know its off season but every other league has more info than this. Surely blokes have more to tell than there letting on........

Gee, Tim Finnigan is a very negative person. Gets on Big Cricket GCA forum and bags the Addy for their cricket write ups, now he is on here telling people what they should do. What do you have to offer the forum mate?

Big changes to local footy clearence rules. There is almost always controversy every pre season with a club not letting a player go to another club. Well those days are almost certainly over.

Now a club can only not clear a player if.

"The situation with clearances for the coming year is that they are automatic, unless; the player has a valid current contract with a club; that the player owes money to the club that he is leaving; and, if a player has club property in his possession,"

This is straight from football geelong.

From now on i guess if a player wants to go to another club they can go. I think that is about right.

To suggest that clubs refuse clearances and go to appeal out of bloody-mindedness indicates Ian McTaggart and Football Geelong are either out of touch or naive. Clubs don't have the resources, human or financial, to be involved in frivolous clearance processes. When GFL clubs are losing players straight out of U18s to clubs in lower leagues who are offering $100 a game, the only option was to refuse the clearances and hope common sense prevailed. Unfortunately common sense rarely did prevail in recent times but scrapping the system isn't going to help.

Here are some proposed Football Geelong rule changes/amendments for 2009 - nothing too controversial but might give Mr Finnigan something to talk about.

4.9 Clubs must provide suitable weather proof coaches boxes of design approved by local council building regulations and Football Geelong. Elevated coaches boxes must be approved by Football Geelong. Coaches are NOT permitted to use coaches boxes in a manner that does not comply with local council building regulations or Occupational Health & Safety requirements.

11(e) Water carriers are not permitted to operate from the Coaches box area but must be distributed around the boundary area against the fence while not delivering water.

17.2 On the day of any official senior, reserve, or Under 18 match arranged by the Football & Netball Geelong, all players and officials must make a full inspection of the ground on which the match will be played prior to the match commencing.

12 Timekeepers
(1) One responsible Timekeeper is to be provided by each competing Club. No person shall be permitted to act as a timekeeper unless they have attained the age of 18 years. Each Clubs must provide a suitable clock that are to be synchronized with the other Clubs timekeeper at the commencement of each match. Where only one clock is available that shall be the official time.

There is also a proposal to fine clubs $50 if they don't supply boundary umpires for reserve and U18 games when GFUL umpires are not provided.

Another proposal would give trainers the ability to carry water bottles.

But at the end of the day if someone wants to go and play for another club no matter if they are an 18 year old or senior player they should be able to.

If a kid straight out of U 18's can get $100 a game good luck to them. They have no contract with the club so should be free to move as should all players.

Absolutely clubs havent let players go due to bloody mindedness player exoduses from clubs of players has happened a lot and those clubs had to try and keep players some how. Maybe now clubs might look after players better so they cant leave so easily or want to leave. Maybe now contract will play a bigger part in local football as that can tie a player to a club for a definite period of time.

Just trying to think of grounds where the coaches box is not water proof, not any i can think if but there are a few pretty crap ones that you might get wet in. Springing to mind are Anglesea, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Queenscliff, Portarlington.

Fair enough water carriers should not operate from the coaches box. But they may need to go there to re stock their bottles.

Surely it's not bloody-mindedness for a club to try and keep players who want to chase dollars before they've played a senior game. Many of these players have been nurtured for ten years and provided with facilities and coaching. Is it bloody-mindedness for a club to ask for a season or two of senior football before they shoot through? Clubs in general probably have tended to take the U18 and juniors for granted over the years and this might be a wake-up call but there is only so much clubs can do.

I agree that clubs who have developed a players through juniors deserve to get at least one or two seasons of seniors footy out of them. But at the end of the day if a kid or anyone wants to play somewhere else they can and should be able to.

I also agree that maybe now clubs might not take talented juniors for granted now and maybe look after them a little better than maybe some fly by night star recruit. Could it also see 18 year old signing long term contracts to clubs to ensure they are not poached.

