While Geelong West St Peters may be an improved side i cant see how a team that failed to make the finals last year will be the benchmark the next year.

South Barwon are the benchmark no doubt. They will still take some topping next year.

Wait till West win or actually make the finals before we mention the word benchmark and them in the same sentence.

G West will do well just to maintain where they finished often teams make rapid improvement then struggle to hold there ground or go higher. Leopold last year perfect example.

On this topic whats everyones predictions for top five likely improvers and sliders and so on, ill start

Top Five

Bell Park - will go to the next level next year
Sth Barwon
Colac
Grovedale
St Marys

Big improvers Grovey Big sliders Newtown

Undoubtedly Sth Barwon are the benchmark for 08.
As for West, they will be a big threat. Some players from Sth Barwon and other top teams let it be known that 1 team they feared was West due to their forwardline and the likes of Faulkner and P.Carson in the middle. Their weakness was in the ruck and that appears to be solved with Wilde and Chambers, and it also frees Flanders to settle at CHB.
Although they have a couple other quality recruits as well, the improvement really needs to come from the likes of Stott, Sells, Marcantonio and Young. These guys have promised so much and after playing 30 senior games its time they started to regularly deliver. If they do, then West will be a show

with the players bell park have picked up its hard to see them not being the main threat to south barwon. would like to see them knock them off! must have had the wallet out over this preseason to buy the names of sherringham back to the club and batchelor also. I still can't see them beating south barwon...especially if thompson doesnt get drafted, its hard to see him sticking in the VFL after the year his had and to not get drafted. West will be competitve, hard to see them winning it though, they just dont have the discipline of a south barwon, nor do they have the advantage of playing together for 3 or 4 years like the likes of south barwon...would hate to imagine the finances that they are forking out to get all these players...

My Tips for season 08...

South Barwon
Bell Park
St Marys
Colac
St Josephs
Geelong West
Grovedale
Lara
Newtown
North Shore
St Albans

sheringham is not back at bell park yet, things still have to be worked out in his case but with batchelor signed you'd have to think he will be there if not playing on geelongs vfl top up list...

Former Captain of Geelong West Tony Costa is moving from the roosters to Drysdale... Massive get for drysdale, as costa has got plenty of skill, experience and leadership.

Can't see these two sides being that high nextyear. Colac have lost way too much experience and even though they are a strong and fit side, I reckon the lack of experience will undo them. Joeys will be competitive with the Hovey as coach but they haven't really recruited many players, besides Butch Shaw who is 33, and have lost Hood, Greaves and Madden through retirement and Foss to QLD.

With everybody apparently leaving Newcomb, will I even have a team to play for in 2008? Anybody who has spoken to football club people let me know please - I would also like to know who Thommy has spoken to

I know otoole stewart manning ferguson bruhn are off to corio and there talking to hinch and scott evans aswell, so that cant help newcombes chances with there numbers and corio is very close to signing nicholls milliagan nolan and a couple more from north shore.
corey chapman to drysdale
Bowyer from bph of to st joeys
matt lewis staying at bannoc
theres a lot of names leaving gfl and bfl to go over to gdfl thats certainly got to strengthen gdfl

My Tips for season 08...

South Barwon: Still the bench mark; always replace what they lose.
Bell Park: Great signs at the end of the year. Good team unit.
GWSP: Another year down the track with the same group and some cream
on top with the ruck division.
St Marys: Always thereabouts.
Colac: Still a good side but have lost some key players.
Grovedale: Great signs last year and well coached.
Newtown: Well come back to the pack a bit.
Leopold: Brown's departure will have massive impact. Midfield?
St Josephs: Lost more than they have gained.
Lara: Still developing.
North Shore: Long road ahead.
St Albans: Bellarine beckons. Another bad year and FG hands might be tied.

Fergusson moving to another team after just 12 months at one club. Surely not!!

Looks like the hawks could be the team to beat. My tigers will be better again this year under Mitch but have not heard much from the other bfl clubs. heads and modda have picked up new coaches and players and are tipped to go close. any other moves?

Brad Manzack is looking for a return to the Dragons for 08. Can you confirm this "tommahawk"?

yeh mate he was overseas last year, would have loved to have been a part of the late run in the finals and has already been doing some pretty intense training. zane vale is training at geelong vfl which will improve his game dramatically so you'd have to think they will make a pretty useful ruck combination...

Drysdale are the biggest chokers in local football at the minute. They are great performers in the home and away but when it comes to finals they go missing.

In saying that with Fopiani at the helm you wouldnt want a better bloke i think.

But i think the dale will tease again.

Another good signing by the dragons they seem to be really setting themselves for a huge 2008 with the recruiting. Does anyone know of any departures or are they keeping everyone and adding some quality.

every player that played in the grand final will be back on board apart from ross dillon who has headed overseas for a year. pre season training starts monday will be interesting to see if there are any recruits who have not been named on here yet. in all honesty the list has never been far off, it was getting it together on the field that was the problem but that seems to have been solved as well...

Matt Murphy leaving the couta bowl joining old coach otis clark at st albans. Will be a huge loss for the coutas as its always a struggle enticing new players down there and you would say he has been there best/most consistent player for a while now.

Good on ya murph! class player and will be missed for sure. by the way was talking to a few simpson boys a couple of weekends ago who are signing up with the warriors and are confident of premiership glory. Who have they picked up/lost from last season? Go Tigers!!!!! in 08

Fergy's doing well and next year will be 5 clubs in 5 years but Manning is keeping pace with him and will also be 5 in 5.

Don't forget his 4 cricket clubs in 4 years as well!!

Just heard Nicholls has signed at Corio, so it is definite. As for Brett Nolan he is full of S***, he is like an old blow fly hanging out of O'Toole & Nicholl's backsides. I heard he tried to make a comeback with Nth Shore reserves and all he did was make a fool out of himself, too FAT, SLOW, and proppy with his dicky knees, which all he did was king hit players behind play and sent off which crucified the side. So good luck CORIO if that's the recruits you are chasing. (NO GOOD)

Hasn't Dan Lowther retired to work OS in 2008?
