Hard to look past Sth Barwon for premiership, although Bell Park will be dark horse. Mensch is to kick hungry to stay as permanent full forward, can't target little blokes from the goal square.
St Mary's are aging, GWSP's would want to make finals but with money comes expectations, look to minor leagues to prosper when all the kids who can't get a decent run start walking out. Lara will improve ladder postition more on what others have lost rather than what they have gained. Newtown, unknown but could be good if fit. Colac will be up the top, have lost a few, but gained quality. St Joeys face a tough year but if the kids come through will be unpredictable each week

The talented kids have been getting a run for years. You just don't hand senior GFL games out to players just because they are kids. The club has always stuck by their kids that are coming through to play senior football. I'm sure you couldn't pick out one that's been hard done by and has gone on to make a name for himself elsewhere. I would expect there to be 4 or 5 youngsters in GWSP best 21.

Agree Sth Barwon are hard to look past as favourites but a few other sides (Bell Park, West Saints, St Marys, poss Colac) are capable of winning the premiership if things fall there way. I dont think you could classify Bell Park as dark horses though. Yeah theyve lost Grgic but they were runners up last year and have picked up a heap of classy recruits to make their list even better. No doubt top 3 unless a horror run of injuries.

Just need to look at GWSP team from last couple weeks of 2007. Were still battling for finals so weren't just handing out spots. Stott, Marcantonio, Young, Sells, Burke, Ritchi were all under 20 years old and from GWSP own junior system and were playing seniors. You wouldnt find to many other clubs with that many of there own(not poached) youug juniors playing seniors

And how did GWSP go in the last few rounds when they had to win to make finals, and some of the high profile recruits were injured?
Were they not leading the comp leading into the home stretch?

Is Talbot playing this year or did he stay true to his word and retire?

Bell Park, St. Mary's and South Barwon will fight out hte top three.

South have maintained their side and have replaced their departures with capable replacements, while both Bell Park and St. Mary's have recruited well.

People are forgetting that Bell Park have picked up three players who were on Geelong's rookie list in 05-06 and then played in Werribee's ones throughout last year. Jarrad Garth will smash opposition sides this year with his versatility and power. (The blokes mammoth!) Bachelor is a class act that was approached by some AFL clubs while Sherringham is no slouch and would make a perfect back flanker. Add Aaron Broom from Banno and Brad Manzack, who is returning, and you have a lethal midfield.

By all reports on here, Mary's have done alright with their recruiting and get back Chris Jones, who will add more drive and defensive skill to the backline. Most dangerous spine in the comp!

Bad losses to Leopold and Newtown cost them but played all over the top of St Joeys to just miss out by a percent or so to the eventual runners-up in Bell Park. Not sure what you are trying to say here but if everyone is happy to write off the Roosters already than so be it. Mildly amusing also that the community thinks that GWSP are buying themselves into finals. You would have thought that after having not much cash for so many years and paying well under the odds that turning around the club off the field and finally garnering good sponsorship dollars opens the door then to some higher profiled players. St Marys has been spending this sort of cash for the past 5 or so years yet it is just an accepted part of the GFL landscape. GFL has long been a league of the haves and have nots and all of a sudden one of the traditional strugglers throws their hat in the ring and has a red hot go and everyone gets their back up. Bring on the season I say. If they miss on the finals then so be it but look out if they get there.

For the record; who have Bell Park lost?

And what is that Most Dangerous spine again? From full back....

By normal standards, Bell Park has lost a fair bit of talent and experience. But in comparison to who the Dragons have picked up, it doesn't seem too bad at all.

Brent Grgig (Bell Post Hill)
Marty Barbaro (retired)
Nick Hill (Queensland)
Ross Dillon (overseas)
Daniel Lowther (overseas)

Some very good points - brownsugar, you're clearly a biased poster but you have defended your club here brilliantly.
If you work hard and get the money then why not spend it?? All the other top clubs are.

Good one:thumbsu:

thats true every local club would use money to attract big name players if it was possible. its also a success thing. a club may have money but if they have not had much success it makes it harder to recruit those big name players. south barwon keep getting stronger coz of their success just like north shore did with their 6 consecutive premierships. its a known fact that all clubs will throw whatever they can to attract players to their club but its also the personnel at the club and career opportunties that players look at. its a shame really but thats the way footy works these days.

I follow the Central Highlands Football League and have noticed Creswick have recruited several players from the Geelong area. Are there any standout players amongst them? Any info would be much appreciated

I was driving through Belmont last night and noticed a game of footy on under the james harrison bridge so I thought I'd call in and have a watch.

I ended up being Blue West vs Portarlington. Very scrappy game however Blue West came up with the win.

Well done to Blue West, hope its a sign of more wins this year. Port would be disappointed as they only had one or two players missing.

apperently they have picked up alot of players but heard they werent the best. Its good to see a lower grade team beating a higher grade team, i would think blue west will be going into 2008 with alot of confidence after the win.

Who are the 10-15??? Are they the ones that left???
Heard newtown are close to signing a strong ruckmen from the pt melb region?

Just reading previous posts, and i stumbled across this 1 and started laughing! Your one of the 1's that left bono (LM)! Went to Drysdale. On the GDFL thread you get a really good rap, you should go have a look! Your out now! Oh and you do have freckles!

Any results on practice matches played over this weekend?

Colac destroyed Terang Mortlake from the Hampden league by somethink like 10 -15 goals...without travis woodmason, matt gibson, jake carmody, jake mcguane, alex adams and jason mcnamara...sydney recruit joffy simpkin played, along with adam harris the bloke who has won something like 4 cdfl bnfs.

Modewarre beat Thomson by 4-5goals. From what i been told Thomson were missing up to 12 senior players though. Not sure how many modda had out.

anglesea seniors won against some warrnambool side today who won the grand final last year by 60pts:thumbsu: and things look good for anglesea this year well better then last year:p
