At the big bash cricket final, batsmen from each team were selected to hit balls into the stands and technology was used to determine who hit the longest ball.

I know we have the sprint on grand final day, but I'm not sure if many are really that interested in it.

If you got a selection of the longest kickers in the comp, and set up an electronic measurer to determine who had the longest kick, I think this would be more of a spectacle and get more people talking.

Each club would nominate their rep, split up into two heats that are held pre game, then the longest 6 kickers out of the heats would go into a final at half time (stuff the musical act) to shoot it out for the prize.

I'd love to see a series of players attempt to kick multiple 60-70m torps, and then crown an official 'longest kick in the game' award at the end of it.

Thoughts?

Great idea, the torp is truly one of the great skills of the game. I also hope Jamison occasionally uses the top during the year and doesn't just save it for the pre-season games.

It is a great skill and spectacle, but one problem I could see in having a comp like this is that I don't know how practiced the modern player is at the torp. You certainly don't see it used much in games these days and for that reason it may end up being a bit cringeworthy seeing alot of shanked kicks. Still would be more fun than the grand final sprint IMO though.

Off topic but does anyone know if the Recruit is having a second series on Foxtel this season?

Ablett can do some juggling

Is there anything he can't do?

now tell me that wouldn't get a full house at the G on GF day!

Long kick comp is a fine idea, but unfortunately it isn't part of the American NFL set up and as such will not be considered by the AFL who slavishly think the American system is the be all and end all.
Doesn't Rocca and a few other ex afl players play NFL kicking massive Torps every game. So this idea is a lock in

More and more punters are now using the drop punt for shorter distance punts to trap returners (which of course may soon include Jarryd Hayne) inside their own 20 yard zone.
