Losing passion for the AFL

another thing

I also miss the U19's and Reserves as it was good to see the young blokes coming through and get to the game early. The Reserve cup on a Sunday afternoon used to be classic viewing just for Don Scotts observations 'I like this fellow'!

I still follow the Power with all my heart, and I will continue to do that, regardless of whether we're top of the ladder, or the very bottom. I used to be able to sit down for an entire Sunday and watch continuous football, irrespective of whether it was my team or not. Now, I cant seem to do that. I dont know why, nor can I seem to rectify the situation.

I've become a lot more interested in local footy, and I follow Norwood, because I know a few of the guys who play in the senior team and the reserves, and they invited me down to watch the Port v Norwood game in Round One. I have to say, they've twisted my arm, and I'm hooked. I love local footy.. I love the fact you can go out and listen to the coach when they give their 1/4 time and 3/4 time addresses. I love the feeling of being so close to a team. The players are great too.. you can mingle with the ones who arent playing and have a chat. I love the fact that you can see the up and coming players, the retired legends, and the fact that local footy is hard and always thrilling makes it more of an experience.

I still enjoy the AFL, but I guarantee, if I still lived in Adelaide, I'd be at every Norwood home game, and a fair few away games as well. The Redlegs would get my priority support at the moment. I don't know why I feel this way, I still feel very strongly for the Crows, I just feel as though something is missing right now. I wish I could put my finger on it......is it the Coopers, whilst standing on the hill, is it the lack of santisation? I don't know. I'm back in Adelaide for the Showdown this weekend, will have to look up when the Norwood game is (usually at Adelaide Oval on Anzac day, but I have a feeling it isn't this year).

Cheers,

Kasey

It seems like the last of the football traditions was lost when Seven lost the rights.

I am less interested this year due to the new TV deal forcing us Northerners to watch games at midnight.

Also the constant whining from Eddie everywhere is putting a big stain on the game. We need football personalities not friggen TV personalities.

Its at Norwood Oval this Friday night, at 7.40pm. We're playing South.. should be a walkover. :)

Bloody hell, that means I am going to have to sober up significantly...My brother and I are doing dawn service and marching in the parade this year, then off to the RSL to hang with some fellow jacks and the old guys. It's bound to be a looong day :D:D

Cheers,

Kasey

Change Norwood with Sturt and Crows with Freo and you would've taken the words out of my mouth. :)

I agree; it is an intangible thing, just a different feeling from AFL games. I would've swapped 11 Freo home games to be at Unley last weekend.

I'm sick of the umpires making their presence felt. The only good umpire is the one you don't notice. There should be ONE field umpire ... not three.

Completely agree alf. Prime example was thursday nights game when johnson and didak were wrestling (iirc) and the umpire gave a free kick. Then knowing full well he was microphoned, decided to stop the play and walk over to johnson and told him to 'cool it', five times. Do we viewers honestly give a f**k what those pricks have to say on live tv? They can get ****ed.

For $750 I sponsor a player, through my buisness, get five season tickets, two dinners, signage, free advertising in every newsletter & on the website, mentions on the PA at every home game, invitations to the SANFL corporate box for AFL games, & get a genuine appreciation for my dollar. What would this cost for an AFL club, $10k if not more I would think ...

You're probably right about the $10K ...

... and conversely ... what WOULD you get in the AFL for $750?

At Collingwood, that would be roughly the price of a Legends membership ... which gives you (and ONLY you) admission and a reserved seat for 18 games in Melbourne ... plus a guarantee of access to finals tickets if Collingwood are playing (which, of course, you still have to pay for) and guaranteed access to a Grand Final ticket if Collingwood are playing (but only if you've coughed up BEFORE some deadline that they decided to impose retrospectively this year)

Oh yes, I nearly forgot ... you get a free hat, a few stickers and a medallion too ... and the right to vote for Eddie at the next AGM.

I'm not sure of the exact prices off-hand ... but I know there wouldn't be a lot of change from your $750.