Going to be interesting to see how this pans out.

Is there any minimum age rule relating to signing somebody on a contract? For example, signing up a player under the age of 18 makes the contract null & void?

I think bringing in a rule along the line of what Archie was suggesting, such as minimum 2 years senior service if played a certain number of years in that clubs juniors, would be a good compromise. After that 2 year period, the player would then be free to move as per the new rule. Obviously there would be extenuating circumstances at times such as moving to another area, employment, etc.

As Archie said, there are a lot of time and resources put into these kids as juniors and it seems unfair for them to fly the coup straight away.

It has been the policy of some clubs to knock back all first clearences. This has been a waste of time as these players get cleared eventually and hopefully these new rules will get rid of the stupid 3 day rule and appeals. I agree something has to be done about U/18 coiming up but as yet I have not seen anything that I think will work.

I would suggest that all coaches boxes are too small and were built when we had 1 coach & 2 on the bench. St Marys opposition roof leaks and you cannot stand up in the Barwon Heads box without hitting you head and it was built less than 3 years ago. Don't get me started on opposition change rooms.

Can anybody tell me why trainers can't carry water? They do at AFL level and it would be less people we would have to find.

Don't get me started on opposition change rooms.

This has been a bug bear of mine for a long time. From my experience in the BFL here are the BFL opposition change rooms best, worse and shocking.

Best

Drysdale
Modewarre
Geelong Amateurs
Portarlington

Not Great But OK

Queenscliff
Newcomb

Shocking

Ocean Grove
Anglesea
Barwon Heads (what a waste of money that development was no bigger than a shoebox)
Torquay

The 2 worst are by far Ocean Grove and Anglesea, they are disgraceful and as for the showers, well disgusting is an appropriate word.

For what its worth the best showers are Drysdale and Portarlington.

Easy to criticize but what are you bringing to the table. Why dont you contribute some league info, instead of complaining do something about it.

i can only comment on grovedale really as thats my local club and i did say a few pages ago that alot of blokes have left the club, they've apprently got a bloke named chris whitman on board but not as a player. He played for hawthorn in the 89 grand final but i dont know to much about him sorry. I do know bell park are looking pretty strong and hopefully i can give some news on them shortly, as everyone knows they've picked up a few of grovedales better players plus a few others so should be pretty strong. As for my other team the mighty moddewarre warriors, when i hear wats happening out there ill post it.

thinking about the interchange benches in the gfl, there are a few that need upgrading

Leopold - no good, especislly with that plank that every1 hits there head on

West Saints - no good, and there visitor's changerooms are a disgrace

Newtown - no good, not even a proper bench in there

St joeys - ok but requires work

St marys - same

The rest i'd say are good but even some of them could do with some work

good point there about clubs taking juniors for granted. I played all my junior footy at grovie from u15's thru to u18's and played finals every year. Grovedale u18's played in 3 consecutive grand finals from 2001 to 2003 and there'd be 10 blokes left playing there now if that.

Certain clubs have been more interested in recruiting blokes with over hyped reputations than trying to develop there talented juniors and getting them ready for senior footy.

I know a few guys who played in a gfl reserves side when they were 19 years old and sat on the pine most games whilst blokes who were 35-40 were playing every minute evry week. They then went off to the bfl and gdfl and became senior players with one of them now a gdfl premiership player.

Ocean groves facillitys would easily be the worst in the region. For a club thats been succesful on the field for so long its disappointing to see there rooms being neglected. Does anyone know why they've stayed at there current ground when shell road is just screaming out to be turned into a brilliant football ground?

Can you give a few examples? Interesting topic... Actually, any player that was a fringe player in GFL but has dominated or a solid player in GDFL.

I played junior footy with him at grovie he's since gone on to win a flag with belmont. This will expand he's already gigantic head but he was also very stiff not to win the best on ground medal in the grand final.

Brad edwards is one who was one of the better gdfl players that never set the set the gfl on fire. Altough that probably had more to do with dedication than anything else.
