Fagan would be great but what coach would want to leave Brisbane anytime soon they have built a team capable of winning multiple premierships . Would be a hard sell getting him to leave

Still a couple of seasons away, may see it as time for a change and an opportunity to play a part in Tasmanian footy history which is no doubt close to his heart.

Also ya know…

Awesome coach, highly underrated.
Congrats on a great career, hopefully he's not lost to the game.

He won't likely to do a Hardwick have a year off maybe do some media or whatever. Take the best job for himself in a year. I'd be looking at Essendon, maybe Tassie (though not sure he'd do it), Port (whether Carr is rated isn't the point, Horse could get them to a GF), etc

Wow big surprise here.

Great coach and pretty impressive resume.

Looks like the fuel tank was on low and he didn't have the drive to go on.

Would not be surprised to see him at Tassie as the coach.

Depends whether Tassie can get Fagan

jesus, tough gig being an AFL coach.

makes finals basically every year and multiple grand finals.

Yeah hasn't had a good showing in Grand finals but heck me, at least he gets there........

When coming 2nd isn't good enough than......wow
Lots of pressure on incoming coach

I couldn’t care less if he gets us there he’s won 1 out of 5, that’s hardly a great record and 2 we were clear favourites and dished up some of the worst football imaginable. Sure blame the player and that’s part of it but the coach keeps picking injured blokes and expects it to work.

In this industry if you are second you are last just with a worse draft pick
I understand loosing grand finals hurt but I think Sydney supporters have been spoiled a bit , they have been a extremely successful club for a long time as for second is last thats just silly you need to play finals consistently to give your self a chance which Sydney do making and winning grand finals is not easy look at port Adelaide for example

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but it’s rather selfish timing and bad for Sydney.

You’d assume no matter the timing it was probably going to be cox. However Sydney have been robbed an ability to do due diligence on the rest of the field, as they are tied to clubs doing preseason training.

Then the flow on, they have an incredibly senior assistant who is going to step out of that role. Replacing Cox with a well credentialed candidate is also now near impossible (without looking to the likes of Buckley from media), as any highly credited Assistant, is now tied to a club. Whereas being Sydney the week after the GF they would have had the ability to poach someone, that opportunity is now also gone.

He had an illustrious coaching career. Pretty sure he’d receive another senior coaching gig in a heartbeat if he ever wishes to return

For the stat tragics, would this be the first time in history that a coach that has won the minor premiership quits the same year?
In 1979 Alex Jesaulenko was Captain and Coach of the minor premiers and eventual premiers. He quit the club completely and joined St Kilda in 1980 after he was sacked as coach.

I don't think it is gone, but I think Sydney are comfortable with Dean Cox. They know him very well and odds are he has taken on board what he has learned from Horse and also has his own ideas for things he think he can improve.

Had we wanted an external coach and announced that I bet Sydney would get dozens of resumes. It would be a very popular job given the state of the list.

If you are another club, preseason training has started, are you allowing your assistant to go and start a process of trying to be a coach of Sydney? Leaving you without a senior assistant that like Sydney with Cox would be impossible to replace?

You’ve ignored the part that they now need to also replace Cox. Lots of knowledge walked out on the club, while yes, it would never be replaced with 1 recruitment, however due to the timing the ability to replace some of it just got significantly harder, than if it was 2 months ago, when the assistant coach merry go round was in full swing

Would do wonders for the culture we are trying to build if we bring him in with a coaching role in some capacity would love him in the development scene

I'd take him at the Crows in a heartbeat.