We've also got this package that lets you mingle with the players and coach after a game ... but that costs EXTRA !

I'm not making this up, by the way ... It's actually true. Can't remember what they call it ... but I was flabbergasted when I heard about it.

The S.A.N.F.L. certainly seems to be great value these days. Up to the late '80s they were just as arrogant and exploitative as the V.F.L., but they've really made themselves much more accessible to the average punter since 1991. I suppose they've had to in order to survive. I'm glad to hear the comp is picking up again, though it's sad that the Magpies aren't doing too well :(

You are a whinger to the Nth degree.

You complain about having to schedule your life around football games?? All games played on a Saturday.. just for you :( awww.

This was my favourite though... complaining about paying too much because of the salaries, then complaining about the tiny sponsorship on the jumper. Which if the sponsorship wasn't there, you would be paying MORE to go to the footy.

I don't know about you, but when my club is out on the park, I couldn't give a rat's arse if they were wearing double pluggers and wifebeaters, as long as they are kicking goals. A little sponsorship logo surely does not enter my thoughts whatsoever.

Go pick your dummy up off the floor.

Legends Membership (18 games with reserved seat and access to finals) - Cost $655

Inner Sanctuam (In the rooms before and after to game - 11 games) - Cost $1200 (not including admission or reserved seat)

I'm loving my footy more than ever, very proud of my club after where its came from - it's the fans Im worried about. But then again their over-aggressiveness is probably a by-product of the way the AFL has treated them/us..

Remember when you didn't worry about how much it cost to go to a game, to buy a membership, to buy food and drink, to buy anything to do with footy, and all this to keep your club alive.

It's all about bloody money!!

I'd just like to note, I'm loving footy more than ever.

Although of course I would like to see a few things changed, I'm not gonna whinge about it all day long. I'm just happy that I get to see our clubs run out every week.

Me too. I'm loving football more this year. Its probably got to do with us being more successful.

I think you go thru different stages as to its importance to you.

I've been going every week since I was 8 and I will go for the rest of my life. But a couple of years ago I wasn't "hanging out" for the football season as much as this year. Probably because we were losing every week. It does make a difference.

As far as the salary cap etc goes. It doesn't take away from my passion for the game. I don't bother getting into the political side of the game. I just enjoy it for what it is.

Some teams may have more money in the salary cap, but at the end of the day there is 22 players out there trying to beat my side, and I will keep supporting my team knowing they can beat anyone.

True.

But everything in life is userpays. Money is what makes the world go round.

I pay $650 per year but there is nobody putting a gun to my head, its my choice and I think its good value.

And if the players weren't paid such ridiculous salaries there'd be no need for the "tiny" sponsorship ... or the king's ransom ticket prices.

"Tiny" sponsorship????????????????

You surely jest.

It's impossible to buy any Club merchandise without becoming a walking advertisement for the Club sponsor.

I REFUSE to buy or wear a Collingwood jumper or any other current official merchandise unless Emirates pay me for being their walking billboard.

The day is coming when clubs will be named after their sponsor. "The Emirates Magpies ... flying high forever".

Obviously you'd have no problem going to the footy and yelling out some sponsor's name as you barrack for your team. Well good for you ... the future of football belongs to people like you.

And you know what .... ?

... You can friggen have it !

Yes, I buy my membership and pay only for what I want. I guess it was just a whinge about how a lot of footy talk IS about money. It is just sad to hear constantly about clubs needing money to survive etc. That is all I meant. It used to be that footy was the main topic. Now it's about a million other things for everyone to 'worry' about.

It's a gorgeous day here in Melb though. I ain't really complaining. :)

You'd think it 'd make a difference, but for me, my lack of interest in the footy coincides with the beginning of the greatest era for the club in my lifetime. It's interesting - lived, breathed and ate footy in the mid 90s, even when we were ****.. now, when we're near the top, I seem to have gone off it a bit.

It's interesting, and I think the over-sanitisation and over-commercialisation of the game has a lot to do with it.
