Yes, please update us with some GFL news please! This thread has turned into a Bellarine/GDFL and football classifieds column over the past month.

Maybe it's time for there to be threads for each league rather then the three leagues in one.

No, I think all in one is good because of the frequency of players moving between the leagues and the natural interest that everyone from the region has in the different leagues. Just seems however, that we are starved of GFL news at present; or is every club just playing their cards close to their chest?

Damien Mahoney has been apointed as coach of Newcomb. He is the ex Forrest premiership coach so he must know a bit about it.

He says the club is re-building after losing quite a few players that we all know of.

Its hard to build a club when you don't have U/18's.

I hear that there aren't as many players from last season leaving the club as what has previously been reported. What is the word on them?

Is Mahon's playing? Good little footballer in his day, maybe be a bit long in the tooth now.

Which clubs have recruited the best over the pre-season thus far?? From what i can gather Bell Park have in the GFL and not too sure about clubs in the BFL...

GWSP have done pretty well landing Paul Chambers & Rick Wilde; probably as a permanent forward pocket. Two gun young midfielders from Warrnambool are also apparently on their way. Seems as though most clubs have lost more than they have picked up; could well be a similar ladder to last season if this is the case but I see more consistency from Bell Park and GWSP and a possible slide from St Josephs & Newtown.

Robbie Law was unsure of his Newcombe playing future. Much depended on the arrival of the new coach. Could this be another on the way out?

You seem to know a lot about individuals and their thought processes leading in and out of seasons. Do you just stir people with your opinions or are you really a Geelong messiah??

Whats your background? At least.. do you still play?

Does anyone know if there is any truth in the rumour that North Shore only had a handfull of players to their first preseason run and they did a beep test which was won by a 33 year old reserves player? What's going on down there? Something's not right. Why the mass exodus?

I thought that forums are all about opinions? As for stirring people, I don't think the fact that Robbie is weighing up his football future with the club, is any surprise, considering the personal that has left and late appointment of a coach.

As for myself, retired. Played once upon a time, but was never any good. I do enjoy watching local football, throughout many country/metro leagues.

I don't know why the mass exodus, but your right, there is something amiss down there. Especially when "Doggy" Ryan was appointed coach, and quit/stood down not long after without a ball being kicked in anger.

I think a lot of it still stems from last season and the appointment of Keast. From what I can gather, I don't think he is well received in some parts. Then the clean out this season; Keast goes, other regulars or traditional North Shore people go and there are no replacements. Expect the Seagulls to be right down in the cellar for an extended stay this time. Gone are the days when quality recruits walk through the door. It takes a string of seasons of hard work and continued recruitment to build good teams and clubs. North Shore has been jogging up and down on the spot for a long time and have relied too heavily on ex-players returning. Not sure if there will be many tears shed arouund the region if they finish where predicted. If they can get up from here good luck to them.

Yes I agree, from a person looking in at the club I couldn`t understand why the club appointed Keast in the first place it seemed a backward step - a good coach when you have gun players. The appointment of Keast I have heard is that it was not all that well received from many of the people at Nth Shore players and life long supporters included. Go Swannies.

Not having a dig at you.. Was just asking the question. As for forums being about opinions.. yes your right but half is opinion and half is actual "facts", rumours or starting up discussions.

you do bring a bit to the forum with your knowledge of not only geelong footy, but the ballarat fl in particular.

just fishing for a hint~~;)

From what I understant Doggy was never appointed as coach. There was talk that he would do the job with Luke Matthews and another player but it was just that, all talk. Bernie Lynch is the only person to have been appointed coach however Im not sure who else if anyone applied for the job and if Lynch was their first choice for the job.

The info I got was from a current North Shore player. He must be a liar. The real problem has been during the early 90's North Shore had a great junior sides and brought all these players through to the seniors. They payed them minimum match payments compared to other teams and leagues. 80% of their team was junior product, topped up by those in coaching roles (Keast, Watt, Atkins, Fopiani etc). Their junior talent pool dried up (for whatever reason) and they were not prepared to offer players from other teams/leagues market value and they subsequently they went to other GFL teams. They thought the reputation of the club would draw players rather than matching offers from other clubs. They were spoilt with the core of juniors during the 90's that played for not much. Even now, GDFL teams are luring their juniors away early with dollars. Their unwillingness/inability to pay players the going rate over the last few years has seem them slide down the ladder. Then you get the snowball effect where noone wants to sign up at a struggling club despite their rich history. Teams such as South Barwon and Bell Park have had good juniors and are prepared to top up by paying a few big names and as a result are staying strong. In short, to be successful over a long period you need a talented loyal junior base and the money to pay a few quality players. The exception is St Marys who have been up there or years, had ordinary juniors but have been prepared to pay big bucks year after year. Looks like Geelong West are trying to follow suit.

The area's residents are getting older. The new growth area's such as Leopold, perhaps Lara are where the juniors will prosper.
